Turkey buying

We used to buy a turkey breast during the course of the year, but our grocery store rarely has them anymore. I'm talking about the bone in breast. They do still carry the boneless fillets. Butcher says the boneless turkey roasts aren't popular enough for them to carry regularly.
I used to get ours at Albertson's. But the last couple of years they've only had the boneless roast breast. I found them (bone-in) at Stater Bros this year.

Growing up with a huge extended family we always looked for the biggest turkey that we could find. I still remember my mother being furious with my father for bringing home a small only 20 lb. turkey. Now I am looking for something in the 12-14 lb. range. My DH and I only like the dark meat so we would gladly buy dark only if that was an option.

The kosher turkey breasts I get at Trader Joes are half-breasts, usually with the keel bone. I've no idea what happens to the half without the keel, perhaps they wind up in the ground white turkey.

I haven't looked for them recently, as I consider them a winter item. I wouldn't want to run the oven in the summer, and it's only been the last few days that have been cold enough to make me think about it. I'd be extremely disappointed if they stopped carrying them.

Perhaps it would help to ask the butcher if they might be considered seasonal? It might also help to live in an area with lots of empty-nesters.

I hadn't purchased ours, but quite unexpectedly, DH came home yesterday with one he got from his (temporary) seasonal job. He'd worked there exactly one day before getting the turkey. Woohoo! Nice gimme, especially given that it was a pretty high quality turkey and a very good size.

I'm pretty sure I've seen fresh turkey drumsticks and thighs available for sale. No need for a whole turkey if dark meat is what you like.

The few times I cooked for a larger crowd we had two turkey breasts, since most of my relatives like white meat only.

This is at the local chain. Corporate has made some big changes in the meat and produce departments this year that the local store employees don't control. They changed providers in the meat, poultry and seafood departments. Their new provider doesn't have the same variety that the old one did. No more turkey breasts, no more salmon roasts, and no more beef short ribs, and very limited cuts of steaks. They also have started offering their normal high quality produce, along with "blemished" produce at a lower price. They just got huge wage concessions from their union as they struggle to compete with Walmart. Walmart actually pays a higher starting wage now since the pay concessions were reached with the union. But some things just don't make sense. This chain OWNS their dairy, so no middleman, where as Walmart buys from a middleman, and yet their milk prices are still $1 a gallon more.

Local supermarkets have a sale price of .59/lb. I need to buy one by the end of the week, but have to make room in my freezer for it. Then switch to the refrigerator a few days out to thaw.

Like pp's, I used to get one from my employer every year, but I left that company a long time ago. Don't know if they still do it; that was a really nice gift that I always appreciated.

I think it is so stupid as most people do not spend that much money. I will reach the $400.00 mark this weekend I am giving it too my mom since she will never reach that limit. they need to lower the amount
Well, no. It's a promotional offer and the retailer can set whatever criteria it chooses.

I noticed yesterday a Food Lion by my house is selling turkey for 37 cents a pound with a $35 purchase.

DH gets one from work, not sure the size yet. We are sharing it with the in-laws, otherwise I'd probably just buy a smaller turkey or even just the breast somewhere.

59 cents a pound at Kroger with card and $10 purchase. I can't believe how many people don't eat dark meat. That's where the flavor is!
