We don't generally miss any shows because of smoking, but that's because we arrive early for any shows being held in Rockin' Bar D or Wavebands and select a seat as far away as possible from the smoking sections. Here are some hints for non-smokers:
The best place to be is on the lefthand side if you are facing the stage. Otherwise, in the middle and righthand sections, the smokers will be right behind you...reminds me of the restaurants where smoking and non-smoking are separated by some invisble barrier, and if you are in the last non-smoking booth, the people sitting next to you are lighting up. I am very sensitive to smoke and get an allergy attacks and even a sinus infection if I'm around it too much (Sovereign of the Seas...ugh!). But on Disney, it does not generally bother me if I preplan and choosing my seating carefully. But be warned...once the club gets full, you will definitely start to smell it. That's why we generally leave right after YMCA on 70's Night and right after the other activities such as Match Your Mate. We'd probably spend more time there if it wasn't so smoky, but I can only tolerate a certain amount before the sinuses rebel.
A couple of times we've smelling smoke pretty bad on our verandah, but since we are usually in 5650 it's not as much of a problem because the verandah is more recessed, and that seems to help. Also, we have been pretty lucky and haven't ended up with chain smokers next door very often.
On
Castaway Cay, be aware that smokers might take the lounge chairs right next to you, and if those chairs are close, you might be gagging on a cloud of their smoke. We try to pick beach chairs with some distance to avoid this.
I do have to say that Disney is one hundred percent better than
RCCL at meeting the needs of non-smokers. On Sovereign, smoking was allowed in many of the interior areas, and the walls were literally yellowed. I spend half that cruise with a kleenex stuffed up my nose to staunch the flow from my rebelling sinuses. I've never had a problem like that on Disney.
