Trip insurance for Disney trip?

We have a trip planned for next month. I follow some Disney Cruise groups and trip insurance is a common discussion (and we purchased it for our last cruise). Does anybody do this for their park trip? We are flying Southwest and it worries me a little with the issues they have been having. Thank you!

I did not do insurance. I don’t do insurance for most things to be honest, unless there was something in my life that was up in the air during my trip

I would not buy it for a Disney trip. A cruise is different because there is the potential to lose all of your money if you cancel close to your departure date

I would check the terms on your airline reservation, etc., but my general inclination is not to buy insurance for a parks trip. I bought insurance for my cruise (and would again) because if you miss the ship you're out a lot of money otherwise, and I did for an overseas trip because it the coverage I got included health insurance...but for a domestic Disney parks trip I'm less concerned about it.

Travel insurance for a Disney trip does not cover problems with the airline as far as I know.

I think it may depend on what policy you go with and who you buy it from. When I bought trip insurance in the past it did cover costs of rebooking, etc. caused by missed flights.

We always buy it. A Disney trip is so expensive that we think it's money well spent in case someone gets sick last minute, etc. I believe that Disney's covers airfare, too, but I don't remember for sure since it has been a while since I read through the terms.

Do you have a package that has to be paid in full well in advance? Or a room only reservation? I would never do travel insurance for a Disney trip, but we do room only reservations and have tickets separate. The tickets can always be used later (yes, I know new tickets are date based, but the value can be applied to new dates) and the room can be cancelled with no penalty up until 5 days out, and even if you cancel after that, you are only out the deposit. Even if we did a package, the way cancellation rules work for those, I don't think I'd do travel insurance. I really only have done travel insurance for one of two reasons. Either I'm traveling overseas, so I need it for the health coverage or I'm doing some kind of travel where a large expense, like accommodation, has to be paid in full up front with zero cancellation or reschedule policy.

I bought an annual trip insurance policy for like $300 and it covers any travel we do throughout the year, including all my business travel A great peace of mind!

this is what I do too, except the cost is half what you pay and it is linked to my health insurance. Travel insurance covers things like lost or damaged luggage delayed flights as well as cancellations. emergencies and medical issues.

I just renew mine each year and then I know that I can travel as much as I want and I dont have to worry.

For cruises and other trips that require non-refundable payments, yes. For WDW trips, no. My own medical insurance covers those needs and, after 40+ trips, I've never encountered travel delays that would have amounted to more than what the insurance would cost. With WDW packages and room-only reservations, you can always change your dates without incurring penalties, so no money lost there. Technically, there is a $50 change fee with packages changed within 30 days, but that's still cheaper than buying insurance. My mantra for WDW trips is change dates over cancelling completely. At the end of the day, as long as you cancel a package 2 days or more out, you are only out $200.

Your CC (credit card) may offer some form of insurance - many CC offer some kind of travel insurance but you need to check their limits - most are painfully low. We travel extensively both domestically and internationally and we never purchase expensive trip insurance packages. Instead we have one the best travel CC on the market - the Chase Sapphire Preferred (there is also the Reserve). It has up to $20000 of insurance which is sufficient for most trips and wonderful customer service. Their auto rental rider makes them the primary coverage for a rental so your personal auto insurance would be secondary. No international fees. [Edited to add: CC travel insurance (and some others)] do NOT include Medical insurance however and we always buy a Medical Only insurance rider from Allianz insurance for international travel. They are the cadillac of travel insurance and have some of the best prices around. Many of the insurance packages you purchase are underwritten by Allianz and you are paying for the middleman. If you want travel insurance and your CC doesn't provide sufficient coverage go to Allianz's website and grab a quote. (You will have to call them directly for a Medical Only quote - website has a glitch and you can read about it but it is only quoting complete travel packages).

We buy trip insurance for cruises and out of the country trips.

Ok thanks! This is so helpful. That’s what I was thinking too but wanted to make sure there wasn’t something I was forgetting about.

Absolutely. Partly because we're from Canada and we get medical insurance with that. I'd hate to get sick in the US. It also pays out for lost luggage, family members to visit if you end up in hospital, and costs related to trip insurance (which includes reimbursement of hotel fees paid, anything non-refundable, and emergency flights home). Costs us about $45 for the two of us for a week. Well worth it for us.

We do purchase the insurance because we go during hurricane season. If I were going from March thru August I probably wouldn't but traveling from the NE means hurricanes and snowstorms from Sept thru Feb. I would always purchase for a cruise.

I normally get a package that I pay for in advance and it has graduating penalties the closer you cancel to the trip so we always get insurance. Better to loose 150.00 than an entire trip.

If I had a room only reservation that could be cancelled 5 days out, I would forego the insurance.

My parents get insurance for everything ever since they had to worry about my elderly grandmother (now themselves). They mostly cruise and don’t ever go to Disney except with us (when we pay). I had cancer 8 years ago; pulmonary embolism last year, etc. We also have a teenage athlete. Pre-existing riders are my friends. We sometimes choose to take advantage of premier credit card benefits for smaller trips.

I wish I could link, our insurance coverage only covers us in our surrounding area. The joys of being self employed and private plan insurance!

We have a yearly Allianz travel insurance that does include medical, that’s the main reason we got it. Our personal plan only covers us in our county. You mentioned Allianz does NOT include medical but wanted to let you know it actually does.

I'm so glad these posts are addressing the medical part of travel insurance - it's something most folks don't take into account! I actually was talking about credit card travel insurance that does not include medical (I can see where it is confusing - I'll edit for clarity) - Allianz does have wonderful travel insurance that includes medical but our CC travel insurance is equal to that offered by Allianz except there is no medical so it is cheaper to just purchase the medical only from Allianz. I know there are a lot of folks out there who don't know how important it is to have a medical insurance rider when leaving the country and that some travel insurance includes medical but many do not. I have many friends who assume their CC insurance is all they need and are shocked when I explain there is no medical insurance - travel insurance is something most everyone thinks about but the medical part is not. To clarify - we only purchase an Allianz medical rider when we travel internationally.
