In the past when we've done cruises, our TA has arranged for insurance for us. We have a trip to Barcelona planned for April, we are not using a TA, and I'd like to look into insurance. I went to insuremytrip.com, but am overwhelmed and not quite sure how to differentiate between policies.

Here are my specific concerns...
1) Flight delays
2) Lost luggage
3) Medical needs (son will be playing soccer during the trip)
4) Terrorist attack (I know, doubtful, but the thought is out there)

Anyone have any guidance or suggestions on what to look for/avoid?

Call them. Way easier to tell them what you want and have them help you find it.

(Assuming you're calling the clearinghouse place that ends in my trip and you noticed their name is blocked, a sticky post on the cruise board says that THEY asked to have themselves blocked. They were getting too many hits and it was messing with something. They aren't naughty or anything.)

You want a comprehensive insurance package. Most of the carriers at that site and others will have 2 or more different packages at varying prices, with varying levels of coverage and restrictions. I generally look at packages in the same price range and compare coverages, if the coverage levels seem low or there are too many restrictions I look at the next level of pricing. Once I have the right level I compare among the better-rated carriers to find who has the best coverage for the best price and purchase that. If there are specific types of coverage that are more important to you then you can focus on those.

I did a chat with that site and they said "anything relating the the competition would not be covered". Since the entire trip is put on for the competition, I'm not sure how that would work.

If you have a relationship with your TA they might still be able to get you a policy even for a trip you booked yourself. Most TA's might not, but some have independent travel insurance they can offer and will help out an existing client.

Not uncommon for injury due to the competition not to be covered in normal travel policies, it's really for accidents and not for when you participate in something that might subject you to an increased risk of injury, you would need a separate add on coverage for something like that. Doesn't his league or school have that type of coverage?

I am no insurance expert, but I know Travelex travel insurance is well regarded and I have used them for years for clients. They have some add on plans for "family" and "adventure", not sure if student (I assume he is a student) soccer competitions would be covered for injury, best to call them and ask, 1-800-228-9792 for Travelex questions. Your other concerns can all be covered with most of their "Select" or "Max" policies, but not with their "Basic".

Other popular travel insurance companies may have similar plans, I'm just most familiar with Travelex. Be aware that with most companies you have to purchase the trip insurance within xxx days of making a deposit or buying airline tickets for things like terrorism or pre existing medical conditions to be covered at all.
