Here's the situation: I'm a substitute teacher with a B.S. in Business, and will be going back to school in the fall to become a teacher. In the meantime, I'm looking to start tutoring in the area. However, I'm clueless as to how to advertise for tutoring. Is it necessary to advertise? If so, how do I do it? I tried making a flyer to post in schools, but I'm even at a loss as to what to put on the flyer. Suggestions/comments?

I sent you a PM. I would go now before the end of the year to as many schools in your area to introduce yourself to the principal and the counselor for what ever age/subject that you want to do.

I got your e-mail, jamsmom, thanks! Unfortunately, there are no Sylvan Learning Centers in the area, so that's not a possibility. Any other suggestions?

If you are substitute teaching right now, why not talk to the teachers and see if any of them know of parents who might want to put their kids into tutoring? They might be able to give you some good leads. I know that I can think of a few parents off the top of my head who might be interested in a tutor for their kids. Maybe a child who is really struggling, or who has parents who are very pushy.... :)
Good luck! And good luck getting into teaching - I know that in NC right now, we have a big shortage going on, especially with this No Child Left Behind act eliminating lateral entry teachers by 2006, thank you President Bush, hehehe :)
Cheers!

When I approached our school about tutoring, I was told that they could not pass my name along. They were afraid of being accused of endorsing particular tutors.

I would also think it would be some breach of professional conduct if you approached parents based on what you observed in the classroom.

Posting flyers is your best bet and word of mouth too. We have several here my town. One women does upper grade math. I have been tutoring the same child for the last four summers. On the flyer, just mention what you could tutor (math, reading) and what grades. Things have worked out really well with the child I tutor in the summer - the mother goes to the reading specialist at the end of the year and brings me a large packet of work and ideas to use with him so he get two months of practicing his skills that he just learned and is ready to go again in the fall.

I used flyers with nice bright colours. I also made sure the part that had the pull off number on it said tutoring on it. I don't know how many times I have pulled a number off a flyer and stuck it in my pocket, only to find it later and say to myself what was this for again:rolleyes: Also, I included the subjects and grades I was willing to tuotor. This saves parents/students calling for something you can't tutor in (in my case it is French)

High traffic areas are a good place to try out some flyers.

Good luck!

We have a small community newpaper that comes out once a month and I see ads for tutors in their. Also an ad at the library might be a good idea also. Good luck, I'm sure that you'll find kids, there is always a need for tutors.

I've seen classified ads for tutors. Take a look in your newspaper to see how these services are offered.

Our newspaper has a monthly parenting magazine with lots of ads from tutors. I used to work for a tutoring company that advertised that way.
