Turning 21 during a cruise

We are booked on the May 2016 Transatlantic. It sails from May 15 - 29, 2016.

Our son, who is going with us, turns 21 on May 22, 2016.

Will he be able to legally have a drink with us to celebrate his birthday? How does that work on the transatlantic cruises?

When we did the Mediterranean cruise a few years back, he was over 18 and allowed to drink with our consent, as the cruise was a closed loop from European countries where the drinking age is 18. But on our transatlantic, he was not allowed to do that, because the cruise originated in the US and was not a closed loop.

Anyone know how this works? Thanks!

Yes he can my daughter was 18 and could drink in Palo.

As long as parents are there they seem ok with it,

Once he turns 21 there would be no issues at all. They will know he's of legal drinking age if the swipe his KTTW card. May be an issue for the first week.

I would call Disney on this- with other lines, it is the age you enter the ship. If you are leaving from a US port the age you enter the ship controls for the duration of the cruise. Disney might be different so I would confirm this.

We had a somewhat similar experience a few weeks ago. Our daughter was turning 13 on the ship, and my wife wanted to reserve a massage for her in the spa (mother/daughter package), and apparently you have to be 13 to reserve something like that. They would not let us do it the day before her birthday, but made us wait until she was actually 13 mid-cruise. I would imagine a similar thing would apply here, as a worst case scenario. Either way, I have to believe that if he had a driver's license or passport with him to prove his age, then no bartender is likely going to deny him.

I kind of vaguely remember this as well, so that is why I was wondering about this.
Good idea on calling DCL - it would good to get the "officlal" answer.

I've heard that also.
