Turtle Farm--help!

I read in a guidebook that the turtle farm doesn't just raise turtles to be released into the ocean, but also for food. Is this true? I would love to see the baby turtles, but I prefer to see them swimming in ocean water, and not some cream based soup. Is there a way to avoid the turtle tasting portion of the excursion, or will I just need to skip it altogether?

is this the Grand Cayman excursion? or the turtle place on Key West?

Grand Cayman--I'm not sure if what I was reading was up to date, but it sounded plausible enough. Until I read it, I was assuming that the farm was some sort of happy turtle land.

Thanks for any info you can provide!

Hi goodfaerie.

Is there a way to avoid the turtle tasting portion of the excursion, or will I just need to skip it altogether?

There is no "turtle-tasting portion" to the excursion. It's like any "Brothel Tour" in Nevada - no eating the entertainment...

No turtle tasting. You can hold them/take your pictures with them, pet them. They have everything from babies to the great big ones...all in different tanks.

Because it is a working farm..yes, some are raised for consumption and some are released back into the wild.

They are beautiful..I would say it is a must do in Grand Cayman.

We did this excursion on a different cruise line and it was really fun to do! I would recommend you do it but no turtle soup at the end...or I would have puked!!! You get a walking tour of different turtle "tanks" where they house them early on until later and then there are some tanks at the end that house some turtles you can pick up. We have pictures of us holding them and they were so neat!! I hope to someday take my kids to the turtle farm (we are doing Eastern this time) but one day I hope to take them there and stingray city in Grand Cayman just because it is so neat!! Dont worry...it is just information only and no soup or eating of the turtles is involved!!!

You all are FABULOUS! Thank you so much--I was going to skip the tour, but I'm going to sign up for it tonight!

I was on the Eastern in Aug '02. We did not sign up the "tour", but did something similar and much cheaper.

As soon as you get off the ship, you will find a few independent tour operators. You can strike a deal for a private tour on your own for a much cheaper price. They ask for much less than the excursion price, and I was able to work out a deal for a private (and comfortable) car for just my family. Even after a very generous tip, we saved quite a bit, and we were able to work out a drop-of along 7 Mile Beach at the end; the ride back is a very inexpensive taxi ride. Another benefit was that we were able to stay longer at places we liked and move more quickly at places we weren't interested in. Another benefit is that you'll get an island's perspective from a native who isn't being scripted (or censored).

You will not get a guided tour of the turtle farm, but there is a self-guided tour w/ signs explaining each step of the process. There was a guided tour going through when we were there, and I caught a bit of it. I didn't think that we were missing much, because the guide wasn't saying anything that wasn't on the signs! And, the kids mostly wanted to play with the turtles anyway!

Some people are going to be nervous getting off ship at a strange port where they've never been and going off with a stranger. They appreciate the security and predictability that come with a Disney-arranged tour, and pre-arranged excursions are ideal for them.

My family has always opted for less structure when we travel. Sometimes we will miss something that we would have caught on the guided tour, but our most memorable travel experiences have been the ones were we went off the beaten path.

Thanks Dannyb--I think that's a great idea! I may have to do some convincing with a few other people in our party, but it sounds like a good tour--I'm glad to hear your kids enjoyed themselves!

Usually I would have a zippy comeback, but I'm still laughing and am now on my way to the ER for oxygen! Have a great week--you sure made mine!
