Triple DVC stay review: Kidani, BWV & Poly

Hey all,
I just got back from an 8 night stay during which I stayed at 3 resorts. Originally I was just going to do a split stay between BWV and Poly but when I added an extra night could only get Kidani for it and so it was... lots of moving.

This is the first time I have been to Kidani - I have stayed in Jambo before, both regular and concierge... and I will say that I MUCH prefer Jambo to Kidani. I drove by the Jambo sign first and it was all nice and decorated for Christmas and I was kind of surprised and disappointed that the Kidani sign wasn't as well. Also since I did not do my research, I was surprised by the underground garage. It was not a huge deal, but it was just very disorienting when I was not expecting it! I didn't have a problem finding a spot near the Rafiki elevator but as it turned out the Rafiki elevator was about as far from my room in Rafiki as you could get (other end of the hall... we were super close to the lobby). I was also a little surprised that the Kidani lobby was smaller than I expected, but it was all fine for one night.

We had dinner at Sanaa that night and I found it kind of confusing to get from my room to Sanaa. I guess I am just not a huge fan of the layout of this resort. It wasn't a deal killer but I would probably choose to stay at Jambo if I had the choice again. That said, Sanaa is an amazing restaurant and we had a great server and enjoyed our meal very very much and it was nice to just go back to our room after... so for that reason I might stay at Kidani again in a similar situation.

The room was in fine shape, no complaints, and it was quiet. It did the trick for our first night there with planned morning EMH at AK the next morning.

Next we moved to BWV and although I requested a village green view, what I got was quite possibly the worst "preferred" view I've ever had. it was in an inside corner of a bump out and all we could see was a big piece of construction equipment (looked like some kind of cherry picker, probably for the painting) that was parked outside our window. it was on the second floor and I did appreciate not having to use the elevators and I think it was only about halfway down the long hall so the location was fine and we spent almost no time in the room except for sleeping. I was done handling my own luggage so when I checked in I dropped it with bell services before self parking my rental car. The valet was a bit cagey about where I should be parking and tried to send me to some lot far away. it's been a while since I've been at BWV but I replied "yeah but I can just park in that lot right over there, right?" He looked uncomfortable but then said "yes". I got a great spot very close to the building so not sure what that was all about. Bell services delivered my luggage very promptly. Other DIS friends there at the same time staying at value resorts had some major luggage issues but as always I found bell services at the deluxe/dvcs to be prompt.

I like the new decor, it is clean and crisp and feels like the shore to me without being kitschy. I was never a fan of the old pink and flowers and stuff but purchased BWV for the location, so I really like the changes. I felt like it was elegant and classy. My son LOVED the pull down bed... this is a huge value added to the room. Although it was just the two of us, it was nice to be able to leave the couch folded up and just have him in that bed. In fact, I was going to treat myself to a 1 bedroom (standard was available for not many more points and truth be told I prefer the standard view anyway) but it turned out the sleeping arrangements were better in the studio so I went with that. I was worried his pillow would fall off the top so I stuck the chair against it like a headboard and it was fine.

The room was clean when we got there and there were no maintenance issues. The only issue I had was my first night there, my neighbors came in late (it was part of a 2 bedroom lockoff) and it literally sounded like they were right there in my room. I could hear their conversations like they were talking directly at me and the banging and clattering of the drawers and silverware was driving me bonkers. I downloaded a white noise app on my phone and they shut up right around the time I figured it out. This was around 11:30pm.

Well then again at 3:30am I guess they were catching an early flight because there was much loud discussion and arguing about luggage. It was a really lousy night's sleep and I had to stop by the front desk to ask about something else and I asked if there was an issue with soundproofing. In my 17 years of owning BWV I have never heard anything like that. The front desk CM checked and confirmed there were 4 adults staying in that room who checked out today and that it was 2 adults checking in and told me it should be quieter. And it was, we did not hear a peep. So really I have no idea whether those people were just extraordinarily rude and loud OR if there is virtually no soundproofing between the rooms post refurb.

Entering through the international gateway a half hour before rope drop could not have been less stressful. We went through bag check, they let us in, we walked to future world where they were holding people from entering the two sides until closer to 9am. It was the least stressful rope drop I've been to!

Overall it was a good stay and I love my home resort of BWV.

Then we moved to the Poly for 3 nights. I dropped my luggage with bell services at BWV and we took off for Epcot. We ended up over at the Poly and I never got a text so I stopped by the front desk to check in. The CM was ok, not great, and we were not offered leis (it was a little disappointing as there was a pile back there but I felt silly asking!) We didn't have time to go to the room before our 5pm Narcooossees dinner so we just freshened up a bit in the Ohana bathroom and then got on the monorail (I was prepared with fresh shirts, brushes and deodorant, lol). After that we went to the MK. It was a wednesday night and the MK was open late among a sea of christmas parties so it was PACKED. We'd been at Epcot since rope drop and after waiting 20 minutes in the peter pan fastpass line, both the kid and I hit the wall and decided to go back to the Poly and watch the fireworks from there. I had no idea how my view would be or anything but figured we could find somewhere in the resort to watch.

This is the first time I have EVER stayed at the Poly... in all of my years of going to WDW I have stayed at every other deluxe resort, either the regular resort side or DVC side (in some cases both) but for some reason the Poly was last on my bucket list. We had a Lake view and were in room 2030 Moorea, very close to the elevators and a bit on the TTC side.

O. M. G. I was completely blown away! Polynesian Village, where have you been all my life? These rooms are downright gorgeous with a clean, beautiful mid-century modern with tiki twist vibe. They are so gorgeous, I want to move in forever. I loved the split bath and my son, who has sensory issues and hates showers LOVED the rain shower. LOVED it. he was begging me to take a shower every day. I could not believe how truly close we were to the TTC, what a pleasure to have all of those transportation options. MK and Epcot are our two favorite parks so obviously this is a great spot. Also bell services brought our luggage about 15 minutes after being called. It was a night so maybe that helped.

When we got to the room, I could not BELIEVE my view. I had seriously hit the wall in the MK and couldn't deal with the crowds any more and figured we'd deal with whatever fireworks viewing we could have at the room, but it was absolutely gorgeous. here is a view of regular wishes from our room (we also watched holiday wishes our last night from the balcony too).

Also I decided that I'd like a drink and called room service and ordered a couple of Island Sunsets from the Tambu Lounge menu. They will send up pretty much any drink you want (i asked what was available) or anything off the Tambu menu but nothing from Trader Sam because you have to go down there to have those specialty cocktails. We did pay a premium for the drinks obviously through room service but it was $28 or so for 2 drinks and given that an avocado margarita in epcot is $14, I was happy to pay it for the luxury of having it delivered to my room. The only thing is I didn't realize it was a frozen drink and it did come a little melted in the bottom, but once I stirred it all up it was actually the perfect silky texture for drinking without leaving flavorless ice behind.

Also I just want to address the complaints about ferry noise. Yes it was there but it was majorly muffled by the doors being closed. I live on Martha's Vineyard, which is only accessible by ferry, so ferry horns "in the distance" (which is how it sounded to me) was a very familiar and comforting sound and did not bother me in the slightest. It was not loud enough to wake me up while sleeping that's for sure, and the kid slept through it too.

I had planned a pool day here and my son LOVED the slide. The pool was beautiful and it was a great few hours, I wish I had built in more time for that. It happened to be the coolest day of the week (high around 67) but the water and sun were both warm and it was not uncomfortable AT ALL swimming in those conditions. I went down the pool slide a few times with the kid, it was a lot of fun - he went down many more.

on our last morning we had room service breakfast in the room before going to the airport. It was a lovely spread although pricey since I ordered everything I wanted without a care, lol.

This was an awesome finale to our stay and although I had to change my plans to put the poly at the end instead of the beginning, I am so glad I did. It would have been a serious bummer to leave that lovely resort and go to any other. I have a new love. Sorry BWV, it was great while it lasted!... just kidding, I still love my old resort. But I was completely utterly blown away by every aspect of the Poly. I am hoping I can get it on my next stay at 7 months.

I called about 15 minutes before I needed bell services to get to my car (which was near the great ceremonial house in that lot over there) and at about 20 minutes I got antsy and decided to make a go of it myself just as bell services showed up. This guy was super nice, handled the luggage and loaded us all into a golf cart and drove me directly to the car. What a great way to end the vacation with little to no stress! I LOVE THIS PLACE!

I love DVC and buying in in 1999 was one of the best decisions I've ever made! It was a great stay made affordable because of it. It was a truly magical trip from beginning to end with only a couple or minor bumps in the road... but I love my DVC!

Great review, thank you. The difference between Jambo and Kadani lobby size and Christmas decorations is that Kidani is a dedicated DVC resort so smaller lobby and decorations.

At BWV the people who unload your car are not Disney employees, they are allowed to unload and valet park your car, they pass your luggage off to bell services for storage and room delivery.

Lock-offs tend to have more room to room noise, some worse than others.

Just a test to see how dumb I am.......the drop down bed at BWV, did you just "know" how to lower the bed? It took my DH and I about 15 mins to figure out how to lower the bed. We were afraid we break something, trying to push buttons or whatever. At this point, 8 months later, I forget how it did work.

No lol, I had to ask the bell services guy to do it and he wasn't even 100% sure! It's totally not you! I kept trying to figure out how to fold up the table not realizing it folded itself up. I think you have to have two people to do it (which is kind of sucky as a single parent!) to push the buttons on both sides at the same time and pull the thing down and then the table folds into position on its own. I left it down the whole time too, heee.

Oh I didn't care about him passing my stuff off to bell services, i was just confused he was trying to send me to what seemed like an overflow parking lot further away.

This is my first time at Kidani and I probably would not target it again EXCEPT for the ease of access to dinner at Sanaa, which was phenomenal. I get that it's more like VWL than WL etc but it was just not my vibe I guess. Lots of choices for lots of tastes in DVC nowadays, I remember when it was OKW vs. BW and "size vs. location" battle to the death.

I know a lock off would but the amount of noise was insane. it literally sounded like those people were standing next to my bed. did not hear a peep out of the next people who moved in so was grateful :) I would have had to move of that nonsense was going to go on every night, I got almost no sleep that night!

Great report. Glad you had so many enjoyable experiences. One of the best things about DVC is the different accommodations that are available for different tastes. We're also BWV owners, and had a very nice stay on our last Poly visit. But we're the complete opposite at AKL. We really love the more peaceful atmosphere of Kidani, while we'll never stay at Jambo again because of the noise and the odd smell that permeates the lobby and into the guestrooms (not a one time thing, I'm afraid - we've also noticed it every time we've gone there to eat over the years).

While the tree at Kidani is smaller, but certainly not small by any means, the other decorations were as elaborate at Jambo house. We much prefer the quieter lobby at Kidani over Jambo.

Not sure why you had trouble finding Sanaa, you can either take the stairs down or the elevator.

We were in the first room off the lobby and used Rafiki elevator and did not find it far at all. Not sure where you were located.

Totally agree about noise coming into the room from the one bedrooms.

Because not all of the elevators go there. We ended up in the wrong elevator, wandered around a bit, went back up to the lobby and ended up in the right one.

We were pretty close to the lobby too. I just found the layout with only some elevators granting access to some areas of the resort to be confusing. If I understood the layout I might have tried to park closer to the lobby than closer to the rafiki elevator. At that point I was handling my own luggage so it was a bit of a haul. By the time I got to BWV I'd had enough and started letting bell services handle it (we were not going to be in the resort for very long so I figured I could handle it myself at kidani). In Jambo everything feels much more open to me. When you are standing in the lobby it is more obvious where the restaurants were. I was not a fan of the twisty paths to get places in Kidani. Wow this is starting to sound like the old BWV vs. OKW arguments. I didn't care much for Kidani for the reasons listed, you may or may not agree but it's my review of the place. I preferred Jambo the one time I stayed there.

I never noticed an odd smell but I haven't spent a lot of time there either. My first (and last) time at Jambo was in a concierge room and that was stellar, we really enjoyed that. overall any of the Epcot or MK resorts will always be my first choice over AKL but I will take AKL over either OKW or Saratoga Springs.... which is also the order in which they seem to book up :) that said, it was just for one night and Sanaa was standout and access to AK was quick and easy so it served its purpose. I just prefer Jambo over Kidani and most others over AKL in general.

How was your dinner at Narcoosee"s?
It was really awful. The lowlight of the trip. I'm guessing they were having a bad night. My soup came out with a skin on it and a scorching hot bowl that couldn't be touched, my son's "medium plain" steak came out cold and purple on the inside and sauced (i take the blame on the sauce for not being 100% explicit by what I meant by plain) and when they took it back to cook it more the sauce on the outside charred before it was nearly cooked medium and the runner brought it back rare on the inside (red and cool) and medium rare toward the edges (red and warm). the kid ate the medium rare parts. By the time I finished dealing with the kid's food I realized my lobster tails were undercooked also but the server never came around to see how the kid's steak was so i kind of picked at it and coped but it was not very good... it needed to be cooked like a minute or two more. It was not RAW just not cooked the way it tastes best. The creme brulee there is more like pudding but was tasty, but it made me more grumpy because I wanted creme brulee lol (i have since seen other reviews saying that about that dessert so it's not just me) but the kid loved his brownie sundae. Overall it is pretty much off our list for now, we don't go often and too many other places to eat at. I just expected better from a place where I racked up a $240 bill.

I am really sorry for your experience at Narcoosies. It is our favorite, and we end every trip there. But here is a data point. We were there in early December with my mother who is 84 years old. I had the halibut, which was excellent. My wife had the pasta, which was excellent. But my mom had the shrimp appetizer, which was awful. The shrimp was charred badly, and it tasted like the bottom of a grill. She kind of picked around it, but it was very unsatisfying. When our waiter asked how it was, we said excellent, excellent, and terrible. He apologized and took the plates away. Within a minute or two, the manager came by, apologized to my mother profusely, saying "that should never have left the kitchen". He then offered us all dessert on the house. When I got home, I looked at the bill, and I realized that they not only comped the dessert, they also took my moms dish off the bill. We then had an amazing time on the Narcoosies porch watching the fireworks. So in our experience, they could definitely screw up, but they really tried to make it right. It sucks that they did not for you.

I agree with you about Lake View at Poly. That is a great view and a great room. Were you able to hear the music from the fireworks from your room? I could not figure out how to get it over the TV, but we walked down to the beach outside the longhouse by the pool, and the music was playing there.

To me finding Sanaa at Kidani is much like finding Mara at Jambo, both require an elevator from the lobby to get there. You can't see either from the lobby, though the stars down to Sanaa seem easier to me to find as they are open and large.

As to the garage, we love it as it keeps the car cool but we always let Bell service take the luggage until we determine which elevator is closest to the room.

And yes, everyone has different likes and wants which is why I think it's good to share both perspectives for those that have never been to either.

We had the shrimp appetizer too. The shrimp were kind of charred but I thought that was part of the BBQ part. I thought it was "just okay" and didn't detect any bbq sauce on it until my last bite... and now that I look at the photo it does look quite charred (though not to the level of inedible) and that probably overpowered the bbq sauce, the last bite of shrimp I had is all the way to the left. Looking at other pics online they do not look that charred to me so I'm thinking they were overcooked. It was just "meh" and I was excited to be there and talking the kid through trying some as well. But as you can see the shrimp on the right is quite charred and what you didn't see under the pile of stuff on top is that the shrimp all seemed to have a fine coating of ash on them that weren't directly burned shrimp. But like I said I thought it might be part of the bbq part of the presentation and that the overall dish was just not fantastic. I don't mind a little char on my proteins in general anyway. It was ok but not great but I think if the shrimp were properly cooked it could have been great because my last bite where I got bbq sauce, less cooked shrimp and grits was the best bite of the whole dish and quite good.

here is the lobster soup, it sat a few minutes before kiddo and I got into it so I thought the skin had formed at that point since it sat a bit but in my photos (which I took immediately upon serving) it came out of the kitchen that way. I did stir it in though and it wasn't bad enough that it didn't stir in and if that were the only issue I would not have really said a word about it

20161207_172030_zpsto6dawkp.jpg

and here is my son's steak AFTER the recooking, so you can imagine how raw it was brought out:

20161207_1746551_zpsnlhazxut.jpg

you can see it is quite charred on the outside and the inside is still quite raw. He ate the parts that were red and warm but as soon as he hit a cold piece the gagging ensued and he wouldn't touch it again. I am usually sort of willing to cope with one degree of difference in temperature one way or the other but if I ordered medium there should be nothing cold and raw tasting anywhere in it, ESPECIALLY after it was sent back once.

Seems to me like you had a server who was much more on the ball. I think I'd be whining a whole lot less if a manager had appeared and truly cared that things were made right rather than a running returning a still underdone steak and no one ever following up after that, realizing my own food was also underdone and just not having the energy to have to flag someone down to complain. I also wanted to order a second glass of wine but no one ever came at an appropriate time to ask about that either. What I should have done was had both entrees sent back and both returned cooked properly from scratch, but I wasn't feeling like having a fight right then and there and our waitress was not really warm or welcoming or approachable or even really very present. If a manager had showed up and tried to make it right chances are I would not be complaining right now and they would have made it right. Disney USUALLY does the right thing.

I may sound like I am being too picky but we ate at Coral Reef and the total was less than half. I had both shrimp and grits and creamy lobster soup and both were perfectly prepared, no skin, no char. Just right on. Kiddo had a steak and it was perfectly prepared too, perfect medium. So maybe the bar was just too high, but when I look at the $240 bill I don't think so!

I think it was more taking a wrong elevator that wouldn't go there and then having to come back upstairs and then go down again. Also the bathroom from Sanaa is kind of hard to find too (not really hard to find but I wasn't sure I was in the right place until I got there). Sanaa itself was great though. I didn't realize the stairs went there until I saw them from the bottom. It obviously would not be a problem the second time and like I said, I'd probably stay there just to eat at Sanaa and roll back to my room. It's just not my favorite resort and I'm not clamoring to go back... which should be good for people who are, less competition.

I totally understand. Sometimes you just want a nice meal without drama. I actually didn't expect them to do anything for us, so I was surprised when they did.

It's nice that they did, but all I wanted was my meal the way it should have been and I would have been fine. I am pretty easily to please really (which is why I ate the burned shrimp lol). But every other meal we had was great so I can't complain overall.

We have booked a similar stay for January. We will be spending the first 2 nights
At Jambo in a savanna view studio, then 5 nights at the Poly in a studio and the last 4 nights at BWV in 1 bdrm villa.
We decided that we would start our vacation more relaxed at AK.
Our flight arrives in Orlando at 12:30 so we will have lunch at the Rainforest cafe or Yak n Yeti and then head back to the resort .. relax with a few drinks and have dinner at Jiko.
The next day we will go to AK lunch at Tiffins and dinner at Sanaa.
The next morning we will head to Mk and book into the Poly.
This is the first time we have ever booked a split stay and I hope it gies smoothly.
We have eaten at almost every TS restaurant at WDW and the worst signature restaurant experience was Narcoosies. We will not return.
Service was terrible and the lobster was undercooked and when it arrived at our table it was cold. My son's steak was overcooked and server forgot to bring our appetizers.
It was a total disaster.

We have booked a similar stay for January. We will be spending the first 2 nights

The best tip I read was to pack your suitcases according to stay not person. this worked out really well for me as I didn't have to unpack and repack everything, just one of my suitcases per stay. I unpacked it into the drawers then repacked as we used stuff. It was not bad at all especially with Disney delivering the luggage. i did not find the waits long at either Poly or BWV, took care of myself at AKL.

Thanks for the great recap. Staying at Poly studios in May after a lot of deliberation and reading how great it was for you makes me very happy with our decision.
