Turning 30 with the Mouse - 05/12/09 update

Sounds like you had a very interesting day and VERY, VERY crowded. I've been to Disney six times and NEVER saw a line for the People Mover is what I call it :)

I just love being there and meeting all kinds of people. And if you get nice people it's interesting to talk to them.

And I love the pictures of Tomorrowland by the way.

I seen a line for it once before, back when I was a CM I was at the MK one day in July and there was a line. But that's the only other time that I've seen a line.

i'll be posting my pics soon.

Hi. Welcome. But I have a strange question to ask you: what pics? :confused3

I finally found your TR. Love it so far.:thumbsup2 You are an excellent writer too.

I don't like watching the parades either, they see like such a waste of time to me, I'm too impatient to stand there and wait for them.

Side note: We got the Kitchen Sink at Beaches N Cream when we went in December. There were 6 of us eating it and we still didn't finish it all. FTR, it was delicious!!! Those brownies they put in them are to die for!

Found your tr and LOVE IT! Especially seeing all of the Christmas decorations at Disney! I can't wait for our trip in December

Thanks Dolce. How did you like being a CM there? The People Mover will be closed when we're there since Space Mtn. will be closed :(

Can't wait to see more pics

Welcome! :goodvibes The decorations are nice. I loved it. Seriously, I'll never forget opening that balcony door that first day and have "Silver Bells" drift inside my room.

Everything just felt perfect at that moment.

I actually loved being a CM. I really like trying to make someone's day. You have to get over the fact that Disney is a business first. Obviously, working there you really see that side of it. Impersonal management decisions ... less magic. But you’re the one that is to create the magic.

Some people can do it .. some can’t. There will be people that leave the college program early on because of that.

Originally there was gossip that Space Mountain would close this year. I was more upset to learn that the TTA would probably have to close with it than I was in hearing that Space Mountain would go down! I was thankful that it didn’t happen on my trip. I’m sorry that it will on yours. Just another reason to start planning another trip – right? :teeth:

Well we'll have to have the funds..plus we're planning on moving late this year...Possibly we could go in 2011 for my fortieth birthday celebration :)

Right now I'm in the pre-planning stages of our meals!!

Whew, I finally caught up! What a GREAT trip report!!! I can't wait for the rest of the installments. Time for me to go to bed now, since it's 1240am, but reading about your adventures was worth staying up late for!:goodvibes

Paging Mr Morrow, Mr Tom Morrow, your party from Saturn has arrived, please give them a ring!
-one of my faves too :goodvibes

I love your interaction with the characters. I'm slightly afraid of things in costume. I make an exception for Disney characters, but it's still like, "uh hi, picture? k thanks, bye."

I love the interaction with the Characters...so much fun :)

YAY! I'm here!! Your trip sounds like so much fun...but girl, you are crazy to go during Christmas!! This pictures says it all!!
CIMG2452-1.jpg

You have to pick a slower time to go...and if you need some company, I'm in!!:cool1:

Thanks. This is the first time I've ever really tried. Then, again, this was the first year that I actually attempted to seek out a bunch of characters. (In the past I’d maybe stop for one or two, but it wasn’t a big deal – unless it was a chipmunk!!) There was a thread that I've been reading the past year about what to say to characters. That inspired me to try and actually have fun with it some. Normally I'm like you, onelilspark, "uh hi, picture? k thanks, bye."

I may take you up on that one of these days - that'd be a blast!
But I'm now spoiled - I will only stay at the Boardwalk Inn. :snooty:

Hey, have you gone to Disneyland yet? I'm not certain that you actually told me your date - I think that you just said it was in this month.

Yes I'll search for that thread too..and I love interacting with the characters.

We're going in april b/c of the 4/3 deal..and eating at the Norway country for lunch one day :)

I can't recall the title of the thread but some of those types of threads do pop up every now and again, keep a watch out. It can be fun but I'm not so good with face characters. It's easier for me, as an adult, to be silly around a non-face character.

Hey all: I should have another update tomorrow night. Pictures are the delay. I got into a fight with Photobucket a couple of nights ago and it almost won.

Note: I said almost.

Over to Liberty Tree Tavern I went.

CIMG2479-1.jpg

(See? The sign proves that I was there)

For some reason I wanted a picture of the woman standing outside, holding the menu.

CIMG2480-1.jpg

It was one of those 'have no idea why I want a picture but let’s take one anyways' moments. Another guy walked out of the restaurant. The woman thought it would be great if I took his picture also.

So I did.

CIMG2481-1.jpg

They didn’t realize that their pic’s would wind up posted on a the internet – did they?
That’s what you get when you let crazy strangers take your picture.
That’s why I run the other way from a pointed camera. I’m watching, I tell ya. I’m watching.

I checked in about ten minutes before my scheduled ADR. I then sat and chatted with a woman who was a walk-up (Yup, Christmas Eve and they accepted a walk-up at LTT). This was her first time solo to a theme park but she wasn’t solo to Disney as her husband was off playing golf – just solo to the theme park for the day.

She was quickly sat and a short time later so was I.

CIMG2484-1.jpg

No, that's not the area in which I was sat. They put me in the George Washington room. This was my first time to the Liberty Tree Tavern and being alone, my server brought out smaller portions for me.

The food really wasn’t very good. Seriously, it just wasn’t. I apologize to those of you who love it. I’m not a picky eater – at all - but I really couldn’t find much to like about this selection. Well, I did enjoy the beef some. I thought the potatoes editable, but not good, the mac and cheese horrid and the turkey dry.

I quickly found that it is hard to have your pictures taken, solo, at a character dinner. There really isn’t anyone to take the photo. It seemed that the character appearances rarely ever coincided with the appearance of my server. Fortunately, a lady at the table next to mine was extremely eager to take my picture with the characters – demanding was more like it. She’d jump up and rush over and take the camera before anyone could say much of anything. I assume that she was trying to be nice, so I was thankful to have her do so except I did find it odd when one guy, that worked there and who had been chatting with me earlier… I don’t know his exact job there – server, maybe? – he actually sat down at my table and chatted with me a bit. He was back by and was about to take the camera to take my picture with one of the characters when that lady about knocks him over to grab the camera in order to take the picture. It was a bit odd.

Hmmm….

:confused3

Goofy was the first to stop by

I pulled out my stuffed Chip and Dale. Both Chip and Dale loved it.

Chip tried to tear off the stuffed Dale (and do what – who knows? Stuff it in a garbage disposal probably. He was giving the stuffed Dale nasty glares. I get the impression that they don't get along very well.). Dale attempted to run off with both. A CM almost had to chase him down to get them back. I had to fight for it.

I won. :thumbsup2

Minnie stopped by

I asked her who she liked better: Chip or Dale. She didn’t want to say but finally pointed to Chip. She told me to not say anything or Chip and Dale would end up in a fight. I wasn’t even allowed to tell Pluto.

Of course I told Pluto. Pluto picked Dale but made sure that I understood that he liked both.

This was the first trip I really attempted to meet and joke with some of the characters. Except for the mandatory chipmunk photo and the occasional photo with Mickey; I don’t normally pay a lot of attention to the characters. I’ve read the thread of fun things to say to the characters and decided to have some fun with it this time around. Most of the characters really seemed to like joking around – even though I was an adult. Then again, maybe they just assumed that I’m insane were trying to humor me – fearful of the results if they didn’t. :p

After a quick dessert, I was out of there and on my way back to Tomorrowland. I planned to attend the 6:15 show of Mickey’s Twas the Night Before Christmas. After all, it was the night before Christmas this night.

Yeah, I lasted all of 15 seconds before deciding that I really didn’t want to see it. I'm just not big on shows at WDW. It's weird as I love the theater. I've taken theater production classes in London that required me to attend the London theater on a weekly basis .. but when I'm at Disney, I'm soooo not into the theater type shows.

I went over to Space Mountain to use my Fast Pass instead. The FP line was almost to the door! Fortunately, it moved fast. I was almost up to load when they needed a party of two. Surprisingly, there weren’t any parties of two before me and they had to do with me, a party of one.

Not complaining.

Although I almost fell flat on my face trying to hop over the rail so I could go up to load.

There was a guy – looked to be late forty’s, maybe early fifty's if he has good genetics, in the first seat of the second car. I left the middle seat empty and grabbed the last seat of the second car.

The guy kept turning around to look at me. He asked me a brief question that I couldn’t quite hear over the noise. Then he kept staring at me. And staring at me. And staring at me. I was getting a really odd vibe from him. Finally it dawned on me that he might have been attempting to flirt with me.

OK, sir! Please stop wiggling your eyebrows at me and turn back around. I’m not interested. No offense, you're a little too old for my taste.

No, I said stop wiggling your eyebrows.

Seriously, he was.

*sigh*

The ride was fun. I’ve determined this side is my favorite – it’s to the left as the line divides. I hop out of the car and am off before the guy could get out. I didn’t want to see anymore wiggling eyebrows.

Really, I promise, I don't.

There was still a heavy traffic load for the TTA but as it’s a quick load, it’s not much of a problem. I rode it twice despite the line of people trying to get on; the CM let me remain in my seat after the first time around.

Feet up, I enjoyed the views of Tomorrowland at night. Did I mention that this is my favorite ride in all of Disney? :goodvibes

A quick trek back over to Frontierland and I use my FP to ride BTRM. The stand-by line still looked really long. The FP line seemed long at first but moved quickly. I was on the ride within 5 – 10 minutes. I wanted to jump into the stand-by line; hoping that maybe it wasn’t that long. Someone asked the question to the CM as I approached the stand-by entrance – his response was that the real line time was 60 minutes.

Darn.

I decided to check out the Jungle Cruise – that is another attraction that I enjoy more at night rather than the daytime. I rushed to beat the 8:00 Spectro parade. I did not want a repeat from earlier that day – stuck in Frontierland while a parade marches on by. I did want to see Spectro that night – but not that one.

At some point during the day I had finally grabbed a FP for Jungle Cruise. Also, at some point of the day I did ride Pirates of the Caribbean. I can't recall when exactly, but after lunch and before dinner. I think at some point of my passing the sign read 20 minutes. Still very skeptical, I entered the line and after a short chat with a woman from Chicago, found myself on the boat within about 10 minutes. I remember the ride because I found myself in one of those “What would you do? :confused3 ” situations.

There are countless threads on the DIS in regards to people who take flash pictures on a dark ride. Believe it or not, I’ve never had a problem with this before.

I had a problem now.

Obviously, if I post on the controversial political threads on this message board, I am a person that has no problem whatsoever with speaking up.

So, what would I do? What did I do? I politely asked her to stop with the pictures. I wasn’t rude about it or sarcastic. I didn’t even yell at her. I simply asked her to please stop with the flash.

Beside, flash pictures on that type of ride would turn out to be crap anyways. She didn’t want flash pictures; really, she didn’t. Trust me.

After the second time of politely asking her to stop – she stopped. Had she not stopped? I wouldn’t have said nor done anything else. I wasn’t about to cause a scene or anything. But I often wondered what I would say and/or do in that type of situation and now I know.

Oh! And I had ice cream at some point of the day! Peppermint and Mint Chocolate Chip! I think that it must have been before Pirates.

It was good. ::yes::

I've only been to Liberty Tree Tavern once and that was 1986..so I can't remember the food all that well. Sorry it wasn't good. We aren't going there in April!!. Sorry about that guy staring at you...that must have been uncomforable

So, back to later that evening and back to standing outside of the Jungle Cruise with a FP firmly griped in one hand; I looked around and realized that a FP really wasn’t needed at this time of the day –or rather, night- but I used it anyways. I had a pretty good skipper; she looked to be around my mother’s age and was pretty funny.

(I'm horrible at guessing age. I think it's because no one can ever correctly guess mine; everyone thinks that I'm a lot younger than I am. I've never seriously tried to judge and guess other's. So, all of my descriptions are vague and grouped into about three groups: 'young kid', 'around my age', and 'an older person')

After exiting the Jungle Cruise I passed by the Swiss Family Tree house and was shocked to see it open. I assumed that it was one of the attractions that closed at dusk.

Apparently, I assumed wrong.

I joined several people on a quick trek thru it. It was pretty dark in several areas – as in could barley see where you were walking dark. Was it really supposed to be open? In this day and age it seemed like a lawsuit waiting to happen. :sad2:

I finally made my way back to a jammed packed Main Street. Everyone was waiting for Holiday Wishes, including me! I squeezed into a spot on the sidewalk in front of the ice cream parlor… except too many tall people were in front of me.

I know, I know; you look up for fireworks, but looking up I still saw heads. I'm just too short and they were just too tall.

Back to the thing about being a solo traveler and no one paying attention to you? I wormed my way up, completely unnoticed, closer to the hub for a better view.

Darn.

Still too many tall people in front of me. I’m still too short. So, I sneak up a bit further and finally I’m in the hub – unnoticed.

Not bad.

The show was nice. Being my first time to Disney at Christmas; it was my first time to see Holiday Wishes. It was after the show finished that was the scary part.

The crowds. :crowded:

I wanted to go to Liberty Square for the 10:00 pm Spectro Magic parade.

Half of the crowd wanted to go home and the other half- I don’t know if even they knew where they wanted to go. Being on the right hand side of the right hand side of the crowd being directed by the traffic flow CM’s, I was unwillingly being fed with the flow of people and it appeared that we were heading into Tomorrowland.

Problem: I didn’t want to go to Tomorrowland.

I looked over to a couple of men on my left and made the comment that if I stay on this side of the masses I’d be swept into Tomorrowland – wouldn’t I? They looked ahead of us, they looked at me and then nodded their heads: Yup.

They stopped and let me dart across them so now I’m on the left hand side of the right hand side of the crowd flow.

(Am I making any sense here?)

My hopes are to circle the hub and branch off for Liberty Square.

That doesn’t exactly happen.

I’m suddenly forced to a stop by a mother with her adult wheelchair bound son that looked to be around my age. I don’t know what the son’s disabilities were, not my businesses, but it quickly becomes clear to me that the adult son doesn’t have an adult mentality and is unable to fully understand the situation. They were forced to a stop by the massive crowd as she really couldn’t navigate the wheelchair anywhere and the son couldn’t understand why people were stepping on his feet. The poor mother was part protective mamma bear and part overwhelmed by the sea of people swarming directly towards her.

“My son is down here. Please stop stepping on his feet!”
“Please watch where you’re going! My son is down here!”

Of course no one was paying any attention, so focused as they were on moving thru the crowds they didn’t listen to a word she screamed until they tripped over her son in his wheelchair. At this point I was at a standstill beside them and was chatting with the two of them. The son looked up and kept asking me why people were stepping on his feet – why couldn’t they see his feet? He informed me that they put stuff on his feet so people would see them but everyone still stepped on his feet. He pointed down and I looked in his pointed direction and saw the glow necklaces that they must have purchased earlier that evening from a merchandise cart wrapped around his feet.

I quickly make the decision to squeeze around them and plant myself in front of the wheelchair as a barrier in order to prevent the crowds from stomping on the poor guy’s feet. Obviously I was a much more visual obstacle and except for a few strollers slamming into my heels and being knocked over and into the wheel chair once (thank goodness I stood facing the mother and son as I was able to grab onto the back of the chair to steady myself and not fall into the son’s lap!) things became a lot smoother. No one else stepped on the son’s feet.

The crowd finally began thinning and the mother was finally confident that she could move on. I wished them a good night and a Merry Christmas and finally made it over to Liberty Square.

I accidently took a seat in the handicap viewing area. They hadn’t roped off the area yet. I knew it was in that area but I didn’t realize that it went so far down. I moved across the street and sat on a wall in front of my least favorite MK attraction: The Hall of Presidents.

I don’t like that attraction – it puts me to sleep. I haven’t seen it since Bill Clinton was the speaking President and I have no intention of ever seeing it again. I also haven’t seen the American Adventure at EPCOT.

I’m not very patriotic while at Disney … am I?

I sit to wait for the parade. A mom and two late teen (or very early twenty) girls from Georiga are sitting down the wall from me. Eventually I decide to move over to the curb – by the rope – in front of them as there is a lamp post that I can use for a back rest.

Being alone you can’t help but eavesdrop on conversations. It’s not intentional but when you’re not having your own conversation you overhear everything said around you. So, I listened to the chattering going on behind me until I finally butted into the conversation. It was then that I found out three things about this family:

1) This was their very first time to Walt Disney World
2) They’d been in the park since opening that morning but they’d only ridden the Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain
3) They thought that fast passes cost $50.00 per person

So, they’ve spent the entire day basically just walking around the park. They probably wouldn’t have ridden Space Mountain but the mother had walked up to a FP CM at the ride for a question and (I assume that she said something, without realizing it, that clued the CM in that they’ve done nothing the entire day) the CM gave them FP’s that could be used right then.

You know what? It was their attitudes that amazed me. They were so darn happy to be at the Magic Kingdom. It didn’t matter that they’ve done nothing all day long except walk around and look at crowds – they were having a blast and were so happy! They went on and on to me about how excited they were for their first time at Disney – they were going to be there for the next day, Christmas Day, but that was the last day of their trip. They were also excited over their experience at Universal Studios earlier in the week. There they’d been on every ride and got to hold one of the balloons in the parade.

I listened to their excitement and stories and explained how fast pass works to them. They were excited to learn that it was free. They were still trying to determine what they were going to do for the next day. They wanted to attempt a split day at DHS and EPCOT. I attempted to help them finalize their plans and give them all of the tips and advice that I could. I think that it was finally decided to do the entire day at DHS and I told them to try and call Disney Dining that night (if they’re still open) or first thing the next morning (after Toy Story Mania, of course) go up to the front of the park and try to get an ADR at some place like 50’s Prime Time Diner so they’d have a place to sit down to eat the next day.

The parade started a little late… probably due to clearing out the mass chaos on Main Street. It had been five years since I’d seen this parade. It’s a fun little parade. I think that the Halloween’s Boo To You parade is the only one that I love. I’m just not a big parade person. But I really enjoyed this one.

FYI: I don't use flash for night shots. Only a few shots that I'll be posting will have flash. I hate flash, it blows everything out. I've found that even though my camera is only a point and shoot, if I turn off flash and set it to a 2 sec timer to get rid of camera shake; I can get a pretty good pic. Any blur that you see, like around the hands, is movement.

After the parade finished, I sat there for a moment debating as if I should attempt to help out the family behind me or not.

After giving it a moment's thought, I asked if they were going to stay in the park until closing at midnight or go ahead and leave. That had been a topic of discussion earlier and they’d been leaning towards the leaving part. I had one last fast pass for Big Thunder Mountain burning in my pocket but I felt horrible that this family had hardly done anything during their very first visit to the Magic Kingdom. The next thing I knew I was offering to be their tour guide for the remainder of the evening - if they wanted to stick around. They looked at each other and grinned. Sure!

Off we go to Mickey’s Philihar Magic. They loved it. Who wouldn't? :confused3

Disneyland - you're missing out!

Next we walked onto Splash Mountain. Seriously, no line at all. Straight up to the logs we went.

I got wet.

I hate getting wet. I got wet.

*sigh*

Over to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad we go. I didn’t use my FP as the rest of my party didn’t have one but the standby line didn’t look bad. An odd thing happened. We got to the top before going down the ramps to board the trains and the CM put me down the FP line vs. the Standby line. We passed up some of the standby line and got on a train. I didn’t realize what had happened at first and by the time I realized that we should have been on the other side, we were almost to the train.

Yes, I sort of felt guilty for that but I'm glad, time management wise, it happened.

After Big Thunder I managed to squeeze in Pirates of the Caribbean just as the park began to close. All in all they left with smiling faces and I hope that they had a great time at DHS the next day.

A few more pictures on my way out …

CIMG2645-1.jpg

It’s after midnight. I text a “Merry Christmas” to both my mom and my sister. My mom is staying at my sister’s house in Austin for Christmas. I then get a phone call back.

“It’s not Christmas yet.”

Oh yeah, Texas is an hour behind me. They’re all up still. I chat with my sister… she’s peeved that I’m not at home this Christmas despite that she’s never home for Christmas anymore. She’s usually in England and before that she was traveling in South America for the holidays.

I speak to my brother in-law and find out that the reason why she’s really peeved (at least right then) is that they’re trying to play a game and it’s not working out so well with three people – they need me there as the fourth person.

Most of the bus ride is spent in conversation with them. I hang up just as I arrive home.

CIMG2647-1.jpg

Yes, home.

...before arriving back at my room. A quick open of my balcony doors reveals that the boardwalk is dead outside. It doesn’t appear that even Jellyrolls is open – did they close early for Christmas Eve?

*sigh*

*yawn*

Off to bed I go.

I am LOVING your TR!!! It's so nice to read and I love the pictures so much. I'd love to go to WDW at Christmas but w/ my DW working for the school system it's really hard to.

Again, your pics are stunning. I wish I could see them full-size! What a wonderful thing you did for that man and his mom, as well as the girls from Georgia.:) I'm sure they will always remember you for that.:thumbsup2
