I read somewhere (okay, it was Ridemax..) that there is sometimes a line forming for TSMM @ 9:30 just inside the gates of DCA. Then, at 10 when the park actually opens, a cast member walks the line back to the ride. Does anyone know if this is true or just something they've done in the past?

Yes, it is true. There are actually two lines. One from the main DCA entrance and one from the GCH. The line from the GCH is walked over first as that is a perk of staying onsite and then the other line. But if you are near the front of the line, you will not have long to wait at TSMM. I love the ride but this is the only way I will ride it since the lines are sooo long at all other times.

True! We were there last week. We got into DCA at about 9:40 and made our way towards the pier. Right about where Flik's Fun Faire entrance is, there is a rope. At 10am a little announcement comes on and asks everyone not to run, but that doesn't help! As soon as the rope dropped people started sprinting to get to TSMM! We just walked at a normal pace and ended up waiting about 30 minutes to get on the ride. I guess if you run you can get on it faster, but I don't recommend that!

...week and did rope drop in DCA 4 times. The only time they walked us back was on the weekends. The other days were literally rope drop.

We were able to ride all four times in the first ten minutes. We had a stroller so beating the crowds would have been impossible. So our two "tweens" would go and wait at the rope (well we all did but then I got left behind when the rope dropped)and then walked quickly (they did not run); to the ride we would join them in line. By the time I walked there with the stroller the line was typically well back of the lining queue that is part of the ride. This was the only time we would ride this as no one wanted to stand in line that long any other time.. they kids were much happier doing single rider lines on screamin' We needed to be at the rope by no later than 9:30 for this to happen though.

That explains why we were actually walked to TSMM - it was a weekend. All the other times it was rope drop and a free for all! Much prefer being walked over to TSMM!

After being there for many rope drops, I've never seen them walk us back. It's always been a straight up rope drop. HOWEVER, there are 2 rope drops. 1 by Grizzly River Run and 1 by A Bug's Land. In every single case, the 1 by GRR gets to the ride faster. And you do not have to be a GCH or onsite guest to be at that rope drop. Don't line up by A Bug's Land!

...two times we did the drop by Blue Sky Cellar/Grizzly waterfall
those were week days and the rope dropped.

the other two were back by Ariel's underwater and one was walked...
(weekedend) and as the previous poster stated you need not be a GCH guest (we were not) and the other was dropped.

There are 2 lines close to GGR. Guests of the DLR hotels are in the one closes to the GCH entrance and we were walked over first. They actually walked us passed the other GGR line that was close to the lift area. I don't know how they direct you in when you come in the main entrance - all I can say is what we experienced Sunday and the prior times.

I'd say it differently. Once in the gates you can go to either rope drop area. But the one on San Francisco St. is loaded with resort guests that could come in before the front gate guests.

Of course this is all likely to change in a few months. Little Mermaid will draw in it's own rush. It will be interesting to see what the morning equilibrium becomes.

I wouldn't call it a "line", I'd call it a mob! Yes, two rope drops and the bugs life is not where you want to be. In summer, by the time you get back to TSMM the line will be 40 minutes. We chose to ride the roller coaster over and over instead and try the Grizzly river rope drop instead. That worked better! And no, they didn't walk the line back. It's a mob scene!

I'm curious also how they will work the early entry once LM opens up. It could be a logistically nightmare!

These threads always fascinate me. As a So Cal local, I have NEVER been to Disneyland at rope drop and ride TSMM practically every visit.

We wait in line, but I have never waited more than 30 minutes, tops. The entire "rope drop cattle call" entertains me every time I read about it.

It's always interesting to hear other people's experiences compared with my own.

Dreams, unless you are standing at the rope and one of the first in the mob, it is hardly worth it. The line will be steady all day. Just grab a slushie and a snack and line up when it's convenient! I've learned the hard way.

Now with the Ariel ride opening, I'm sure we'll be standing in that mob more than once this summer. :)

That's EXACTLY what we do.

"Wanna ride TSMM?"
"How long's the wait?"
"I don't know. Let's grab a snack."
- get food, enjoy food and conversation while in line, ride -
:goodvibes

Totally with you on this.... Never fails to confuse me why you would go and wait at the rope drop for 30 minutes to be a part of the stampede to TSMM, to wait a further 10 or 15 minutes for a ride that is seldom over 45 minutes anyway...

We did it once and vowed never again....

You're fascinated to learn that people don't like to wait in long lines?

Ummm.... I don't believe that's anywhere close to what I said. If you would like to clarify what you are unclear about from my post I will be happy to further explain.

In reading your post, took it the same way as Love Tink....Especially the bolded parts:

Those of us who aren't locals might need to have a different approach to the parks. Not appreciating the gloating undertone :confused3

For TSMM, I try to get to DCA around 9:50 and head over to the GRR rope drop area (after getting Soarin and WoC FP). I wait 10 min there. The rope drops, and that rope gets to TSMM before the one at A Bug's Land. I run/walk quickly to TSMM. I wait 10-15 min there. I have waited 20-30 min total, which is lower than I've ever seen TSMM's line except for on the rainy day that I went and we went on 3 times in a row. :goodvibes

If I've already gotten a good head start on DL (gotten 1 or 2 FPs and done about 3-5 rides) before the 10AM DCA opening, I'd much rather wait for TSMM when the park isn't open (before rope drop), than during the day. But that's just my opinion. I have waited numerous times in the 45 min TSMM line.

I am as about as "unlocal" as you get coming from the other side of the world.... We had never ridden TSMM and so got to DCA early and waited at the rope drop for 30 minutes and walked briskly to TSMM...We found out later in our trip that the line was never more 45 minutes anyway so waiting 30 minutes at the rope drop and being part of the rush just wasn't worth it...Whether you are waiting at the rope drop or waiting at the line its still waiting... I don't think its gloating on the OPs part just questioning of the logic especially as you could spend that time in DL which is open at that time... After that first morning that's what we did...
