I have a few friends, American teachers, on the ground in Tunis. They have been "laying low" in their house for five days now. The situation has changed so quickly and they aren't sure what tomorrow will bring.

If you think of it, prayers and pixi dust for them.

I was listening to NPR describing the violence & listening to interviews. At least the leader of the country left. Not sure of all the details but it sounds awful.

I'm thinking about everyone there as well, reading all the articles I've found.
I went to Tunisia last March as part of a school trip, our guide while we were there is there and I've been reading all her updates on her facebook...it sounds pretty scary.

It's an interesting and scary situation. I read that many citizens are banding together to protect areas and one group even managed to subdue and capture some gunmen in a car. But random shootings and fires would terrify me! I feel for your friends.

"Why, yes! There are more people on the Earth than the Earth can reliably sustain, given today's technology." Very sad but not a big surprise. The over-population of the planet is one of the most suppressed crises.

Also, one that people can do little about. Population control is a noble cause but not likely to ever get off the ground.

I don't know if it's more than we fix do given today's technology. It's more than we can fix given the way we're organized. We are far from where we need to be, wasting resources and food and water constantly.

Yup, it'll be far easier to change our penchant for over-populating than to change the reality of X amount of farmable land.

Thank your your well wishes. The day light hours seem pretty "normal" but after it gets dark the helicopters come out and soldiers start patrolling the streets. That's when my friends get uneasy.
