We had the best time at Fort Wilderness 8/17 - 8/24!
It was our 3rd visit to the cabins over the last 7 years, but it was by far the best, probably because our kids are now 6 and 8 years old. We were very anxious given we arrived the day after the campground reopened from Hurricane Charley, but the entire trip was great.
Our daughter got 32 autographs from characters and was the first to see Mickey Mouse one morning (can't beat that)! And our son spent his days counting how many times he rode on the roller coasters! They also both got into the pin collecting (geez that's an expensive habit!) Also did Typhoon Lagoon a couple days which is an absolute necessity in the August heat.
We tended to do the park early AM until about 3PM (when the clouds turned rather ominous most days), then we'd get the grill ready and cook some dinner, hang out and talk with our 'neighbors' in the campground. Then we'd head over with the kids for the sing a long at the campfire program and then down to the beach to watch the fireworks (we've seen most of the movies before). At the beach we just sat back with our cooler; sometimes staying there for a couple of hours while the kids built sand castles and played tag with other kids. It was also during the Olympics and it was quite funny watching all the kids doing the long jump in the sand!
Having stressful jobs with long hours in a part of CT often considered a suberb of NYC; I cannot think of a better way to escape from that whole world for awhile and rejuvenate!
Having stayed at Dixie Landings and Boardwalk before, we will always go back to the cabins - it can't be beat!
