I posted this message on the W.I.S.H board, but no one had any advice. Thought I would try here since my appointment is tomorrow.

I have a primary care physician appointment on Saturday to discuss getting my cholesterol checked again and I was thinking of asking my doctor to refer me to a nutritionist. I have high cholesterol, which I have brought below 200 but by LDL and HDL are still out of range. I also am glucose intolerant and have a spastic colon. This all means....low fat, low carb, no dairy and no artificial sweeteners. This doesn't leave me with much....atleast this is how I feel anymore. I don't like fish or seafood so that even narrows it even more.

My question is...Have you been to a nutrionist or dietician? If so did it help or make you more frustrated? It seems like everytime I go to the doctor I come out more frustrated than when I went in. Also, if you went was it for any of the reasons I stated above. I think the doctor will laugh because I have lost weight in the past 1 yr, but not as much as I could have because of frustrations I have.

I've been to a nutritionist and it was very helpful. It was for different reasons, but it helped to change my life.

I have never been to a dietician or nutritionist, but if I were you with your limited food choices, I would surely seek advice on recommended foods to help lower your chol. Also, I am sure you know this, but daily exercise really helps, too.

Good luck.

I exercise 5-8 times a week. Atleast 30 minutes each time, if not 1hr. It is a mix of cardio and weights. It is my frustration over food that I am hoping to work out with a nutritionist. I do concentrate more on the cholesterol than the glucose/dairy issue. I would love to know of other foods besides fish that could help with the LDL/HDL numbers. I need to find a way of eating that I can live with the rest of my life, I'm not even 30 yet. Currently I get frustrated after 2-3 weeks of watching everything, since no matter what I eat it falls into one of the categories I need to watch.

Sorry for the somewhat long post about this, but I am totally frustrated with this.

Hi, I have been to several dieticians over the years to help with my diabetes. Most of them are the brightest, kindest people you could ever meet.

If your medical insurance will cover it, I suggest having your doc write presciption for a series of visits with a Licensed Dietician.
Most medical groups have one on service. This person will be able to help you in many ways. They will give you menus, recipes, e*ercise clues and ways to help you Keep on task with your specific needs. Everyones body adjusts differently to different diets and e*ercise. The trick is to find out what works for you.
Everyone is ready to hand out advice.. especially those at stores like GNC. This may not be the best route for you at this time. It sounds like you would do best with a Clinical Dietician.

I miss being able to do a stairclimber and aerobics.. Those two things went a long way in helping to control my glucose and cholesterol. I have had to adjust my diet and medication to make up for the missing e*ercise.

Good luck with this. My husband's nutritionist was less than helpful after his heart attack. I hope you find one of the good ones.
