Trip Insurance AFTER final payment

I've never purchased travel insurance before for any trips i've taken, and now i'm becoming even more anxious for not getting it after reading about accidents on the ships/excursions.

I asked my TA about purchasing trip insurance, even though i've already made final payment, and I guess I can't buy it.

However, a lot of DISer's have recommended tripinsurancestore so I just decided to check them out, and under their FAQ's section, it says, "You can get travel insurance up until the day before you travel for Travel Guard, Travelex, Travel Insured and TravelSafe or the day of departure for CSA."

So now i'm confused. My TA says no, but according to this, it says I can?

Can anyone help me with this? :goodvibes

You can still get travel insurance. You cannot get it with DCL after you have made final payment. Sounds like your agent doesn't sell insurance as most do not but you can also get it on your own at www.insuremytrip.com. I usually get it outside of DCL as I can then add my own air costs and other costs into the mix so we are fully covered. Hope that helps!

I often buy from insuremytrip.com also. I have bought many weeks after final payment due date, just by accidentally forgetting. We don't have an pre-existing conditions so I feel like up until FPDD, I can easily cancel with no penalty so I don't rush out to buy ins as soon as I book.

Even with all the insurance companies/policies offered through IMT, I haven't seen one yet that will cover PECs unless you buy the ins with 10-15 days after initial deposit. Varies with each company.

I've never needed to file a claim and hope I never do but my parents had to once (ins via TA but not thru cruise line) when their return flight was cancelled due to incoming snow storm in Philly area. They were stuck in Ft. Lauderdale for 2 more days. Hotels there aren't cheap to begin with (compared to MCO area) and scrambling for a place to stay didn't help get them a better deal. Their ins covered the hotel, food & laundry expenses. (Think post-vacation suitcases full of dirty clothes w/nothing to wear.)
They were glad to have ins since it came to around $1000.

Wonderful! Thanks you guys!

I was also checking out IMT and it brought A LOT of different options. I have no idea what to choose, what's worth it, etc..

We're not flying so I don't need any air insurance. What do you folks suggest?

ETA: There is only 2 adults with no pre-existing conditions

Well, look at what's a priority for you. Medical coverage? Medical evacuation? (btw, this can bankrupt a family which runs around $60k so I'm told.) Cancellation? Baggage delay? Since your not flying, flight insurance wouldn't interest you.

I search for "packages" only then sort according to price. Then I put a compare check in the cheapest 5 or 6 plans and compare them all. The coverages vary and sometimes I can find a much better plan for say $2 more. That's why I compare several. Their comparison chart makes it very easy to compare.

insuremytrip.com has a toll-free number, which I've used a few different times, and the people there are very knowledgable in the various policies and products they sell, and they can help you to choose the right policy. Have a great trip. :)

I second this. I had no clue also and the rep helped me pick out a plan.

I get mine from the Trip Insurance Store. They deal with only 5 companies, but they are the ones I chose even when buying from Insuremytrip.com.

I'm not really sure what would be a priority since i've never purchased before so I guess i'll do my research. But based off your suggestion i'm DEFINITELY going to be looking into medical evaluation. So thanks for this tip!

Okay, I also wasn't sure if I needed to buy each thing separately or as a package, but you verified that for me right now. THANK YOU!

Oh wonderful! If I still have questions after I research, i'll be giving them a call. Thanks!

I wonder if prices vary IMT to TIS....off to research!

Again, thanks everyone for all your help! From every trip here on out, i'll definitely be purchasing trip insurance. Some of the stories i've read/heard about are sad, and I don't want to be caught unprepared in case a situation arises.

I really recommend calling the trip insurance store, I have had extremely good service from them. They specialize in insurance and unlike insure my trip will not just read back policy wording to you but help interpret it. That's what lead me to them to begin with, when I needed help.

They also provide excellent pre-trip info for preparedness should a claim need to be filed.

Look at the policies, not just the companies. For instance, Travel Guard basic and travel guard protect/assist may only differ by $3, but the Protect Assist policy covers a lot more. In addition, some companies give one free child policy with each parent policy purchased.

Yes, you can definitely buy coverage after you are paid in full--just not thru DCL. And if my TA didn't know that, I'd probably look for a different TA!

The weird thing is, is that my TA is through Dreams Unlimited :confused3 yeah, a little weird that she told me I couldn't purchase insurance, unless she thought I meant directly through Disney :confused3

I got my trip insurance through the trip insurance store and talked to Steve. He was very helpful and answered all of my questions. I told him that TIS came highly recommended through several folks on the DIS, and he said, "Oh yes, NancyIL from the boards." :)

I feel much more relieved now that I have trip insurance. I can go on my trip now and not have to worry about falling and breaking a bone, etc so thanks everyone for all the help and recommendations! :goodvibes

Not sure if this was already mentioned, but unless you purchase the travel insurance within 10 days of originally booking the cruise, you will not be covered for any pre-existing conditions. I know this from all the years we have purchased and the couple of times we waited too long and couldn't get coverage for pre-existing.

The number of days from the date of your first trip payment varies by the insurance policy, and I've seen some as high as 30 days. There are a few companies that offer the waiver of pre-existing conditions if you purchase the insurance within 24 hours of making your final trip payment, such as some policies from CSA and HTH Worldwide.

I'm referring to insurance companies we have come to depend on who have good reputations and cover air evac. We need pre-existing, so missing that window is a problem for us. Some of the other insurance companies have a lot of fine print that won't cover certain circumstances EVEN if they say they cover pre-existing. Learned THAT one the hard way. These companies tend to have their own "version" of pre-existing that may not be what you think it means. Over ten years and many situations, we've done so much research I could write a book :rotfl::surfweb: insuremytrip.com has the ability to do comparisons between many policies and that can really be helpful.
