Kind of a complicated situation that I am trying to make easier. We are looking into purchasing trip insurance for a 3-family land and sea trip.

The land portion will be covered by my DVC points, so that part, I am not too terribly concerned with.

The cruise portion, has/will be paid using Disney gift cards, which I have purchased. However, the other two families have/will be paying me back their portion of the cruise. Each family will be responsible for their own airfare.

The only other significant expenses will be ground transportation. That will likely be paid by one party, and then paid back a portion by the other two families. Not certain on that just yet.

I am just trying to think of whatever paperwork will be required to submit to the insurance (if worst case scenario came up and we have to use it), and the easiest way to purchase it. Should each family purchase their own insurance policy based on their expenses? Should we do one combined insurance policy? How difficult would it be to submit multiple different purchases under one policy? I guess I assume that if all the people are listed under one policy, then any purchase by any family member, would be covered, as long as they are on the policy?

I recommend each family obtain their own travel insurance. You can suggest what vendor you use, but they should each obtain their own plan that fits the needs of their family.

I agree with lanejudy. Each family should purchase their own insurance. I would call the insurance vendor or Disney Cruise Line first before booking the cruise to verify what paperwork would be needed by each family member. I suspect that each family member might need to book their own cruise in order to file a claim against the insurance if needed. I just cancelled a cruise coming up in May due to unforeseen circumstances. I was in the 50% penalty so I am only getting 50% back from Disney excluding the cost of the insurance. Since I used the travel insurance offered by Disney the insurance company already had my reservation number and will work with Disney Cruise Line directly to verify the cancelation and the amounts refunded by Disney. I should get the remainder back from the insurance co but I would also receive some type of future cruise credit for amounts not refunded by the insurance co.

If each family books their own cruise you could have them reimburse you for the gift cards in advance and let them use them to pay towards the cruise.

I'm guessing that if I did that, I should put the major expense under my name for the cruise part? Instead of trying to divvy up the cruise expenses?

I should also add that the separate cabins are listed under each individual family but they were paid all out of one pot. Not sure if that will matter.

Yeah unfortunately we are just too far along for that. We had a cruise credit to be used, and the cruise we have booked....if we cancel, and re-book, the price would be much higher.

In fact, I have found only one insurance company that will insure us, since we are far after the 15-20 days booking window. (We booked months ago)

As I said above....the bookings themselves were done individually. They have just been all been paid by one person, out of one pot. Not sure if that works in our favor, as far as the individual bookings go. Not sure if the insurance looks at HOW the booking was paid, or just whose name the booking is in.

The "value" of the trip -- or the amount it costs -- needs to be correctly noted with each reservation/individual. If you want to "own" the insurance policy for multiple parties, I strongly suggest you reach out to a third-party insurance broker to discuss the specifics of that. Try starting with one of the online "trip insurance comparison sites" (Google that ;)) and pick one or two policies to contact directly.

I know the pandemic cancellations created quite a crazy financial mess with initial reservations and rebookings and credits. But I'm not sure if you are saying you now need to cancel (again) a cruise that was booked on FCC?
