Tsunami???

Has anyone else heard that a Tsunami is due to hit NZ, Figi, and Tonga within 30 minutes? (1PM EDST) I hope it's a mistake!

They are speaking about it on CNN. 7.8 magnitude earthquake, not the "monster" that caused the tsunami in 2004. (Quote from USGS person being interviewed)

I'm watching it on FoxNews. It says 30mns for Fiji and 90mns for New Zealand.

Why can't they get up in planes or helicopters over the ocean and look and see what's happening out there?

Fox is reporting also Hawaii (watch) within 90 minutes. It is not a definite, it is a possibility.

I guess we have to just wait and see.

I think I remember from the big one, that the problem is that you don't get a crest until the sea bottom starts to shallow. So, it's really hard to know how big it is going to be until it gets near land. It has to do with how the wave moves through the ocean.

I think. That's what I recall. Maybe if a Science Geek (oops, I mean person! I say Geek in the most loving of ways) is around they could explain it better.

How horrible!!!! Is it anywhere near Yapp? My husbands sister and family lives there. Her older children also live in Hawaii!!! Not sure if I need to call hubby at work yet or wait.

It looks like the epicenter might have been near Tonga - they are showing Tonga, with Fiji and Niue "nearby"

No earthquake was felt in NZ, and no evacuations according to an New Zealand journalist on the island that was just interviewed.

Hawaii is now under an advisory, no more watch cause the quake was a bit smaller than originally thought (7.8 instead of 8.2).

From CNN - all tsunami warnings have been cancelled.

Yep, I just heard that the watch has been canceled for the area. The Tsunami would have hit Fiji by now, and there was nothing that appeared. Sounds like the same thing is happening in NZ. Whew!
