Trip insurance for offsite? Need help ASAP!

We are strongly considering booking a condo on Florida Sun Vacation Homes website for a condo in WH. I'm very concerned that the refund policy is horrible! It costs $250 to reserve (non-refundable) and the full amount is due 6 weeks from arrival (also non-refundable within 6 weeks of arrival). So if for some reason we need to cancel (even though it's unlikely), we would be out the full amount for the 8 days we are staying.

Can anyone recommend trip insurance for just our lodging? We are driving in so will be okay there. We need to book as soon as possible but I'm nervous about losing the deposit so I wanted to line up the trip insurance first.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I tried searching the forums but couldn't find any info addressing just insuring the lodging.

Here is a site I found recently. It allows you to out in information specific to your trip and provides you with quotes from a list of companies to choose from. I haven't bought yet, but will be soon and plan to use this site.

This is also the site I use for trip insurance.

I checked the plan I will be using and it does say :
These policies are designed for travelers going on a single trip. They can be used for Cruises, Tours, Flights, House Rentals and a world of other trip types.

So check the package type you are purchasing to see if it says something similar.

I know some people feel trip insurance is a waste of money. I say I HOPE it's just a waste of money. I'd rather take our trip... but, things happen. And if something does happen, I want to know that I'd get reimbursed and still be able to take the trip another time.

Have you looked at other townhouses or condos a WH? A lot of times if you book directly thru an owner you wont have those kind of nonrefundables. Our policy was $200 down - completely refundable up until 30 days prior, and then still 100% if it is re-rented, otherwise, they keep a percentage. Its worth looking around, instead of paying for trip insurance if thats the only thing you were to use it on.

All of the owners we've dealt with have stiff cancellation policies. You usually have to pay the remainder of your rental at least 30 days in advance ( most of the time it's 60 days). If you cancel within 30 days no refunds. Better to be safe than sorry. I wouldn't want my refund to be dependent on whether the owner was able to re-rent the home to someone else.
We use insuremytrip also but be sure you have a rental contract. Read the requirements for the particular insurance company you choose.

Not to get off topic too much but... I looked at this site as well and the about 50 -100 different policies available made my head spin. Has anyone looked these over and found what gives the best coverage at the best price. I know it can be kind of subjective, but good basic coverage.

We used Insuremytrip.com and the Travelex policy (Their travelex plus option) but we were going on a cruise as well. This worked for us BUT I knew we were traveling out of hurricane season.

If you are traveling during hurricane season and you think it may be an issue for you, then you might want to look at CSA travel - when I last checked they cover for hurricanes. Hurricanes are very unusual in Orlando, but not impossible - it is more likely to impact your travel to/from the area than to actually have a hurricane in Orlando.

I agree - my head was spinning too with the quote they emailed me. I need to call back and get some help understanding it! Does anyone know if it is possible to just have insurance on your lodging?

Florida Sun Vacation Homes offers cancellation insurance as well. It is 5% of the total cost of your contract, and covers you for cancellation up to 3 days in advance. I think you will still lose the $250 deposit, but you would get the rest back. In our case it was about $38 so I took the insurance.

Thank you so much!!! This is the perfect example of why I love these boards! That was exactly what I was looking for, and a great price! I had looked all over the website for anything regarding cancellation insurance and it was nowhere to be found on the website, so if you hadn't mentioned it I may not have booked with them.

By the way, how was your experience with this company? Their windsor hills listings are beautiful, everything looks really new with beautiful decor and upgraded furniture and plasma tv.
