Day Six: More Water Fun with Cinderella, and a Real Resort

The torch once again gets tossed to me. We have been looking forward to this day since spending the horror nights at the POP hotel. But first there was something we needed to get out the way. Typhoon lagoon was our first destination of the day. We had gotten up at the crack of dawn to be at the gates by 8am. We arrived at were the second family in line yay!!! Luckily it was only 20 min until they let us in. 8am came and they were still waiting for the call to let us in. 8:05, 8:10 what are they thinking, the park opened 10 min ago (some magic hour, it should be called magic 45 min). They finally let us in, it was almost 8:15 and the line was starting to grow quite long. We managed to get some distance between us and “them”. We ducked into one of the shops and got our towels then found a nice “dry” chair to place our things on and headed to one of there new slides. It was like a roller coaster in an inner tube. Two bad things were there like a million flights of stairs and we were like “yeah we aren’t doing this too many times”. The next bad thing was that the dips our a little harsh on your buttock area. We walked away with sore butts. Word to the wise Blizzard Beach is WAY COOLER! Next we decided to venture and check out the shark reef, which sounds cooler then it really is. You stop and pick up your goggles and snorkels. Then proceed to a holding area where an instructor goes over the rules of the reef and go over how to use our snorkel gear. The bad thing here is that you have to straight across so there is no going back or lingering around. And also you have to stay on the surface so we are not allowed to dive down to see the stingrays and sharks only observe them from the surface. Why don’t they just have a glassed tank where you see them through glass? (What’s the point!)? Well anyway, there is a small island they put up for use in case of problems with snorkel gear (like taking a mouthful of saltwater). My goggles where not on right so I had to stop to adjust them and to blow out some water that had gotten in my air tube and proceeded to swim on my way. The scenery was very nice so don’t get me wrong above comment. It probably won’t be something I will do again. (Unlike parasailing from day five). I got some nice pictures with my underwater camera of a shark, a stingray and a group of fish. When I had arrived at the end Mike was waiting for me and recovering from his 2nd near death experience at a Disney Water Park. (He had taking in some salt water and had to get to the exit landing quickly before he started to drown). They have quite a few lifeguards in the pool so they are there to rescue troubled swimmers, asking if he was ok and needed any help. (Mike’s Addendum: Now, I have snorkeled before in the Bahamas and on the Disney Island, but I certainly was not prepared for this cold water and a mouthful of saltwater in my throat as I traversed the 2 feet to get to the exit of Shark Reef. I tried to remain calm, but the lifeguards must have freaked because when I got to the end there were four of them surrounding me as I coughed up saltwater…John was having a party with the Stingrays as I had my second close encounter with death) Also as a side note the water is a bit cold so it takes a little time to get used to. We had had enough of that so we jumped into the lazy river, which Mike loves. The bad thing here is that they had closed the cool cavern you go through so you have to get out, then walk around and get in again after the exit of the cavern. (The word was that have had problems in the cave with teenagers, so I think they just closed it to avoid any more problems) We went half way around and got out and decided to hit the wave pool. This is the only highlight of typhoon lagoon. The waves must have been like 10 feet and they go every 2-3 minutes. We caught a few waves then I got tired and left Mike to own devices (It was fun watching him playing in the waves). When he was finished we got our things and left the park. (Mikes Addendum: John is right, I loved the Wave Pool! But I also lost my Key Card in the Wave Pool because these are like real waves, so let’s be careful out there) It was just in the nick of time too because as we were leaving we sighted 2-3 BTG’s OH NO!!! We hopped into our nice car and drove back to the POP. (Mikes Addendum: I seem to be adding a lot to this day…maybe I should have written it…I have to replace my Key Card, so I send John off to look for breakfast…he didn’t see anything he wanted at Disney’s Motel 8 food court, and I got a new key card without any problems…all I had to say was Typhoon Lagoon Wave Pool) We were so happy to be leaving today and to be going to our “Real " resort. When we arrived back at the room we finished packing and loaded up our arms with our luggage and headed out the door. (I make a point of having to carry out the luggage for later references) Since we had taking care of the bill the previous day and had express checkout we left madness of toilets and swimmers.

Arriving at the Wilderness lodge about 10 minutes later we were overwhelmed with emotions. It was quite welcoming on the outside but it does no justice for the inside and the courtyard. (Mike will add more on this later…or now…This resort is gorgeous. The lobby is incredible, and just the fact that they have lobby is an incredible thing after Disney Motel 8. There is a fountain at the end of lobby which when we followed out of the resort we find feeds the pool down below after meandering through what appears to me to an evergreen forest at Yosemite. This courtyard is complete with bunnies and in the lobby area there are adults…a few kids, but they are not screaming). We both decide to use valet for just $7 a day. (Mike Addendum: John has actually never valet parked before, so I kind of asked him, but knew that this is what we were doing…I was not going to carry the luggage anymore) This takes a load off of us trying top find a parking place and you have use whenever you want. The valet takes our car and the bellhop loads our luggage to be stored until later since it is too early to check in and our room is not ready yet. We stop at the front desk and do an advanced check in and they give us a card with a phone number to call to check when room will be ready. They also informed us that we had been upgraded to a courtyard view from our standard view room which made us very happy.

After being blown away from the inside of hotel, (it was soooooo big inside) we found our way to the boat launch and then set sail for the Magic Kingdom and lunch with Cinderella. After entering the gates and stepping onto Main Street we find that we are too early for reservations with the Princess and so decide to do some shopping. While in one shop we discover the Main Street dancers outside performing (Clang Clang Clang went the Trolley) and leave the coolness of the shop and brave the humidity for WDW entertainment. It is a fun little show where they take the trolley up and down Main Street stopping periodically to sing and dance. We saw it twice and being the big dorks that we are we danced and followed right along with them. (Mike’s Addendum: I really need to stop these tangents and let John’s Trip Report alone...I for one being a big Judy Garland Fan, cannot resist this show, hence why we watched this show like four times I think…I just love it! Easily one of the best shows on Disney Property) Back to the store we go and the lovely AC. We find some cool things for our roommate’s daughters (Little Princesses) and some things for our scrapbook we are planning on doing. (They have some cool things in the parks to make your scrapbook extra magical) Having some more time we walk around seeing if we can do rides and the waits are very crazy so we duck into Mikey's Philharmagic show and by the time we exit it is time to join Cinderella and her royal court for lunch. After registering we entered the main hall and we got in line to see Cinderella for our souvenir picture everyone gets in the price for lunch (This turned out very nice). We sat for a little and they called my name “Princess John” LOL We had a laugh on that one. (Mike Addendum: I especially enjoyed them calling the table for Princess John...hehehehehe...they just got so into the habit of calling the family name and then saying off the all the little Princesses, that it was surprising for them to come across a John I guess). Lunch was very romantic. We got a window seat so we got to see Fantasyland from our table. The food was good as all our meals have been. I had some pasta dish and I forget what mike since he has gone off to sleep. (Addendum: Since someone is keeping me up…I had Sheppard’s Pie thingy which was very good; and we had this appetizer thing that was not so good, and then desert was Blueberry pie, I think Cinderella called it something else though…and now back to CNN…John…wait I just remembered what Cinderella called her desert…Blueberry Buckle???? What is that??? Is that correct….ok I am going to bed…I have to be up for school tomorrow…no kids though so I should be ok to finish up days 7 and 8 after editing and addenduming John’s Day 6…CNN Headline News with John reports that…) Ok where was I, Yeah I remember lunch at Cinderella’s. We got to see the other 3 princesses Snow White, Belle and Aurora also the fairy Godmother. It was a good time. We got out of there pretty quickly, since apparently they have a schedule they have to keep, and very shortly after the big make a wish celebration and much waving of wands and magical twinkly lights they want us out.

By this time the park had filled up so we head back to Main Street and package pickup for our gifts we had purchased earlier and head to city hall to check on our room. We call and check the status of our room it was still not ready. (I guess they were shampooing the rugs and it needed time to dry. Why would you upgrade someone to that room then????) Well anyways we catch the boat back to WL it stops at FW first then it stops for us. Heading to the lobby from the boat dock we are lucky to see the 40 foot geyser going off. (What a sight that was. You don’t see that at the POP. Just a 40 ft Lady and Tramp sculpture) it is 2:45 now and room is still not ready. The front desk informed us to check back around 3pm which we do, and it is still not ready and are told we could take a standard view. (And give up our courtyard view. Are you crazy!! So we waited) Now at the POP this wait would have driven Mike nuts, but here at his home away from home (they welcomed us home when we checked in) it was all good…

Mike found a big comfy couch to take a nap in and I headed off to explore and to window shop in the resort gift emporium. An hour later we were allowed to our room which was on the fourth floor right off the lobby. The view from our room was awesome. The room itself was very nice and very spacious and the TV is a flat screen HD. There is also a balcony which overlooks the Evergreen forest and the stream and waterfall going down to the pool, and the geyser. We are welcomed by towel animals on our bed. We test out the toilets to see if they are noisy, but they pass the quiet test. Front desk has already sent for a bellhop with our luggage with out even having to ask (This beats dragging our luggage around at the POP). We tip the guy and send him on his way and we lay down for afternoon to rest for our dinner tonight. It’s a very romantic resort…and we don’t fall asleep right away. :rolleyes1

We are once again awakened by “Stitch” (this must be a standard wake up call, but it is cool anyway) and get ready to catch a bus for the Contemporary for dinner. It starts to pour but luckily we are on the bus to the MK. We walk from bus stop to the resort which isn’t very far. By now it is just barely sprinkling. We are looking forward to eating at the California Grill and watching the fireworks afterwards. Arriving at the security check in point for the California Grill we are greeted by unfriendly snooty hostess. Mike tells her we are there for our 8 pm reservation. She informs him that “No it is not. We have you for 9:30”. Mike is aware that California Grill has problems at their Hostess Stand, so he a little more emphatically but still in a kind Disney manner states that it is 8:00. The debate continues with her and after arguing with her about the time of our supposed reservation and being told we were wrong for about the 3rd time, Mike has it out with her and tells her in a not so nice Disney voice to drop the attitude, and telling here all about the bad things that we have heard from online boards about the hostess stand here at the California Grill and the common rudeness we and others have encountered. She finally gives us a buzzer thing and sends us up stairs to eat. Mike leaves her trembling in anger and shaking she excuses herself and states she needs a break leaving a line of people at the counter and heads into the back office area. We are waiting at the elevator when moments later we hear a big thud like something being thrown and out she comes from the back office. Apparently she had gone in the back to throw a tantrum. We laughed and looked at each other and agree that if she needs a new job and that she shouldn’t be in customer service.

We have a seat at the bar and a manager comes over and asked how everything is, soooooo Mike describes the situation and still in his not so nice Disney voice tells him how we have heard about all of the problems at the hostess stand and that perhaps he needs to address them at some point. Manager goes away and minutes later this waitress comes over and says that there is a window seat in her section of the lounge and that if we wanted we could eat our dinner there. Mike and I both know that this little angel was sent by the manager, but at this point we don't care. I think we got the best server in the place, and the best server in all of WDW proceeds to turn our experience right around for us. Abbee suggests a few drinks for us to order. I get this double rum thing which is really strong and Mike gets something on the rocks. (Jack Daniels…I really needed it) We enjoy our drinks and start to losen up a bit from early encounter with the Hostesss from hell. It is time to order appetizers. I get a heart of romaine salad which is delicious and Mike gets this Cheese sampler thingy with like 5 different cheese including Goat cheese. (I don’t like goat cheese much). He tries to get me to try some knowing I don’t really like it. (Addendum: John does not like goat cheese, but they were not all goat cheese…I had him try some of the others because if it’s not goat cheese, John really likes cheese) I got this awesome Scallop dish and Mike got a beef filet which he liked, I think. For dessert I ordered this really tastey molten chocolate cake with a warm gooey center. It was to die for. I think Mike got this fruity ice crème desert thing. I would ask him but he is sleeping and don’t want to get yelled at for waking him. (Wise choice although, if he really is worried about keeping me up perhaps eating potato chips while writing this trip report is not the best thing to be doing) The dinner was probably the second best we had in all our stay next to Bistro de Paris. Abbee the waitress was the greatest and she comped our drinks for us for our bad hostess experience. We wound up eating dessert just as Wishes was starting. This is a really good spot for Wishes since the restaurant in on the top of the contemporary resort and perfect viewing of the Magic Kingdom and they also feed the music into the restaurant. (So you want to have a nice romantic dinner then watch a spectacular fireworks show try out the Cali Grill).

We finished our dessert and headed out to catch a bus back to WL. It was funny to stand at the bus stop and see all the people for Pop and I think we were like the only people for WL. Needless to say we got back to our resort quickly and didn’t have to wait hours like we did at the POP. We arrived back to our room full from dinner and just relaxed and were able to catch the Electric Water light pageant that goes all around the bay and lagoon for all the resorts on the water from our lovely balcony, which they don’t have at the POP. It was a nice relaxing day. Our mood is different since switching resorts. It is very romantic at the WL. We hop into our comfy king bed and drift off to sleep. Everything is quiet and peaceful, and ….. :cloud9:

I love the Wilderness Lodge!
