I have a knee support that has that squishy gel stuff surrounding the knee cap area. Does that need to be packed as checked luggage or can I have it with me going through security? (It might be useful while walking around an airport)

I would think it 'should' be okay. Just put it in the bin by itself, or with the 3-1-1 baggie. Don't try to wear it through security!!! That will get you stopped.

One can never know what to anticipate from Airport Security Screeners. But . . .

Travelers may call TSA Cares toll free at 1-855-787-2227 prior to traveling with questions about screening policies, procedures and what to expect at the security checkpoint. TSA Cares will serve as an additional, dedicated resource specifically for passengers with disabilities, medical conditions or other circumstances or their loved ones who want to prepare for the screening process prior to flying.

The hours of operation for the TSA Cares helpline are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. EST, excluding federal holidays. Travelers who are deaf or hard of hearing can use a relay service to contact TSA Cares or can e-mail TSA-ContactCenter@dhs.gov.

Assuming thse help line tells you it's OK to wear it (why have to carry a brace that is meant to be worn? :confused3 ) ask what to do if you get a different response from the Airport Securiity Screener.

ETA: Will you be on a flight originating from Canada? Do you know how CATSA will respond?

CATSA usually follows TSA's lead (sometimes too much ;) ) Not sure if we'll be flying from Toronto or Buffalo yet.
