Turkey legs - do we dare?

I think the pink color is what turns a lot of people off - if you're not used to, or have never had smoked poultry, you may think they are undercooked. They're not, all/most smoked poultry is a pink-ish color. I am dying to try one on my next trip in 28 days! It's the messiness of them that scares me more than anything!

My 11 year old, who is the pickiest eater on earth, loves them. He got them the last three times we were there. :teeth:

Wow! All of these posts are almost convinving me to try one during one of my upcoming trips. I had a turkey leg once at a local Renaissance fair (King Richard's Faire for you New Englanders) and I wasn't very impressed. But this thread is making me think about trying it again.

I think they are kind of gross. The flavor is alright - it tastes like ham to me, more than it does smoked turkey - but there are long, skinny, stretchy stringy things in it (veins? arteries? tendons? ligaments? - not sure exactly what they are) and those "things" turned my stomach and I won't touch another one again.

Ok - now I'm rethinking trying one of these!

When we go to Disney, my SIL can't wait to have a turkey leg. I have never tried them but he loves them. I am somehow put off by carrying a hunk of meat around eating at it.

We tried them and we're all set now. We were really excited to try them after they were featured on an episode of Unwrapped on the Food Network. We were really disappointed. First of all, they don't taste like turkey at all. (So that may be a plus if you don't like dark meat turkey) Someone described them as ham on a stick, and that is more what they tasted like to us. They are also "pink" which seemed so unappetizing to us. Thank goodness our meal came with chips..at least we had something to fill our tummies with until dinner.

Ditto. They smelled great. They looked delicious. But they were a big disappointment. I agree with everything in the quote above.

The thought of taking on a huge turkey leg in 90 degree heat just didn't do it for us. But, from this thread they sound pretty good. I may try one on the next trip. Maybe... Also, I wonder who came up with the idea of marketing them? It's not something that would come to mind while dreaming up food ideas for WDW.

Ok, this is a must have for me on all my trips. They do taste like ham, but I love them.......HOWEVER! The trip we made for cheer nationals in Dec 2004. got my turkey leg in MGM, tasted fine. That night and the next day,,,OMG,,,not a good thing, in the bathroom alot!!!!! I was so afraid to eat one after that, but I did on our last trip and it was fine. Who knows if it was the turkey that made me sick or I was getting sick anyone.....??? :confused3

Generally speaking when someone gets sick from a food borne illness the natural tendency is to blame the last thing they had to eat. In most cases however the incubation period is longer than that and real culprit was from a few meals before that. So the leg may not have been to blame....either way it stinks to be sick on vacation.

I love turkey, turkey legs & smoked turkey...however....where are they getting these from - HUGE turkeys??? Really - think about it - the turkey legs they sell are much much larger than your average or above average turkey - what are they feeding these turkeys?!?!?! I grew up on a farm where turkeys were raised to be eaten - and I've never seen a turkey with a leg that big!

Ok reading back over this - is the plural of turkey "turkeys" or "turkies?" It's getting late....

Please don't flame me but I can't even look at someone eating one . It reminds me to much of canibles, I do eat a small amount of meat , so I am not a vegetarian but I cannot and will not rip / chew meat off of a bone.

This past Oct I saw ( but quickly looked away ;) ) ( FYI I do not make faces or anything at the people , I just look away ) many many people eating them, so definately people do  them.

Wasnt too sure myself about trying a Turkey leg but if they taste like ham thats cool we all lurve ham & we are going in December so just the job to warm us up :woohoo:

We have been going to Disney for a while now and have never had a Turkey Leg, but the way those smell once you enter Frontierland.....YUMMY!
I think this may be the year we share one while watching the Splash Mountain Suckers:scared1: ...I mean riders!:)

I would like to try one but my DH won't let me. Last Dec while at WDW we got sick and ended up at Celebration Hospital. The first thing that they asked was, "did you eat the turkey legs". Since then, every time I suggest that we give them a try, I get that DW look.

Last December, I planned on trying one, but I was never hungry for a turkey leg when we passed a place that had them. After reading that the hospital asked you if you had eaten one, I think that is enough to dissuade me forever!!! ;)

Disney must sell hundreds of thousands legs per year. I am sure that getting sick from them is not the norm. We just thought it odd that we were being treated for a food born illness and the hospital workers jumped to the turkey leg question.

My son started getting these at age 5 and now must get at least one every trip (he's 9.5 now). I tried one and wasn't a fan. I thought it tasted like bacon. But now that you mention it, maybe it was more like ham. Who knows, maybe I'll try another in a week or so.

Don't like ham so I don't like Turkey legs. I did try a piece of one with a friend a few trips ago and yuck, give me a hot dog at Casey's any time.
there are so many good things to eat at WDW, I don't think a turkey leg is one I would ever put on my list.
I prefer a chicken wrap at Peco's Bills or 1/2 a rotiserie chicken at Cosmic Rays.

I've never had one a Disney World, but have had one at Dollywood. I was around 9 years old, and I actually took a bite, went back up to the counter and asked the lady if it was ham... so I'm with a few other that thinks it tastes like ham. If you're not a fan of dark meat, I'd advise not to try it.
