Trip Report - Skyline Drive, Williamsburg, VA

Thanks for taking us along on your trip, I really enjoyed the photographs! I particularly liked the 7th from the start (properties identified as "http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i187/mamagrumpy/Skyline%20Drive%202008/IMG_9495_1.jpg") - framing it with the mass of pink flowers on the right really made it for me. Do you know what kind of flowers (plant, tree, whatever) those were? The other one that really caught my attention was the picture of the back side of the nickel with Monticello in the background - that was a really interesting perspective, probably not all that difficult, but still well done and one that many of us pass up on the opportunity for.

Great Pics of Busch and Colonial Williamsburg. I can't believe I am that old....Loch Ness Monster turns 30...I was there for opening day and I was 10 going on 11!!!:scared1: The Festhaus also brings back many memories...I can't tell you how many times I have sat in there, eating Black Forest Cake and listening to the band...great memories! Thanks!:thumbsup2

The pics of Colonial Williamsburg really bring back memories. Of course I took it all for granted growing up in the area and got tired of seeing it anytime someone came to visit or we took a class trip. Now that I am older, I do appreciate the richness of the history available there. My parents still live there and we visit when we can. I will try to post some Christmas pictures in December when we visit. I have some now, but they were with our old P&S and the nighttime shots left a lot to be desired. Colonial Williamsburg is really pretty at Christmas time.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

That's kind of how I am with Kennywood Park here in Pittsburgh (West Mifflin) - I grew up going there lots of times every year (I remember when it was absolutely FREE to get in and you just bought tickets for whatever rides you wanted to go on), plus school picnics, etc. and I actually got tired of it. Now that I don't go quite to frequently, I enjoy it again.

Hi Fred! That plant with the pink flowers is Mountain Laurel. There was also a lot of white Mt. Laurel in the park, too. I believe it's in the same family as rhododendrons and azalea. DH wants to plant some Mt. Laurel around our house, but I've tried growing rhododendrons and azalea numerous times and always manage to kill them no matter what I do. My neighbors have huge plants, but I kill them the first year.:confused3

DS18 had the idea of the Monticello photo with the back of the nickel, so I'll be sure to pass along your praise (and yours, too YEKCIM). Trust teenagers to have a different perspective on things!

Amy - Your pictures are wonderful! And your trip sounds like it was a hit too! I especially liked your mountain view scenes. Anytime I can glimpse those rollin' mountains, waves of blue haze I am instantly relaxed. You did a great job!

Thanks - my wife thought they looked like they might be related to the rhododendron. I am fortunate that I don't need to grow any rhododendron - I have loads of neighbors who have great success in growing them, so I just enjoy theirs :lmao: . Thanks again for sharing your trip, my wife and I both enjoyed the pictures.

Wow! Great pictures! You took so many! I have been working with Busch Gardens Williamsburg and went to the park two weeks ago. I had so much fun!! The Griffon was my favorite roller coaster, but I thought they were all awesome. We had lunch at Das Festhaus - the food was great and the show was so much fun to watch! It made me want to dance! For anyone else planning a trip to Busch Gardens Williamsburg soon, I recommend eating there (after you go on the Griffon a few times)!
Love the pictures!

Amy, I really enjoyed your pictures and your mini trip report! We have been considering a camping trip that would hit all your vacation spots! Maybe next summer:rolleyes1 . We went camping along the skyline drive several years ago, and I just loved it. It was pre-DSLR era for me, and I would love to go back. Your pics make me want to do that even more!

I also have to chime in to say that the nickel shot is very creative!

Nice shots. Thanks for sharing. I'm a huge history buff and have only been up that way once or twice (last time was over 10 years ago in my teens) - hope to go back with DW sometime in the next couple of years to at least to Williamsburg/Jamestown/Richmond and Washington, D.C. - though I could spend an entire trip doing just Civil War battlefields, DW would be a bit bored, though... :)

And I saved the best for last - this is one of my favorites:

Hope you enjoyed them!

 the angle on this one. Great shot Amy! :thumbsup2

A lovely collection of photographs Amy- I enjoyed all of them. It sure looks like a beautifull part of the country- makes me want to visit one day soon. The Griffon looks a lot like Sheikra at BG Tampa- I have not been on that either.

Great pics! Other than Disney my other favorite spots is Williamsburg, Skyline Drive, & Luray Caverns.

DH & I went to Williamsburg for our honeymoon over 17 years ago. We used to go every year after that and even stayed in the same hotel each year. One year when we went we took the night time ghost tour - that was really cool!

Again - great pictures - thank you for sharing!
