Turkey Day Gang 2009

Karen--

Keep washing those hands!!!! (you can never take the nurse out of me). Hope those germies stay away from you. What University do you work at? Wash U or St. Louis or another?

I know it is a horrific pun, and arguably in bad taste...but....this puts a whole new spin on "Wash U"...

I work at Washington University (or Wash U as many call it). Oh, and no...it's not in Washington State or Washington DC...it's officially called Washington University in St. Louis. It's a private university (with an astronomical tuition) that's actually ranked very highly (even if people still ask is St. Louis near Seattle?).

And Chuck, it's not in bad taste (though GermX can taste bad from what I understand)...it does put a whole new spin on Wash U! (Actually some of the kids have put stickers on the hand sanitizers already saying "I'll Wash U!")

Take care everyone. Hope the germies stay away from everyone!

Just chiming in from the weekend....

Was having a great, quiet, relaxing weekend when I came home yesterday to find my 12 year old Australian Shepherd struggling to breath. Of course my DH was gone on his motorcycle and the vet wasn't open. I had to rush him to the emergency animal hospital in the next county. I had decided on the way that this was it and I didn't want him to suffer anymore:sad1:. Once they gave him a sedative to try to relax him, his poor heart just stopped. I had him for almost 13 years and he was my baby long before I had kids. My heart is broken right now and I definitely need this cruise to help me get through the day! I was so tired of crying last night and I kept telling myself "think about the cruise" over and over again to get my mind off of it. Sorry to post a sad note, but my heart is definitely heavy today.:sad2:

These losses are always so hard. How lucky you were to have a dog for so long! AND how lucky your dog was to have come into such a loving family that cared so much for him/her! So many domestic animals are not so fortunate. I am glad you all had so many wonderful years together. I bet you have some hilarious stories...pets are so funny. I wish that your heart be lifted by some special memories. Take care.

I started off college there - and, yes the tuition was high- even way back then! Beautiful campus. I went there cause I was pre-med when I started college and they had one of the best medical school acceptance rates. Came back home when I decided that I wasn't going to be a doctor and therefore didn't need to be spending that kind of money in tuition to be a nurse.

Wow, I did my undergrad here too. Started in Fall 1985 and graduated in December 1988 (did the 3 1/2 year plan...wow, was that hard!). When were you here?

I taught with a guy (at Rolla HS) when we lived in Rolla that I think played baseball at Wash. U. He was injured and decided to teach math and coach. We only lived in Rolla about 10 months.

Rolla is only about 1 1/2 hours from St. Louis. Jodie Pillow's kids and my DS attend a summer camp near there called Cub Creek Science Camp. Rolla is home to the Missouri University of Science and Technology -- formerly U of MO, Rolla (and before that Rolla School of Mines) -- it's one of the better engineering schools in the country (particularly in aerospace engineering).

Wow, it is a small world!

We had students that could take classes at UMR (I know, I am still old school. The name changed when we were there or right after we left.). We shopped a lot in St. Louis because Rolla was equidistant between Rolla and Springfield. We didn't really like the Springfield mall. I will tell you this, but I bet you already know it. DS 5 had to go to the St. Louis Children's Hospital for a specialist. I was so impressed. I would definitely go there for any needs like that again if we still lived there.

Interesting side note...I was also accepted pre-med to wash U, but went to UVA instead and wound up in law school...but as the line from Animal House went..."pre-med or pre-law, what's the difference"?

Chuck:cool1:

But I also would have graduated before you arrived Karen (1979-1983)

We are planning to go to Magens Bay when we dock in St Thomas - on our own - not as an excursion - questions . . .

1. Can you rent towels there, or do we need to bring our own. If we need our own, can we bring the ship's towels. I don't want the hassle of packing beach towels from home.

2. Can you rent life jackets at Magen's Bay for the kids to use while snorkeling?

Thanks!

Jodie

Karen,
My neice is applying to Wash U trying to get into the physical therapy school. I grew up across the river in Highland, IL. My family still all lives there. I am the only one who flew the coupe! Now I live in sunny Florida!
:cool2:

Moving with a 10 day old -- what were you thinking!

Then again, we moved away from Columbia when DS9 was 2 and that was bad too. DH would come home from work and ask why I hadn't packed anything. My response was "you pack with a 2 yr old - for every 2 things I would put in a box, he would take out 5."

We moved into our current house a few weeks before Mason was born. The house was being built as my tummy grew!! :thumbsup2 We have pictures...

It was the perfect time to move. I didn't have to lift a thing!:woohoo: However, I was only out of work for 7 weeks after Mason was born. I thought that would be enough time to unpack everything. It didn't turn out that way...We still have things that we didn't unpack. And, Mason will be 10 in a few weeks!! :scared1:

They have a good PT school. From what I hear it's very competitive to get in. In general most all of the schools at WashU are competitive (except for Architecture I think). I know exactly where Highland is! Can't say that I blame you for moving to FL -- I know Steve and I have considered it many times but our entire family (his and mine) is here and I don't think we'd want a house with that many guest rooms !

Eeyoremommy, I know exactly what you mean about St. Louis Children's Hospital. It is a very, very good hospital. Andrew was there in May for a really bad skin infection -- he was on IV antibiotics. The nurses and docs there were terrific and the facility was great too -- we had a really good view of Forest Park (which is kinda like our Central Park but better!).

It's strange. I did my undergrad at WashU (started pre-med too...and wound up in politics) and now I work in the law school (thought about going to law school but decided I didn't want the loans and that I'd likely practice at a legal aid or someplace where the pay is horrible) and now I'm getting ready to leave again. I'm happy to be going -- but it's still odd.

That's OK - I just unpacked some wedding presents and we celebrated our 20th anniversary in March. :rotfl: I kept waiting to have a china cabinet and wouldn't ditch the stuff. We bought a dining room set in February.

2397 -- My tip is to bring 2 swimsuits! I don't know about you but I HATE putting on a wet suit!

2398 -- Another tip...take a picture of a business card or return address label. That way if someone (nice) finds your camera, you may at least get your memory card back!

2399 -- Have your kids write a little about their day each night of the trip. It makes creating your scrapbook much easier and helps you remember those funny moments!

2400 -- My last tip for the night -- baby powder makes it much easier to get sand off!!!!!
