Tripod as carryon?

I went to the TSA website. I cannot find where you are not allowed to carry on tripods. That said, I seem to remember here people talking about having to check them. Is it based on airline? If so, we'll be flying Southwest. I'd prefer to keep it with me (for obvious reasons).

Can anyone help?

TIA :goodvibes

From everything I have read, you have to check them. I started a thread about this a while back and the majority of responses (if not all) said they had to be checked. It probably really depends on the TSA agent you get.

That being said---I wish you could carry them on. We are going to WDW for a weekend trip in October and everything else we could fit in a carry-on, but because of my stinkin tripod I think we'll have to check a bag. Not a huge inconvenience, but not ideal either. :)

I've asked a few TSA agents at different airports and never got the same answer. The majority answer was yes. The TSA website refers to a clublike object?

It would not hurt to call the 2 airports directly and ask them how they handle tripods in carry on luggage.

It's totally up to the TSA agent who screens you. I have carried mine on twice this year (flying out of the same airport) and had no problems whatsoever (I also carry mine in a tripod bag).

Technically, I don't think you're supposed to carry one on board. Even though it's not specifically prohibited on the TSA website (or wasn't the last time I checked), a tripod does meet the criteria for some other things that are specifically prohibited (like "tools longer than 7 inches" or something like that). However if you're also carrying on camera gear, they may be more inclined to let you though than if you were just carrying a tripod with no camera gear.

This is a tricky one that unfortunately is left up to the discretion of the TSA agent. So pick the nicest looking one and go for his or her screening line :thumbsup2.

We just returned from disney and I had a tripod in my backpack, it was in a travel bag and it was not a problem. I purchased my tripod right before we left and made sure that it fit into the backpack, it folds up to 13 inches or so.

I had the same question before our trip (somehow, I forgot whether I had carried it on in the past...I think I always have) and some online searching revealed that about 85% of the time, it's no problem.

I carried mine on inside a bag without incident.

I had a carbon fiber monopod in my camera backpack and they didn't say a word in Ft Myers or Richmond two months ago

Thanks for all the replies. DH has decided we will just put it in the bag inside of the suitcase. I will be removing the ball head, that's about all I can do. It's pretty good sized (at least, not a travel one). I will be keeping my camera gear with me. That won't leave my sight, not for a second!

I will be flying from Nashville to Jacksonville FL, driving to Ocean City, NJ, so flying out of Philly back to Nashville. I'd hate to check the bag curbside to find out I couldn't take it onto the plane -- I'd be pretty !

Hoping to get some great photos of the boarwalk in NJ (at least, maybe capture something that Ann hasn't already ;)).

That shouldn't be too hard at all. Even though we are in OC probably once a month, I have yet to take my camera out to the Boardwalk. All of our time is spent at the in-law's house "visiting"---no real time for photography when we go down there. I told DH that sometime before it gets too cold, we'll have to leave for OC earlier than normal so I can get an hour or so of shooting time. We'll see about that. :rolleyes1

Have a great (and safe) trip and maybe PM me with your cell phone if you feel comfortable doing that---that way if we end up being in OC this weekend I can give you a call and maybe we can meet up. I'm thinking we won't be there since we already were this month but ya never know!

Can't wait to see some shots from your trip!

It's going to be a crazy few days!

I'll send you a PM with my number. Saturday will be the only day that we would be able to see you, if you were in the area. Friday will wrap up our 16+ hour drive, we'll be too tired. Sunday we have to leave around 10:30 a.m., or so, to head to Philly to catch our flight.

I have 8 gigs of open memory on my cards. Going to give shooting exclusively in RAW a shot. Cross your fingers........could be lots of questions for everyone when I come back ;)
