and I keep getting routed to INDIA! I personally chose to do business in the US...don't want to support the policies of companys that send jobs outside the US and paying these folks a fraction of what a US employee would make!! MY CHOICE!! I am stuck in phone tree hell and with every new number still routed to India. If I'm going to pay US prices than I want my money staying in and supporting the US. My two cent rant for the day!

Sounds like you're a little too late with your not supporting outsourcers policy. No matter how hard you try, you're going to get your phone calls routed to India when you're calling Dell.

Does Gateway outsource to India also? I'd like to know that before I purchase a new PC.

Last time I called Gateway for tech help I got a college kid in South Dakota. But that was at least a year ago....my PC is great!

Unfortunately, this is happening a lot more than you think. DH is a computer programmer for a very large company that I bet a lot of people on these boards use every day. He will probably be losing his job within the next few months because they have decided to offshore all of their IT operations to India. It makes me sick just to think about it.

Last time we called Gateway tech support the person, the call did indeed go to India.

I realized the outsourcing to India by Dell after it was too late. I had already bought a pocket PC from them. While pricing and getting info I was transferred to India but once in awhile I spoke to other guys in the states. ALthough I love my Dell products I think I am going to get a Compaq as my next computer. Anyone know if they outsource to foreign countries?

Try MPC (formerly Micron). All located in the US.
We had a horrible time with Dell, so much in fact that we ended up returning the new computer we had purchased. We are quite happy with the MPC. We had a Micron for about 7 years and yes, it still works. The new MPC is terrific though. And........better yet, they stand behind their product......

A friend who is not very computer literate just spent a fortune at Gateway - I think they really oversold her. They also promised her that she could come in and they would provide education, help, etc. Guess what - they closed the store less than 2 weeks later. By the time her computer arrived the store was history.

I had to go over and hook everything up and am providing the computer education that they promised. I was never that impressed with them when they had the Gateway store open.

Computers have very much become a commodity. Pricing seems to be the main reason that people pick which computer to buy. Given that I can see why the manufacturers are trying to cut costs where possible.

The other side of this is that not only are these offshore workers cheaper but in many cases they have a stronger work ethic. Who hasn't gotten the US phone service person with the "whatever" attitude - even at our beloved WDW (though rare).

Of course none of that helps if you are the one losing your job.

I Know in the past half dozen years I have had Acer (Dominican Republic service techs), IBM (Phillipines service techs), and Dell (currently have 3 PC's, just got rid of a 4th, India and Texas service techs). All have been fine. A global society. Most recent service was on my laptop, a unit about 10 months old. About 2 weeks ago, I called regarding a noisey DVD drive, I had the guy listen to it on the phone (he was in India), I had FEDEX deliver a new one to my home approximately 20 hours later with a return, freight paid FEDEX to send back to wherever it was addressed. I swapped it out, dropped the old one in a FEDEX box and all was fine.

Compaq is now owned by HP, and I've had my Compaq for a while. It's crashed 3 times in the last six months, and when I tried to replace it with a HP last year, I had problems with the brand new out of the box computer. It wouldn't see the keyboard or the mouse, and when I called the sales department (because their tech support line was a toll call) they were nice enough to switch me to tech support.

Tech support tells me to register my computer on the website.

Me: I can't register my computer because the keyboard and mouse aren't recognized by the computer.

Tech: Well, we'll be able to help you as soon as you register your computer on the website.

HELLO!!!!!!!!

That sucker went back in the box and to the store for a full refund. I'm still looking for a computer to replace my Compaq. :(

Interestingly enough, I lost my job a couple of years ago due to outsourcing to India. I worked for a distance learning company called Emind.com for a couple of years. One of our selling points at that time was that the corporate client would get personal attention from their Implementation Specialist (me) and their customor service manager.

It was a great pitch because what company would offer that?

Well, after the first couple of years, they let go of all the Implementation Specialists and customer service reps and outsourced to India. All training and technical help was to be done by phone.

So there were quite a few people who were made jobless then. Aaaahhh, the American Way.

Wow, arminnie! Want to come visit me? :teeth: I have been living in laptop h-e-double toothpicks since I left FL. :earseek: I have NO CLUE how to hook up my desktop. And I managed to rip a wire when I disconnected everything there. You know that little electrical thing you plug everything into on the floor. Well, on the side there's what looks like a phone outlet in a wall. One says input and the other is output. Hmmm...there's a wire in input. Doesn't look like it comes out though. I accidentally ripped that one. :earseek: :faint: Wish I were a computer tech! LOL!

After Gateway closing their stores and outsourcing their customer service and the headaches I've had with them the last few weeks, I will never purchase a computer through them or Dell. I will go to the local man in my town that ended up straightening out my computer and let him build me one from scratch. At least if I have problems, I know I will be able to see someone in person that knows more about the computer than me.

Mish: We've had 2 Compaq's and have been happy with them. BUT, anytime I call, it is to India. Sorry.:(

Most call centers for PC companies are in India now. The large ones anyway. It is happening more by the day.
My Unix Admin job was lost to India. I won't name the company, but they are the largest phone compnay in the southeast. 2 weeks after I lost my job, they called to offer me long distance that I helped them get! I declined.

When I got my Dell last August, I was having problems with my wireless and the laptop. I called the Dell CS and was routed to the Phillipines. His accent was horrendous and almost unintelligible. You'd think they keep their support on US soil.

Help desk is something that takes little training and no face-to-face interaction. If you want to keep buying $600 computers you need to expect the companies to offshore the 1st-tier help desk jobs to people that will gladly accept 1/3 the pay.

Which Dell did you buy?

The XPS platform is supported here in the US.

As far as the bill paying, Im not sure where that is.

Nothing worse than getting customer service from someone you cannot understand. I always give them a chance. If I cannot get help or have to keep asking them to repeat the answer, I ask for someone that can speak a little clearer english.

It usually works out for me.

The last time I talked to a techie in India, he said his name was DeShon and he was located in San Diego. Funny how both he and his supervisor had strong Indian accents.
