Today I did a trial run on the equate version of Less Drowsy dramamine before our trip in 10 days. I guess my plan was to spin around in the backyard - I didn't think that part through. Well the result was that I got so tired I SLEPT FOR 3 HOURS this afternoon. So my question - has anyone tried any other motion sickness methods that are NON drowsy and really work. We are going to Universal and it is a must for me I think. Appreciate the responses.

Not sure about using it for theme park rides, but when we cruise we take Bonine at night starting the night before our cruise. We've never had any issues with drowsiness or motion sickness even with really rough seas.

On our last cruise my husband used Ginger tablets and said that and the wrist bands worked well.

I think the ingredients of Less Drowsy Dramamine are the same as Bonine.

When I take Bonine I take it at bedtime.

I agree. I think if the OP takes a look at the active ingredients listed on the package, it will be Meclizine. The same active ingredient in Bonine. I also take it at night, starting the night before I'm going to need the motion sickness protection.

I find the first day I take meclizine (bonine or non drowsy Dramamine) I am more tired the first day but taking it at night helps. Usually by the 2nd night I don't have the same drowsiness effect. I also do better if I have it in my system for a few days then when I take it for the first time when I already need it.

Bonine is 25 mg meclizine. Also sold as "Dramamine Less Drowsy" (formely Dramamine 2) and "Antivert" as well as other brands and of course generics. It's not a antihistamine like original Dramamine (dimenhydrinate), but some people feel drowsy from taking it.

Pepto Bismol (or one of its generics) is supposedly anti-nausea, but it's not specifically marketed for motion sickness.

Isn't meclizine a controlled substance in the US? I took it for vertigo one time (boy, that was fun, lol).

Have you tried asking your Dr for Zofran? I always keep some on hand for car sickness and the nausea I get from my migraines. I have a psuedotumor cerebri, a fancy name for increased cranial pressure leading to intensely painful headaches that occur while you sleep. And I get daytime migraines as well. My insurance covers it, and it takes any nausea away completely with few side effects. It is non-drowsy.

You need a prescription to buy Meclizine HCl but can buy Bonine over-the-counter. It's the same medication in the same dosage so actually it's kind-of silly, but it is what it is. The Bonine is chewable and costs about $5 for 16 pills. The last time I had a script for Meclizine, which need to be swallowed with water, it was a $5 co-pay for about 50 pills. Unfortunately by the time I find the time and cash for the copay to the doctor's office to get the prescription written, it's just as easy to buy the Bonine!

You can get generic on Amazon really cheap. I stock up because all of my kids get motion sick.

I use Bonine when I cruise. I start taking it two nights before the cruise begins. No drowsiness and it works like a charm.

I'll repeat what a lot of people have already said. We cruise often and I have found Bonine to work wonders for me. I also start taking it 2 nights before we set sail and then one a night for the duration of our trip. Haven't had any problems.

Just wanted to clarify that meclizine is actually an antihistamine, but it has a less of a drowsy effect than most antihistamines.

I am interested in this...
Is the recommended dosage of the Bonine ONE tablet or TWO tablets.
And, while it was mentioned that the Rx version comes in chewable, I am wondering if it is okay to cut the tablets in half.

I seem to be really sensitive to things... for example, one can, if they wish, take two pseudoephedrine, but I take only a half of one at a time.

OMG, I think i wold be comatose if I took two of the Advil with pseudoephredine! :faint:

Most people would start with the lower dose and increase to the higher dose as necessary. Individual responses to any medication can vary, but generally, the heavier the person, the higher the dose needed. If you are splitting the smallest recommended dose, you probably aren't going to get enough for it to be effective.

OTC instructions say one or two 25 mg tablets - once daily. A doctor may have a different recommendation. The tablets aren't time-released or anything.

It was also mentioned that it might take a few uses before your body adapts to the medication. A lot of antihistamines are like that. I take diphenhydramine for my allergies and a runny nose. It's still plenty effective for the symptoms, but the drowsiness goes into effect a lot later than it used to. Of course now that means it's less effective for me as a sleep aid.

The Bonine I buy OTC is chewable and it is one tiny tablet.
