This was truely a trail race! A very rainy, muddy and cold 26.2 miles. But I did it.
The day started out in the hi 40s/low 50s and it was raining. But that did not stop us
people who wanted to brave the trails.
The 1st 2 miles were on the road and felt really good. We ran this in 18 minutes flat and I thought..WOW this is cool!
Then we started up the 1st trail. I never looked up from this point on. We passed several runners early on. THis was not easy because the trails were only wide enough for single runners.
We jumped over roots, slid down (unrunnable) hills, climbed over trees, and truged (sp?) through streams.
And then it got worse!
WHAT? YOU WANT ME TO GO DOWN THERE? Me at 12 miles getting ready to go into the hardest part of the marathon. I felt GREAT here and was doing around a 10MPM.
We ran on. There were times we could not run because of the mud, so my time went btwn 11 - 15 MPM! YES IT WAS THAT HARD!
The picture does not do the trail justice. This is mile 18!
The guy that I was running with was sick with a cold, still we ran! I have to say I was a little worried about him. We stopped at the 19 mile food/H2O stop and I took my 2nd GU...Uck! Drank some water and gatoraid...We stayed here for about 5 stinking min, but those pretzels (sp?) and defizzed coke was so good!
At this point, it was pouring the rain and we were getting wet. I think it was getting even colder outside b/c I was sweating and shivering at the same time.
At mile 22 the guy I ran with stopped for an "health" break. I had to go too, but knew at this point I could not squat!
So I ran for the finish line!
Yes it was up a hill! But I RAN.....In fact, I did the last 2 miles in 18 min (just like the 1st 2 miles).....
I was yelling DID I WIN???DID I WIN???? .
Well my time was right at 5 hours. I was hoping to do better, but with this being my 1st trail race I will take it. I did finish like 45th out of the race and 6th in my age group (there were only 9
)
And I got a nifty glass to drink out of and remember the good times!
Oh...And I didn't fall even once!
