Trying to decide on hotel

I'm wanting to plan an early May 2017 trip and I'm thinking I want to splurge one of the deluxe resorts. It's 2 adukys, 1 child who will be 9 at the time. Poly is probably my number 1 choice, but open to other suggestions. Also, trying to decide if I rent through DVC points or through disney.com.

You won't be able to book a room until you're 499 days out via Disney. A DVC rental is 11 months out, and nonrefundable. For a Poly rental, for May 2017, you are unlikely to be able to book any time prior to November 2016, as home resort owners at the Poly can book May 2017 starting in June 2016, but very few home owners are renting as yet. Other DVC owners cannot book Poly until 7 months out.

VGF may be hard to get as well unless you rent from an owner since it has so few rooms. Does it matter if you're near a specific park? You can probably save a little if you rent, but the trade off is no cancelations and usually non-refundable.

We have stayed with 3 at Poly in a regular room twice. The rooms and bathroom are big, so it was not a problem. Last time we stayed, DS was 8. I love Poly, but it has just gotten too expensive for me. We still visit every trip, because we love it so much. However, we found that we really enjoyed Port Orleans Riverside last time. If you are going to splurge, Poly is nice. When the monorail is operating, the transportation to MK and Epcot are great. You can walk to the TTC to catch the Epcot monorail directly. Buses to AK and DHS are really hit and miss. Contemporary seems to not have the same atmosphere to me, but you can walk to MK. Grand Floridian is beautiful, but it's expensive and the least convenient of the 3 monorail resorts. What exactly are you looking for in a resort, ie pool, food, club level, transportation?

I love POR. Can't see myself going to Disney and not staying there.
