We just got to our vacation home and while unpacking found that TSA took our bag of spices! I carefully planned what meals we would make over the next month and brought them along, so I didn't have to buy a whole bottle of spice for the 2T or so that we would need. Now they're all gone!

Back home we have Sprouts markets which sell many spices in bulk, so you can buy just a scoopful of them. But there are no Sprouts in Florida. Any local residents know of a place to buy as little of a spice as you need?

I need basics like garlic, ginger, chili powder, dried onions, red pepper/cayenne, herbs.....those types of things.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

I'd just go to Walmart. Badia brand spices are pretty inexpensive there. If not, a store like Big Lots (or even CVS) usually has the spice island brand, big jars for 99 cents -- I wouldn't worry about buying tiny amounts if I could get them inexpensively like that. Take the extra home with you.

Thanks, but I really would prefer to buy just what I need. Those big jars are usually 4 to 8 oz each....multiply that by the number of spices I need and it wll be several pounds of leftover spices to carry home.....and with weight restrictions by the airlines, that's not practical.

There has to be somewhere that locals buy spices in bulk, so I'm hoping a local can answer for me. Someone on another forum suggested to see if there was a Whole Foods in the area (which there is), but I wasn't aware that Whole Foods sold spices this way (at least not the ones back home), only grains. Anyone in Orlando area know if they do?

Walmart or any basic grocery sells premeasured spice packs of individual spices as a recipe 'starters' right next to the other spices. McCormick brand often has small 1or 2 ounce jars of spices in the regular spice aisle. One could use what is needed and throw the unused away.

The Spice Island brands are in plastic containers and are very light weight.

My Whole Foods in Ct sells spices that way (used to be in the spice aisle now in the produce aisle). Call the Whole Foods and find out. Whenever I've dealt with the they've been super nice.

You don't mention where in Florida you are located. My suggestion is find a health food store. They usually have a bulk section where you can buy just a little bit of what you need. Much cheaper this way!

My Kroger has a lot of spices for $1. I'd buy those and then just chuck them when I leave (or leave in the home). No need to carry home.

This.. I would just run to Walmart or a local grocery store and buy the cheap brand of spices for around $1 and pitch what is left. Can't imagine you are going to be able to buy a smaller quantity much cheaper than that anyways.

THIS!!!!! if they are $1-just throw them out!!
Also-you can get frozen chopped onions in freezer instead of dried

Ditto. Badia spices are so cheap & the containers are plastic. Even if you bought 16 different spices, I'd be shocked if that added more than 2 pounds to your luggage, so not really a factor IMHO. And they are cheap enough that leaving them behind would not be tragic. I would not waste my time and energy trying to track down smaller quantities that are bound to be more expensive anyway. Most grocery stores have small spice envelopes too, so that might be an option.

What I want to know is, how do you know that TSA "stole" your spices? Seems kind of ridiculous to me.

ha I was thinking the same thing...I woudlnt' be surprised if you find your bag of spices on your kitchen counter when you get home...
but in all seriousness, buy the spices you need and leave them for the next person to come to the home.

If the spices were unlabelled and/or not in their original containers/loose in baggies I can see why they would have been confiscated (not stolen). It could have looked like drugs to a TSA worker.
That said, I would call Whole Foods, and if that doesn't work, get small containers of the spices at a discount store.

Garlic, ginger, chili powder, dried onions, red pepper/cayenne, herbs don't look anything like drugs. Even little baggies of herbs could only be confused with pot by someone who'd never seen actual marijuana. Fallen out while the bag was searched is possible, or left behind.

For the OP, Chamberlins at 1114 N. John Young Parkway in Kissimmee might have what you need. Their number is (407) 846-7454.

I have nothing to say about spices, but-

I'm sure that the TSA stole a waterproof iPhone/camera pouch from my luggage on our way to Orlando in August. I had specifically remembered packing it, as the cord was sticking out and I had to shove It back in so I could zip my suitcase. When we were getting ready to head to Typhoon Lagoon and I couldn't find it, I just figured I had taken it out to rearrange or something. I was sure I would find it on my bedroom floor when I got home. Nope. I have searched my bedroom, all closets, suitcases....nothing. :confused3

Seems like a weird thing to take, but perhaps it was cheap and small enough for someone not to make a fuss over? I mean I'm not going to call the airport/airline and fill out paperwork for a $12 pouch.

Anyway, I'm not so quick to poopoo someone claiming the TSA took something from their luggage...
