Turkey Day Gang 2009

Hi guys,

We may be switching to another week :sad2:. Steve changed jobs in January (after 20 years) and has a huge audit of the process safety management systems of the plant that has just become his primary responsibility. This combined with the fact that he is "low man" means that he may not be able to get Thanksgiving week off. We'll know more in a few weeks, but I thought I should let everyone know ASAP since I volunteered to coordinate shirts and am now concerned that I won't be able to do so.

More later,

Karen

Karen-

We hope that ya'all will be able to cruise with us and that everything goes well with Steve's new job!! :wizard: :thumbsup2 3 years ago I started a new job after being with the same firm for 16 years....I know how difficult that transition can be!! We wish you and your family the best!! :thumbsup2 :wizard:

Karen,

I'm sorry if we don't get the chance to meet you. I know what it's like to be low in seniority for vacations cause that's how it was at the last hospital I worked at. I remember saying that I wouldn't be able to get a summer vacation until my kids were in high school. Does Steve like his new job?

Oh no! I was so looking forward to meeting a fellow disboard rebel!!

We leave on June 12th for the Cub Creek camp. We're spending the night of the 13th in St. Louis. Is your son going this year?

Jodie

Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts. We have our fingers (and toes) crossed that it will work out. The upside is that if it doesn't, we'll likely get 2 weeks later in December since he has 3 weeks that must be used by 12/31!

Hi guys,

I have a hold on this cruise until I make up my mind. I have until the 25th. We are crusing the Magic on Oct 17th and I wanted to go away for Thanksgiving too if possible! I was looking around the Disney website and they showed cat 12 gty's available. I am not sure how I would like the 12's and especially since our 2 rooms could be anywhere on the ship seperated I am just not sure. We are sailing 2 cat 9's in Oct so we can't afford anymore then 12's a month later. I know I just will want to be on the ship.

I am trying to see if I got a good rate with the 12's so if you want to share what you paid for this week I would appreciate it!!

I have 2 rooms

1A, 1C 2869.16
1A, 2C 3908.47

total is 6777.00

We are booked for a cat 12 for 2 adults, a 14 yr old, and a 9 yr old. Our cost was about $4200. We had looked at switching to the Oct 17th cruise but then DD told she was expecting her 2nd child on October 20.

Karen, I am so sorry to hear that has happened to your husband, but happy at the same time that he has secured a job. In this economy, it can be a very long time until you find a job. Personally, if it was between keeping a job or going on ANY cruise...I would pick my job. I am with the others in hoping that his job will allow you, him and anyone else going with you to still come with us. As you put it, he is the 'low man' and you have to put in your 'dues'. I, too, was wanting to meet you.

Just a thought - you might want to check with Dreams Unlimited. Since we're relatively close to cruise time and rates are higher now than they originally were, I'm betting that Dreams has rooms available at the lower rate. Plus, you'll get their stateroom credit.

Or you could chance it and rebook onboard in October utilizing the 10% rebooking discount. Prices may go up by that point though, eliminating the 10% discount. OR, the cruise could be full - definitely a gamble to wait.

Good luck!

Jodie

Hey all,

Sounds like there's been lots going on. I missed about 5 pages. I'm just checking in after a couple weeks. I too just got a new job that starts next Tuesday. I got laid off in November, (the day after thanksgiving), after 16.5 yrs with the same company so I'm very, very excited. When I interviewed at the new co. I told them we had this cruise booked and I really hoped to go and they said 'no problem' since their busy time is September. I can't tell you how happy I am about that. Dh and I kept saying we'd wait until August to see if we had to cancel, but we don't!:woohoo:

I got my bracelet order from woodworknick today in royal blue. The youth and adult are slightly different, but only if you see them right next to each other. I don't think anyone will notice. They also sent me a white one with the blue showing through, (that someone mentioned), as a freebie, and honestly I like it better, but it doesn't come in youth and we have our whole groups order in the blue and we're going to stick with that.

Since I have the job, I went ahead and I got our auto train tickets to Fl. and I now have them in hand. We'll be arriving in Sanford the morning of the cruise and driving to port directly. After the cruise I hope to be going to swim with the dolphins at discovery cove on saturday when we disembark, but I haven't booked that yet. We don't get back on the return train to Lorton VA until Sunday afternoon.

And I read the comments about the colts. We're not fans, but since we live near baltimore the joke was "What's blue and white and moves at night?"

At any rate I'm very happy to be a confirmed turkey right now!

Hi all!

Just wanted to check in since it's been a while. Hope everyone had a relaxing weekend as we remember our Vets and Military.

I got my FE last week! I LOVE it! I ordered off eBay (not the one from the blog) and am THRILLED!! :cloud9:

Know what else I just realized? We're less than 6 months from sail date!! Woohoo!! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :goodvibes In our case, I know the summer will go by fast -- we've got multiple road trips (graduations, wedding, vacation) and DD10's swim team keeps us busy with practices and meets. So, really, the cruise will be here before we know it! ;)

Karen, I hope you're able to stick with us. Keep us posted. Had we decided what we're doing with shirts? Or is it just bracelets?? I need to order those...

Dustermom, good luck with the new job!

Have a good week, everyone!

So I went to go order my bracelets... but not sure what to engrave! What did everyone else put on their bracelets?

TIA!

Hi Charlie and all!

Actually Steve changing jobs was a really good thing! Steve needed a change for quite a while...and Andrew and I needed him to get off the "75 - 90% travel the world routine" that had been part of our lives for the last 12+ years. His new jobs keeps him in St. Louis with little to no travel (a dream come true for us!). As with any job change he's still trying to figure out the politics and locate the restrooms, but so far he's doing well.

In this day where so many are losing their jobs, Steve and I both feel very fortunate as we both seem to be in secure industries that are growing. Please don't think we're complaining...we'd rather have secure jobs than take a cruise...but we're still disappointed that we may have to postpone this one as we all have been looking forward to it for 2 years...ah well....a gal can still hold out hope :thumbsup2!

More soon and take care everybody!

Karen

Karen, I know other people who have to travel a lot for their jobs and you are so right, it is hard on the families. That is so awesome that things are better for your family,

I hope that everyone had as great of a holiday weekend as I did. Thankfully, in a way, the full week of endless rain is over for us here in north central Florida. Unfortunately, people on the east coast of the state are still flooded.

Charlie

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend! We had fantastic weather here and spent the majority of it outside!

Bracelets-we printed "Turkey Day Gang 2009" on ours, with ocean waves and Mickey heads on either side. We had our daughters' names printed on the inside of theirs (to avoid the arguments later!)

It's my daughter's b-day today-number 9!! Can't believe it. We're off this afternoon to buy her 2 parakeets...we must be crazy.

Have a good day!

Karen,
I hope things work out for you. You have been a warm and welcoming figure on this board.

As to the shirts. Have you considered using CafePress.com? They have a new feature now for groups. It looks like you can set up a group, upload the graphic and we can order what we want directly.

We had a lovely weekend visiting family, DB, DSIL, DGM, DGD and DNeice. The week is turning out ok too.

Thanks for the compliment Patsy! All I can say is that I've attempted to carry on the tradition from the 2007 Turkey's who graciously welcomed my family (and answered all my silly questions)!

Hope the weather has improved for everyone. It rained here for 5 straight days -- I thought we were going to have to build an Ark if it kept up -- but then yesterday (though the day started cloudy) it was sunny and beautiful by 10 a.m. (so much so that Andrew and I went with friends to Six Flags and had a great time)! Unfortunately, today it is raining yet again!

Well, that's it for me. I'm off to shop for a lovely dinner for Steve. Andrew and my parents took off for their lake house and (since next week is our 20th anniversary) I'm going to go all out and really cook for Steve!

More later,

Karen
