Just wondering which one would be the best? Staying at AKL with DD 8 and DS 4. We are also doing chef mickey's so mostly the same characters as Tusker House. Are they mostly the same food?

We have eaten at both, and found the food and service at Boma a lot better than Tusker House. More variety, fresher and much less chaotic. If you are already doing a character meal than my vote would be for Boma, especially since you will be at AKL anyway.

We did both last trip. We loved Boma and would love to return, if it wasn't so far out of the way for us. Tusker House was my least favorite restaurant on site, both in terms of food (variety and quality) and character interaction. And we liked Chef Mickey 's so obviously our standards are not too high! 8-)

We did both last trip as well with 1-yo and 3-yo grand daughters. They loved Tusker House. I thought the character interaction was great. And 3-yo loved the parade around the restaurant. We didn't also do Chef Mickey's though. My daughter and I both love Boma. So, if I were you, I would choose Boma only since you are going to CM's. This next trip, I've got an ADR for Boma and Chef Mickey's but no Tusker House.

I've had only breakfast, but at both, and I would say the upper hand goes to Tusker. We did Boma this time bc we'd already done the characters, but I really think the food is better and more plentiful and Tusker too. However, if you're staying at AKL, it's very relaxing to just walk down and have breakfast in the morning rather rushing to Tusker. I want to say Tusker was only maybe $15 more total for our family. So, pros and cons to both! I didn't help at all, did I ...

Maybe I should add that we are staying concierge at AKL too so we may be sampling some of the food from Boma anyway?

Boma is my favorite buffet on property. That said, Tusker House does have similar food and characters. I'm really shocked by people who had bad experiences at Tusker, since IMO the menu was very similar to Boma. With it being a buffet though, I can definitely see food quality issues varying greatly from day to day though.

I'd ditch Chef Mickeys. It was by far the worst meal I have ever had at WDW, way worse than any quick service. It wasn't just because the food was cold, the quality/taste of the food seemed 'cheap or off' too. If it was a choice, I'd do Boma since you're staying at AKL and Tusker House at AK to get the character experience and not do chef mickeys.
