Turkey buying

Trying a fresh turkey this year. No bargain, $5.99 a pound at Whole Foods. Also a challenge because DW wants a turkey that weighs less than 10 pounds. So we pre-ordered.

Nice. That is the perfect size.

I have not bought mine yet either OP and I am hosting.

I know there is so much to do with turkey after, but man we get sick of it after one leftover meal!
We use to do a big family gathering with 15 to 20 people, but now grandma has passes, and us cousins are all grown up.
If you have a fresh thyme market near you, they often run a good deal on Fresh Turkeys for people who are looking.

I've reserved one, but won't pick it up until the 24th when I'm ready to put it in brine.

Publix has turkeys on sale for 59 cents a pound. My dad went out last night and bought 4. We'll do 2 for Thanksgiving. I roast one and DH fries one. I average a full on turkey dinner about every other month throughout the year. It just gets more elaborate at Thanksgiving.

I pre-ordered a fresh one. We had a fresh one last year and loved it. It's not cheap at $3.50/pound. Smallest will typically be about 14 pounds.

I bought turkey for 8 bucks and was butterball turkey. I was not planning on getting a 10 pound turkey. The turkey will not be cooked until January.

With all the kids grown and out of the house we no longer have the big turkey/family get together.

The last few years we have had what DH calls "preemie" turkeys. We roast Cornish hens. Just enough for us, no leftovers to have to dread.

I just buy a turkey breast. Usually costs about the same, but absolutely no one in this family eats dark meat. And it cooks a bit faster (since it's smaller than a whole turkey).

same here. I usually buy a fresh one so I don't have to deal with the whole defrosting issue. Nobody likes the dark meat, and the breast cooks faster and is easier to deal with overall.

I bought mine at Target the other day. Paid $.99 a lb for a Butterball.

Bought my 22 pounder Wednesday at Meijer for 50 cents a pound. Hope I get a good price on a spiral ham I have to cook, too. (DIL allergic to turkey)

Ouch. I think the sign outside Trader Joe's said 2.99/lb for the Kosher ones, and only $2.49/lb for the brine-soaked ones, but I didn't pay much attention as I can't use anything larger than a turkey breast. (So don't quote me on those prices.)

Trader Joes just got fresh turkeys in...we will probably pick one up next week...How long does it hold in the fridge?

Just happened to see turkeys at Publix tonight. I usually get Butterball but they were $1.08 p lb and Publix brand was .58. I got a 14 lb Publix turkey. I might pick up another one for the freezer to cook later. Meat has gotten so expensive. .58 p lb is a bargain compared to chicken or beef.

No Turkey buying for us. I think it's been about 12 years since we've bought one. DH's company usually give him a fresh turkey - a 22 lb turkey usually costs over $150 - so NOT a cheap gift. They never confirm they're buying them until about a week before thanksgiving, which makes it a pain as I always sale watch and plan around the need to buy one. Not that it matters this year my mom and dad's good friend raised turkeys this year along with his chickens. He's giving them a 35 LB turkey. Not sure how we're going to cook a turkey that big never mind eat it all - there's only 9 of us for Thanksgiving this year.

DD doesn't eat turkey, so we usually eat something else. One year, it was roasted chicken- another year we did vegetarian lasagna. Since it is just the 3 of us (no relatives close and DH works retail, so we can't travel), we don't make big deal of Thanksgiving.

Several grocery stores around here are doing promotions where if you spend a certain amount each week for several weeks leading up to Thanksgiving week, you get a coupon for a free turkey (up to a certain size- I think 14 lbs).

We used to buy a turkey breast during the course of the year, but our grocery store rarely has them anymore. I'm talking about the bone in breast. They do still carry the boneless fillets. Butcher says the boneless turkey roasts aren't popular enough for them to carry regularly.

This is making me want the turkey now! You guys are getting some great deals!
