We have rented DVC points many many times and loved it. We have never purchased travel insurance.
We will be renting DVC points for our December 22 trip.
With Covid we have decided to look into travel insurance.

I read about square mouth on a thread to get different travel insurance quotes.
I just called them and the agent told me point rentals are never covered in the travel insurance industry .
He said because the value of points is arbitrary there is no way it will be covered.

Does anyone have any experience with having purchased travel insurance for rented DVC points and having had to use it?
Thanks so much

Since people are often recommending travel insurance for DVC rentals, it must be a thing. Perhaps you need to ask a different question. Rather than insure vacation points, insure the dollar amount of the rent that you are paying. For example, if you are paying $3500 to rent a stay, ask to cover $3500 for the room charge/rental charge. Have a contract that reads the same way.

I have never read a successful story of someone filing a claim against travel insurance for a dvc rental. Yes, lots of people buy travel insurance for these rentals, but I have never heard of one actually getting paid out on a claim. If someone has I’d sure love them to jump into this thread and post what trip insurance company they used. This is one of the downsides of renting dvc points.

There are massive threads from 2020 where people talked about their experience with renting points (both the owners and the renters). I don't recall anyone having success with getting paid back by insurance, but you could browse the threads and see if anyone did. I don't have a link, but just search and you're sure to find these threads.

I've traveled numerous times through COVID, including right now while I'm sitting in Animal Kingdom Lodge posting this reply. I haven't found COVID to be an issue with travel, so unless you're visiting from overseas, I don't see how it would be a factor in your travel to warrant insurance at this point.

You have been fortunate. Many people get sick from COVID and some even need hospitalization. The only difference between insuring trips against COVID vs. other illnesses is that many policies specifically exclude it from coverage (now sure how it might have changed now that we are almost 2 years into this pandemic). I supposed if you never got insurance on any trip, then you may not feel the need to obtain coverage that covers COVID.

You're probably using "many" loosely. I just returned from WDW on Tuesday evening and I'm fairly certainly a tiny fraction of the people there with me are going to become a COVID case.

I have never made a claim nor purchased travel insurance for a DVC rental. However, I did call one of the companies (I think it was Travel Guard) last year to ask if they would cover a DVC rental. I was told that they would cover the rental. For a claim, they would need to see the contract and proof of payment. Whether or not they would include COVID coverage would depend upon the terms of the policy that was chosen.

My concern isn’t specifically covid. It’s that I have kids and kids get sick (Flu, RSV, stomache virus, whatever). I’d really like to rent points from another owner for an upcoming trip but I’d also really like to find a travel insurance plan that actually covers this in case one of my kids gets sick right before the trip. Since I can find no report of anyone anywhere ever actually successfully putting in a claim (despite websites like Davids recommending travel insurance), I guess that travel insurance reallly doesn’t cover points rentals.

Not for your family then, necessarily, but the exact quote from the original post was "With Covid we have decided to look into travel insurance." That would have made sense at the onslaught of the pandemic when we didn't have a clue about what was going on and society lost its collective mind over locking themselves indoors and sanitizing the insides of their microwave ovens. Now that we have a handle on things and see that far fewer people have had Covid than have not, I simply cannot see Covid being a factor in purchasing travel insurance.

I honestly don’t remember reading here from renters who filed claims and were successful.

That does not mean people were not but just that reports haven’t been shared.

Honestly, it may be tough to find it. All you can do is decide if it’s worth the chance to rent and buy a policy and hope for the best.

Or go with a cash stay and know you have strong cancellation polices. It is one of the reasons we never rented. Too risky.

Perhaps renting DVC points isn't the way for you to go. If you book a resort directly through WDW, particularly a room-only reservation (as opposed to a package), they have excellent cancellation policies.

I agree with @Sandisw's post just above.

I’m just going to have to add on more points to my own contact I suppose….

We rented points for a trip in September 2017 and purchased travel insurance through AIG. Our trip was canceled because of a hurricane and we received a full reimbursement from AIG. It was very low hassle to file the claim. I had to submit receipts, a copy of the rental policy showing that it was non-refundable, and a copy of our CC statement showing payment.
I'm not sure how it would go with a cancellation due to covid, but you should call and ask about it.
