I would like to use TurboTax instead of going to our normal tax preparer this year. I'm nervous about it because our tax situation is a little more complicated this year. I'm no tax expert for sure!!! Please tell me your experience with TurboTax, good and bad!! Thanks!!!!

Ive been using Ttax since 1985. I like the program personally. But then I know more then the average person about taxes. It has good tutorial

You mention some complicated stuff "this year". Send a PM on the topic and I will see what I can share on how TTax can help. that way you dont tell the world your return

Just to add another opinion, I've been using TaxAct (online) for several years now, and my return is fairly complicated. With that said, prior to this, I used to do my own returns anyhow, and understand taxes reasonably well.

Most tax software has pretty good documentation to help you through things.

My taxes are not complicated but some of my family's are and we all use Turbotax.

There was one time a family friend said he couldn't use Turbotax because his taxes were too complicated. He was paying someone $400 to do his taxes so my mom took his information after he had already filed and did his taxes just to see how the numbers compared. She got the exact same number as the tax guy that charged $400. He has been using Turbotax ever since ;)

I tried it last year for the first time, and I'm HOOKED! I would consider my taxes "fairly" complicated, due to using 1040 long form, and writing off medical deductions from doing IVF (2 years in a row, so we'll have the same this go-round). That being said, I found Turbo Tax to be quite instructional and I think they cover everything very well. It is also easy to "toggle" from filing separate to filing together 'just to see' if there is a difference in your return.

my verdict: Go for it!

8 year user of Turbo Tax and I wouldn't change. Pretty simple now, but even when I had a rental property and stocks it was easy to use.

I use Turbotax. It prompts you on what to do and asks lots of questions. You could always buy it and prepare -but not file- your return and see if it works out the way you expect it to. If not, then use the accountant.

I've used TurboTax and TaxAct and have found TaxAct to be easier to use and generally a better program. Either way, unless you have extremely complicated tax forms to fill out I think it is worth it to do it yourself.

If you can read, have a reasonable grasp of the human language, and any amount of common sense, chances are you can use Turbo Tax just fine. It walks you through everything step by step very clearly. :)

I use turbo tax and ours is somewhat complicated. It is pretty good at walking you through everything but if you get stuck they can help you.

Much prefer TaxAct... TurboTax installs a bunch of extra crapware and is easily twice as expensive for no good reason.

I'm using Taxact for the 2nd year, usually we used H&R block but I've found taxact has more forms than H&R block does.

I agree. I have a similar situation with a family member. After seeing the results two years ago, he was hooked.

I have always done my own taxes (all the way back to when I was 18 and filing for the first time on a part-time job). Even though I could do it without any problem using pen and paper (and at no cost ;)) I prefer Turbo Tax by far.

I do make sure to shop around. There are several options for getting discounts. Fidelity has a good one - http://personal.fidelity.com/planning/tax/do_your_taxes.shtml (just click on Visitor Entry - don't have to be a customer). Capital One has a discount as well as some insurance companies.

We've been using the online TurboTax for YEARS - never had a problem and never paid for it. Very easy to use - takes you step by step.
