Trolls and the demise of the debate board

I, for one, am glad to have read this thread! Someone called me a troll on a thread I started and I asked what that meant, but no one gave me an answer! I guess that person was calling me a troublemaker?
As someone who happily discovered these forums after several trips to WDW (and who mistakenly thought she knew it all! ) I lurked for awhile, posted specific questions for awhile, and then finally felt comfortable posting more and more. I know I haven't posted nearly as many times as all of you...but I hope you don't think I am a troll because of that.
Now I feel more like a threadkiller (love that term...I am learning something new everyday!) than a troll! lol

I have belonged to the Diz for quite awhile and often lurk, and do not post. Recently started to post more often, I don't think this should be labeled a troll or anything else. I thought these boards were for anyone and evryone who loves disney and to be used in that manner. The reason I started coming to the community board was to try and save money when going to Disney. I would hope people are more open minded than just looking at how many posts someone has before they feel that person has a right to be on the boards and post. Sorry but just had to post my feelings after reading these posts.

Short -- well, somewhat. Green -- only after eating fried eggplant or brussel sprouts! Pointy eared -- I did have those surgically altered.

Speaking for myself (and only myself), I don't care whether a person has 2 posts or 2000.

If they say something worthwhile, it doesn't matter.
If they say something inane, it doesn't matter.
If they say something goofy, it doesn't matter.

Look at what they say.

As long as we have at least two people in the world, you will always have a debate board. Unless we get down to one, then its just paranoia. But at least you might win every debate. Unless you agree with yourself, but not all the time, but you could change your mind or his or yours.

Appropriate acronym.

I also tend to agree that the post count shouldn't matter. It's what the person is saying that's important. A troll can have 10,000 posts, doesn't make him less of a troll.

I lurked on the DIS for a full year, mostly on the DB, before jumping in. And I think I jumped in pretty quickly once I finally registered! I would say my first 1000 posts were on the DB, then I started branching out to the CB and occasionally the other boards when needed. So I don't think someone who starts out controversial is a troll at all!

There have been several bannings in the last few weeks. I have a feeling many of the strongly opinionated new posters are regulars who were banned.

There are a couple of people missing lately who's views I always liked reading. I'm too scared to ask if they've been banned!

I am glad to see Eeyore1954 though...I must have just missed seeing your posts for a while and I was worried you were among those who must not be named!

A troll is a trouble maker specifically trying to stir up trouble on an IBB and I haven't seen any around in awhile, but I don't venture over to the trip planning boards often, except to the Budget Board. From what I've observed on the DIS, most people start on the trip planning boards, either planning a trip or helping others, then branch out onto the other boards til they settle in a place they like. I imagine that's why so many people have low post counts on the trip planning boards. It has nothing to do with the DB being closed. And ... this time of year people are either coming back from a trip or leaving soon, so that's why there always seems to be more new members in the summer months.

Believe me ... ask any of the DB people. If they have something to say, they don't need to change their indentities and troll around to say it, they just say it.

There are some who would add me to the list of "Those who must not be named, quoted or addressed on the DIS"! But I figure I have some good company in that group.

I was out of town on an extended biz trip with no access to the DIS. Talk about DIS withdrawal! I was in a major blue funk after the first couple of days. Insomnia ... muscle cramps ... blurry vision... vertigo -- well, it was either too much seafood (I was in Seattle) or DIS withdrawal. Still not sure which!!

I am missing people too lately! I don't even want to name names, because I don't want to know!

Some low post counts are due to technical issues not banning...just for the record!

Not everyone with a low post count relaly has a low post count. I lost a few thousand posts when the board had technical problems awhile back and I was never one to be able to post 5000 messages in a six month period.

I don't know what types of posts were typical of the debate board since I had never been on it. I am, however, familiar with trolls. Here is a good explanation of exactly what a troll is:

A troll isn't necessarily someone new or opinionated or anything like that. It's someone who intentionally posts rude or nasty messages that really don't contribute much to the discussion for the purpose of getting people riled up. Which I feel is different than someone with opinions that differ from mine who is very forceful in trying to get them across.
