"Tron: Legacy" May Fall Short at Box Office

Yeah,
I think Tron will do better than that. If Alice in Wonder Land could do a billion I think this will be up there as well. We're overdo for a good Sci-Fi.

Well whatever the weekend number turns out to be, the dollars I spend will be a component of it. I'm looking forward to this movie!

of course, your comment presupposes this movie will actually be good

I said months ago that this would be a failure...

I also believe i was accused at the time of being clueless.

Guess i won't be alone there.

It will most likely do a good initial haul then fade ridiculously quickly. my guess is that it will end its first run in early feb and gross somewhere in the mid 100 million range domestically....which is not very impressive with the inflated prices and costs.

but i'm content to see how well it plays this time...as the original went from "flop" to "cult" to "visionary" in the span of 30 years.

I have to agree. Marketing has been pretty underwhelming on this one, I won't be surprised to see it flop.

LOL, what does "good" matter? Alice definitely wasn't good. Wasn't a poke in the eye either but it still did a billion.

Yeah, I am a little worried about the lack of marketing on this one. I was in DL not to long ago and the only Tron sougveneir I could fine was a childs Tshirt.

Lack of marketing?? I'm seeing it advertised everywhere I look! Trailers during shows on Discovery, TRONorail, elecTRONica at DCA, the new Tron: evolution video game, Iphone app, Posters for the soundtrack, Facebook activities, Daft Punk heavily promoted....I've seen more marketing for this movie than any in recent memory from Disney, honestly

I don't have Discovery.
I didn't see a Tronorail at DL.
I don't know what elecTronica is but I'm not going to set foot in DCA till the construction is done. It's a crappy enough park without being all torn up on top of it (and no fancy dancy water show is going to change my mind about that).
I don't think I've ever bought any games based off a movie especially before it was released.
Iphones suck.
Only posters I've seen are in the movie theaters.
Facebook is lame.
WTH is Daft Punk?
All I know is that I saw a lot more "Alice" advertising than this movie. I don't think I've seen one comercial for Tron on TV (just the previews at the theaters).

How did the original Tron do? Oh yeah, Disney's biggest embarassment ever. This couldn't be a good building block, could it?

BTW, I liked Alice. Not great but I don't do drugs and i'll bet it was GREAT on drugs.

I can't think of a movie that I want to see LESS. I'd take a chick flick with the wife any day over this.

So you aren't their target market then

I have also seen marketing everywhere for Tron. I want to see it and thought the trailer looked cool, but then I was a fan of the original. I think the big problem here is trying to franchise a 28 year old film that is by no means a film in the larger film-going consciousness. This isn't Indiana Jones or Star Wars or Star Trek.... The original only did $33 million domestic off a $17 million budget which is successful but not major successful.

Personally I think the reason that the attempt is being made is that it was a big influence on several players at Disney including Lasseter.

Either way, I want to see it... but I think it was a MAJOR gamble by Disney and if it isn't successful will be devastating both in its failure and in Disney being gun shy about green lighting "risky" films... much like the late 70's and early 80's when Disney passed on Films like ET and Star Wars.

LOL, yet I'm going to go see it and am seeking out Tron based souvenirs before the movie even comes out.
Maybe that's why the first Tron didn't do well? They didn't have Facebook or Iphone sheep to go see the movie.

Wow... what an inane and ridiculous comment.

So many things wrong here not exactly sure where to start....

Perhaps, but it's definitely in competition for that award with another Disney attempt at Sci-fi: their infamous 1979 production of "The Black Hole." At least that disaster lived up to its name...in terms of its use of the Disney film studio budget.

I know it's just anecdotal evidence, but the vast majority of my friends husbands (who are techy people, work at Microsoft, Google etc) are totally geeking out over the movie. So, I think the male 18-35 demo will be well served. I don't know how many wives will be joining, but I do not think it will be a flop.
