Turning a Non-Believer into a Believer: Making DBF love WDW and its FOOD!

your DBF looks just like Zachary Quinto from Heroes! great reviews

Haha EVERYONE tells him that! He's a big trekkie, though, he takes it as a huge compliment.
Check out this picture we took in the city!

Sorry, everyone, for all of the non-foodie info randomly thrown in! Thank you for your kind words-- if anyone enjoys reading my reviews/looking at my pictures half as much as I'm enjoying writing them, I'll consider it a job well done! My next review should be up in the morning!

OHANA
Saturday’s dinner was the one I was most excited for yet was the most disappointing.
We had to take the boat from the MK to the Poly since the monorail was down. We had to wait for a second boat, but we were very early anyway, so it was fine. We had a nice, ROMANTIC ride—the Electric Water Pageant was going on! We’ve never seen it before, so that was really nice.
When we landed on the Poly’s shores, we were immediately confused. The Poly is HUGE and very overwhelming, especially at night! I suppose POR (our resort) is big, but our room (Alligator Bayou Building 15) was so close to the lobby/main bus stop, that we never felt its size. It took us a good 7 minutes to get to the Poly main building. We decided to browse the lobby shops since we had an extra half hour and knew there was no chance we’d get in early! Zach was not impressed- -he’s not a “tropical” person. I thought it was pretty nice, but honestly, not worth the money. We decided that if we were going to splurge, it would definitely be for the Grand Floridian.
Once we ventured upstairs, we checked in and were given a beeper. To kill time, we got some fancy drinks from the bar.
Picture1335.jpg

After, we sat on one of the benches and had our name called after about 10 minutes. (I’d say we waited 5-10 minutes past our reservation time, not bad) Turns out they had tried paging us with the beeper, but it was broken! No worries—our hostess was really sweet, chatting to us the entire way to the table. We were in the main room, one row over from the window. I had to lean back a little to avoid a pole, but overall- great view of Wishes! (Our ADR was for 9:45—only time I could get!)
Once we sat…everything went downhill. The kids were doing their parade, which was really cute. HOWEVER, a large group of men (probably in their early 30’s) were celebrating a birthday next to us and our waitress and the food delivererer (??) paid zero attention to us and fawned over those men. It was terrible—it took forever to get our drinks, everything. I understand that big tables require a lot of time (I was a waitress one summer), but it was terrible. We were ignored while they were given special attention. Now, our server probably was playing to the table that she thought would give her the bigger tip, but little did she know—we’ve been known to tip 100% if we get great service. The bad service really put a damper on the mood (although not too much—we were at Disney, after all!)
As far as atmosphere, I thought it was great! Maybe when we have a family, we’ll bring our kids back. I think the races were adorable and the place had a fun vibe. The décor was cute!

Picture1337.jpg

Here’s a food breakdown:
1) Bread—dry and completely tasteless. We devoured the bread at every restaurant, but this we couldn’t choke down more than a bite of this.
Picture1342.jpg

2) Salad—okay. The dressing was a tad sweet for me, but that’s really a taste preference. I’m sure someone else could have loved it. The lettuce was crisp and not wilted.
Picture1341.jpg

3) Wings—disgusting. So fatty! There was a thick layer of stringy, mushy fat between the skin and the meat. I had only two bites. The chicken was clearly poor quality. Zach ate three or four, I think, probably because he was so hungry.
Picture1345.jpg

4) The dumpling skin was crispy and good, but the inside was gray and tasteless. I’ve made better frozen ones at home.
Picture1344.jpg

5) Noodles—too bland. There was a hint of sweetness, but not much,
Picture1347.jpg

6) Vegetables—fine. I mean, can you mess up broccoli and sugar snap peas? They were crisp, but not too flavored. They were fine.
Picture1346.jpg

7) Steak- the ONE piece I had was yummy and tender. Second best item of the night.
8) Shrimp—I had one. It was flavorless and rubbery. Zach had a couple and they were NOT properly cleaned. He pulled veins out of all of them.
9) Turkey/Pork—both were okay dipped in the mustard sauce. Again, though, it needed the kick of the sauce. (The mustard was the only one I liked. I dipped both the dumplings and turkey/pork in it)
Picture1348.jpg

10) Bread pudding—By far the best dessert of the trip. It almost made going to Ohana worthwhile. It was sweet, delicious, and with the perfect sauce. I loved the balance of the cold ice cream and the warm sauce/bread. I seriously could have killed this whole thing. Zach liked it too.

Now, more poor service. After Rosa brought us our drinks, we never saw her again until dessert. Our salad and other accompaniments were brought very quickly, but we waited a good time for our meats. Also, when he brought the steak skewer, there were only two pieces. They were delicious, so when he came back with the shrimp and asked if we wanted more meat, we requested steak. 15 minutes later, he returned with…shrimp!! When we said we didn’t want any, he got huffy and never came back. We never got our steak…
We sat there with all of the dirty plates for a good 15 minutes, not eating. Rosa finally came to clear the table and bring dessert. We left a very-undeserved 20% tip (it’s our minimum). I was so disappointed in the quality of the food and service. (Although that bread pudding tempts me to make another reservation there!!) We probably won’t go back until we have children. I wanted to love it, but I just couldn’t. We felt terribly neglected because of the table next to us—those six men got showered with leis and maracas and the lady who leads the parade chatted with them for a long time. They constantly had meat and seconds of so many side dishes.
Zach and I had wished we had been seated just five minutes later. Another couple who was right behind us got seated pretty soon after us and had the BEST service. Their waiter was so attentive, and they got SO much food. Their waiter had several other tables, too, I might add.
Sorry if this thing sounds a little rant-y, but I’m a firm believer in that if you’re a server, you should strive to provide service! Especially at Disney! We let them take away our Disney magic, but don’t worry! The next night was one of the best meals of my life. From service to food to atmosphere, Zach and I agreed that it was one of our best dates ever!

I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at 'Ohana. We went a few years ago and I felt the same way. Our service was terrible and I thought the food was just Ok. But DS wanted to give it another try so we went last year and even though service was still a bit slow, we thought the food was very good. Maybe in the future if you return, it will be better for you!

I would like to try it again (and request that we not have the same server). I would also want to talk to our food deliverer in the beginning and tell him what we will want and not want, just so we can be sure to get more steak! i did like some of the food-- the dessert, salad, vegetables, and steak really were quite good. The noodles and the dumplings had potential, too. It will just be a struggle trying to convince Zach to go back, especially when there are so many other places we want to try. Maybe in a couple of years.

To my loyal readers, I will be back soon! I will probably have my next update up either today or Wednesday.

You can order the Ohana bread pudding dessert at Kona.....that is the only thing DH likes about Ohana and he loves Kona so the next time we go there for dinner he will do this

Mmmm a way to get the bread pudding! The menu at Kona doesn't super appeal to me, but we're always up for trying new things!
I'm typing up the next post right now, so sorry for the wait!!

The next review will be slightly boring, sorry! On Sunday, we toured Epcot pretty hard, so when we decided to break for lunch, we went to the closest place with the shortest line—Liberty Inn! I know that some of you may be a bit :-O, but DBF really is fairly picky. I.e.—he likes tacos, so theoretically La Cantina de San Angel would be an option, but he only likes just beef in hard shells, which they don’t have. Plus, I really like to keep my CS meals simple. I’m afraid if I tried China’s CS or something like that, I’d hate it. It’s pretty hard to mess up chicken fingers or fries.
Of course, the menu at Liberty Inn is fairly limited, so we both got the chicken tender meal:
Picture1376.jpg

(I think I got 6 piece and Zach got 8)
Like earlier in the week at Colombia Harbor House, both the chicken and fries were hot, crispy and yummy. They truly hit the spot for what we needed at the time—something filling and hot. Gets a 5/5 for both of us.
As far as service/atmosphere, I don’t know. I waited around 10 minutes for my food, the longest for any CS (even longer than at WPE!). I thought that was kind of ridiculous. We ate around 2, still considered the lunch rush. They should have had plenty of chicken finger meals waiting. Of course, since ours was clearly cooked to order, it was hot, which was good.
The seating is cute—we liked the flags of the thirteen colonies. Like I said, it hit the spot, and we would come here again. There are other places I think I’d like to try—like La Cantina de San Angel, or Sunshine Seasons, but I think if we were close by and were hungry, we’d go to the Liberty Inn and not regret it!

This next meal, which I honestly wasn’t too excited for, ended up not only being the best dinner of the trip, but one of mine and DBF’s best dates ever! It was just one of those nights where everything is just wonderful!
Although, it of course did not start off wonderfully! We had gone back to POR to rest a bit and change for dinner. When we arrived back at Epcot, it was 6:30, a little more than an hour before our Coral Reef reservation at 7:35. We noticed that the wait for Test Track was 40 mins, and as we had decided this was our favorite ride of the trip (first time ever riding it for either of us), we decided to hop on. BAD DECISION! I guess the ride just backed up, because it was 7:32 :-O when we got into the pre-show room. I managed to enjoy the ride, but I told Zach that we needed to SPRINT to the Seas Pavilion. Since Zach was wearing sneakers, I let him run faster and check us in. We probably checked in about 10 minutes late and had about 15 minutes to wait. We needed it to catch our breath!
When we were seated, I drew my breath in:
Picture1390.jpg

I really thought it was very beautiful. I love aquariums, and the lighting was so perfect. Although I can imagine families with children having a great time, we really loved it and thought it was super romantic. 5/5 for atmosphere.
We were seated on the top tier, which I was initially upset over, but when I saw how some parents let their kids run up to the tank and yell and point at the fish right in the ears of people eating against the tank, I was glad! We could still see all the fish, but we had a very private experience.
Our waiter was David E, and the only one I wrote a letter to Disney about. He had this dry, sarcastic sense of humor that is SO me/DBF. He was also so sweet, asking us about our vacation. When I told him we were on our second to last night, he said “Oh, but you’ll be back soon!” Zach responded—“Oh, yes we will!” That really made me smile and even choked me up a bit. I was afraid he really only went because I wanted to and wasn’t going to enjoy himself, but magical moment after magical moment just made him fall in love with Disney. It made me so happy! Anyway, David was super knowledgeable about the menu and had absolutely no problem doing the substitutions we wanted. He really made our night. (We tipped him $30 on a $65 bill, and he came back and told us that we were very generous and gave us light up Tinkerbelle and Herbie! So sweet—we totally didn’t expect that!)
Onto the food!
Our bread was brought out immediately after we were seated. No joke, I seriously killed one loaf on my own! The butter was super soft and spreadable, and the bread was just crusty on the outside and hot and soft. Delicious! I enjoyed myself many a Disney bread this week, but this one was definitely a favorite!
Picture1396.jpg

I chose the Catch of the Day, which David told me was Halibut! Yummy, one of my favorite white fishes! I am not a risotto fan, so I swapped it out for the roast potatoes that came with the NY Strip.
Picture1398.jpg

The fish was cooked just perfect. It was flaky on the inside and had a nice crispy skin. It was served super hot, to my delight. Those potatoes…my goodness. At this point, I was convinced that Disney could not make a side dish I wouldn’t like! (Except maybe some of the O’hana accompaniments!) They were hot, crispy, and well seasoned! They really tasted great with the fish. The greens on the side of the dish was the watercress from Zach’s meal. He’s not a fan of most green things, so I happily took them for him. They were slightly on the wet/oily side from whatever tomato broth they had been in, but that made a nice contrast to the dry (not in a bad way!) fish and potatoes.
Zach got the NY Strip, with no tomatoes.
Picture1399.jpg

He loved this! It was on par with his T-Rex steak, which was absolutely delicious. It was cooked perfectly and he really liked the potatoes too. Just nothing to complain about.
We were both pretty stuffed, but I really wanted to try both the mousse and the wave, so we ordered them:
Picture1404.jpg

I had a couple of bites of the Wave, but that was really more Zach’s dessert. He loved the raspberries, and the cake part, but he’s not a white chocolate fan, so he ate around the center.
The mousse was more mine. My goodness! I swear I was tipsy after four bites! It was delicious, with a perfectly creamy texture, but there was no way I could finish it.
All in all, it was perfect. The food was exactly as desired and the service and atmosphere was beyond lovely. Like I said, I wrote a letter to Disney about David E. and they said they would inform his supervisor about our compliments. I truly hope they did, because we think of David E often, and we’d love for him to know that!
There are so many more restaurants in Disney that I want to try, but I know for Zach, and for me as well, that we couldn’t do a trip without a meal at the Coral Reef!

Loving your reviews and the pics! I don't think they are too big AT ALL!!!

Wow, what a great report. I'm really enjoying reading it, and am getting ideas of where we will be eating on our next trip. I was wondering how T-Rex was, and now we'll have to work it in for our next trip. I'm sure our grandson will love it. And your pictures are making me hungry! Thanks for posting.

Thanks! I'm loving re-living my trip. T-Rex was really so fun. I have a friend who's in the CP, and he got a burger at T-rex and hated it. I think it pays to be adventurous there!! My salmon me made re-love salmon-- I get cravings for it all the time. We're making it tonight for dinner! (Won't be as good!)

Wolgang Puck Express

We went to Epcot in the morning of our last day. At some point, we needed to head back to Downtown Disney to look at the Lego store for a possible present for DBF’s younger brother. Thus, I suggested leaving Epcot at 1:00 p.m., walking over to the Beach Club, and catching the bus from there. Of course, I had an ulterior motive with this plan—lunch at WPE! We arrived there probably around 2:00 pm and there was only one person in line in front of us. We ordered quickly, and sat down. There were plenty of empty tables:
Picture1472.jpg

I thought it had a nice, airy atmosphere. It reminded me almost of like Panera Bread. Casual, but still nice.
Service was fine. I really don’t think you can get a better value off a CS credit anywhere in the World. Read utensils, real plates, drinks delivered to the table! Our drinks were brought very quickly. The food took maybe 10 minutes, if that. This day was fairly hot, and we got pretty lost trying to find the Beach Club bus stop, so we didn’t mind just relaxing in the air conditioning with our drinks (just Coke and diet Coke).
I ordered the four cheese pesto pizza, with a cookie for dessert:
Picture1474.jpg

Picture1468.jpg

This was absolutely delicious. The crust was nice and crispy, and the cheese was super hot! The pesto wasn’t incredibly strong, but I tend to like my pesto VERY basil-y and garlic-y, so I’m sure for someone else it would have been fine. The tomatoes were obviously fresh. Of course, I did not come close to finishing it. Two people with small appetites could definitely split one. This was definitely my absolute favorite counter service meal all week, but I think when we return (and we definitely will!) I’ll go for something else. All of the pasta dishes looked and sounded delicious. As for value on the DDP—some of those dishes were like $16! Oh, the cookie, which I saved to eat on the plane the next day (as did DBF, he also ordered a cookie), was great! It was moist and have the perfect ratio of chocolate chips to the cookie.
Now, when DBF ordered, I chastised him. He wanted the adult chicken finger meal. I could not believe it. He had had at least two different meals of chicken tenders this week! I tried to convince him to get the pasta with meatballs or something else, but he said he really wanted the chicken. After it arrived and I sampled it, I could have eaten my words. It was absolutely delicious. The fries were hot and had a yummy seasoning. The chicken was just SO fresh and moist and….there are no words!! I think I ate one of those chicken tenders all by myself haha. This was also a huge portion, and even though Zach can usually eat a lot, he couldn’t finish it, even with my help!
Picture1473.jpg

We loved it here! We definitely will come back next time.
