Disney Wonder May 28, 2004 – Trip Report

My trip report will not be a minute by minute of what we did. I don’t think that would be appealing to the reader. I will however, post a rough agenda of events and my likes and dislikes.

Bio – this may help you understand some of my likes/dislikes. I am a 59 year-old, widower & grandfather. My traveling companion is my surrogate granddaughter. No blood relation but very bonded to this child. Her mother works with me at a hotel I manage in middle Georgia. Her father was recently killed while serving the US Air Force in Iraq. The trip was to celebrate Devina’s 8th birthday – the first one without her father.

We drove to Port Canaveral. Spent the night on the way at The Jameson Inn – Jacksonville, Florida. That made for about a 2½-hour drive the day of departure.

Arrived about 11:30 and visited Shirley at The Perfect Gift.

Arrived at the ship shortly after 12 noon. Lines were not too bad. Entire check-in process took less than an hour. I handed the greeter a card explaining it was Devina’s birthday – the chorus sprang to life with the appropriate song. That’s guest service!

Ate lunch and went to room 6583 (great location – middle of everything) about 1:30.

FIRST DISAPPOINTMENT: On my next cruise I will to try to budget more for the room. I found the category eleven cramped – even for one adult and one child. I don’t blame Disney for this; I blame a lack of budgeting on my part. The lack of storage space mandated that we walk around two large suite cases for the duration of the trip. Cases probably would have fit under the bed but I’m not sure every thing in the cases would have fit in the drawers. I sneaked a peak at a verandah room and became instantly jealous!

Our room was clean. I’m very picky about that; hotel management for 30 years. The room attendant called me by name every time we encountered him in the hall. That’s impressive.

SECOND DISAPPOINTMENT: The “beverage cooler” was a complete waste of space. It felt no cooler than the temperature of the room. Bottled water never became “cool” from this cooler.

Took Devina swimming in the Mickey Pool. Even though she enjoyed the hot tub at the family pool the Mickey Pool was by far her favorite. The pool and the big yellow slide is a child’s dream-come-true. Even though Devina is exposed to a pool on a daily bases at home, this one intrigued her and held her captive.

The sail away party was fantastic. Bring bubbles – its adds to the excitement.

I was glad I had the advantage of the education from this forum. Without it, I would have been overwhelmed! The ship is huge and can be intimidating and confusing for a first time cruiser.

I will not analyze each restaurant or each meal. Food is such a personal matter that my opinions could be meaningless to others. I will only comment that I thought the appetizers and the desserts were outstanding. The main entrées were no better or worse than many good/fine dining establishments. All food presentations were far above average.

THIRD DISAPPOINTMENT: A child “Smoothie” is charged at the rate of $3.75. That’s nearly as much as my martini! I would not mind paying even more for the martini but $3.75 is too much for a child’s drink. Along the same line, I resented paying $1.75(other than at meal time) for a cola. It’s not the money as much as it is the inconvenience but, considering what was paid for the cruise the cola should be included!

FOURTH DISPOINTMENT: This one real “got-to-me”. I don’t mind tipping. It is a way of life and I am OK with that. What I don’t like is people begging for more tips even after a suggested amount has been listed. I got tired of hearing (paraphrased) “Aren’t we giving you great service. Doesn’t the assistant waiter do a good job? Let’s all stand and applaud our wait staff etc., etc.,” It appeared to a constant, on-going, never ending, dialog! It was as redundant as the adjectives in that last sentence.

The child’s program is fabulous. Devina thoroughly enjoyed all the activities available to her. She especially enjoyed the part where I could be paged to answer her “demand” for a sweater. The paging system gives a lot of peace of mind and a true feeling of security.

The characters where the highlight of the cruise. They possess the “patience of Job”. I’m confident they suffer from much abuse but they never showed anything except charm and loving attention to the children. Signing of autographs is a nice touch.

The stage productions were awesome. Professionalism abounded in the acting, costumes, music and overall production.

Guest service was the best I have experience anywhere! One thing I noticed was the crewmembers always spoke English. A small thing but (to me) is was important. You never have to wonder about what they are saying. While waiting to pay my tips at guest service, two people came to inquire about lost and found; both retrieved the items they had lost! I complimented a lady cleaning the elevator on a job well done. She referred to them as HER elevators. The cleanliness was a matter of personal pride.

Nassau was predictable. The Dolphin Encounter was fantastic. Caution: While holding Devina’s hand and walking the sidewalk to the Straw market, I was approached and asked if I wanted to buy some weed! Unaccompanied teens might not be a good idea in Nassau.

Castaway Island was (a little) disappointing. I felt that more umbrellas would have been very appropriate and should have been furnished. Extremely hot the day we were there; we only stayed till about 12:30. The island is beautifully maintained in the typical Disney style. Not having to be tendered to shore is impressive.

Leaving the ship (I can’t spell debarkation) was smooth as silk. If only the airports could handle luggage as efficiently as Disney does.

My disappointments were petty in the over scheme of things. Overall it was money well spent and I would recommend it to anyone – traveling with/for children. Even though there was good adult entertainment available – the Dueling Pianos is a great act- most adults would probably be better entertained on a different cruise line. But again, that’s a personal decision.

I will be glad to answer any PM’s and/or respond to any post concerning my trip.

I got the impression that the overall reason for your cruise was to help Devina deal with not having her daddy here for her 8th birthday. My question to you then is this? Was your trip successful in helping that precious child? It is a tragedy for any child to lose a parent at such a young age, but losing them just prior to a birthday or any holiday makes that occasion so gloomy instead of happy. Was Devina able to put aside her sorrow, if even only for a short period of time?

Excellent trip report. Thanks! Your concerns were very similar to mine and I think this forum is a good place to share them.

Above all, however, I am really glad to hear that you were able to give that little surrogate granddaughter a special birthday! I pray it eased her pain for a few days.

WOW … what great questions. Thanks for your concern.

Devina’s maturity is far reaching. Her father was killed September 11, 2003. The passing of time does not make it better; it only helps one to cope. Devina has had the benefit of an excellent teacher at school and the guidance of a counselor that specialized in child grieving. After two months of counseling, she told the counselor that she understood that her daddy would not be coming home again. She asked if they could now read some stories that would remind her of the happy times she had with her daddy – that’s powerful!

Only once when she was with me, did she react in sorrowful manner. We were waiting in line to ride the bumper cars at the county fair. She held her arms up for me to pick her up. Lovingly placed her head on my shoulder and softly cried that she missed her daddy.

The last week of school the children were invited to “Donuts With Daddy”. That one hit her hard. She would not let me go, “Mr. Bill is GRANDdaddy”. Another (younger) friend of the family filled-in.

We spoke of her daddy twice during the trip. Both times were positive and it felt right. I feel that Devina’s own mind control contributes as much to her well being as the trip did to her entertainment. The cruise gave her something to look forward to. Hopefully the memories of the trip will be stimulating and fill thought processes that might otherwise be depressing.

So many have shown great concern for Devina. The following is part of another post that will tell you more about the Devina I know & love:

Devina had a WONDERful trip. I’m sure she has acquired a lifetime of memories. Andy (VERANDAH MAN) and Shirley (The Perfect Gift) were instrumental in making this a once in-a-lifetime event.

Devina was greeted by the crew sing “Happy Birthday” as we boarded. Then Mickey & Minnie (somehow) found out about her birthday and had several surprises waiting for her in our room. A birthday cake was presented at dinner and once again, she was serenaded to the tune of the b’day song!

She was thrilled by the big yellow slide. The characters simply “blew-her-away” with their charm and willingness to sign autographs. She played so very hard each day and late into the night that getting up the next morning was a chore. When she finally got awake it was full-steam ahead until midnight again.

She slept 4 of the 7 hours it took to drive back to middle Georgia. How interesting it would have been to be able to peak in on her WONDER dreams.

Devina has brought much joy to my life through her mental maturity. Her ability to accept the things she cannot change is amazing. When I see the way she has handled her loss, it makes me embarrassed of the selfish grief in my life over the loss of my wife several years ago.

Devina is a remarkable child:

GIFTED CHILD PROGRAM AT SCHOOL – INVITED TO SKIP A GRADE BUT HER MOTHER (WISELY) REFUSED

ASSISTED THIRD & FOURTH GRADERS WITH THEIR READING AND MATH – SHE WAS IN THE SECOND GRADE AT THE TIME!

3.97 AVERAGE FIRST TWO YEARS IN SCHOOL

RECIPIENT OF AN ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP FOR CAMP THIS SUMMER

INVITED TO PARTICIPATE THIS SUMMER IN AN ADVANCED READING & WRITING PROGRAM AT MERCER UNIVERSITY

Thanks again to Andy and Shirley for helping me bring joy to a special child.

Bill

Incidentally … when asked by some of the people I had met on this forum how they would recognize me on the ship, my reply was:

“I will be with Devina. We stand out in a crowd. She’s young (8), pretty, slender, dark haired and dark skinned ....... I’m not!!”

Hi Mr. Bill,
I am sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you and Devina on the trip. I looked, but wow, there was alot of people. I didn't get to meet any of our fellow Dis'ers. My hubby and I decided 3 days was NOT long enough.
I am glad to hear you both had a wonderful time.

I agree, there were a lot of people on board for that 3 night cruise. Mr. Bill, I think I saw you at the sail away party. You mentioned that you were bringing a bubble gun and I only noticed one gentleman holding one when I took my DD to the restroom. When we came out, I had lost you in the crowd though. I did meet up with Carolyn, aka EvergreenMom on Castaway Cay. She actually picked me out based on my Boston accent and we ended up being within beach chairs of each other. We were hoping that Mr. Bill would remember the advice from the boards and head past Cookies. It was a great spot and plenty of space available. Our two daughters had fun catching minnows together.

Tammi

It was a great cruise but 3 days isn't really enough time to do everything you want. It is a great cruise for the first time people not knowing what to expect. I would really like to do either the 4 day or a 7 day cruise sometime soon.

I did get to meet both Tammi and Mr. Bill I just walked right up to them and started talking. I guess I got real lucky that it turned out to be them I was talking too.:p I had a great time on the Crusie but too short. Cataway Cay was to die for. I asked my husband if we could move to and Island like it:p
