with MONO! I didn't even know 7 year olds could get mono! Okay, so I need a lot of advice and help with my many scenarios. First of all the doctor felt that she would be better in two weeks, but I am worried that she might not be. I have a lot of options and scenarios going thru my mind:

1. Keep the June reservation and hope for the best. She might be fatigued so we could rent a stroller, (she is very small) but will probably be through the worst of it. A different trip, definitely not commando, with a lot of relaxing times.

2. Cancel the trip. Points will go into holding. We have a February use year...but think I borrowed from 2014 some points. How does that factor in? I know I have 60 days to use the points. Is that 60 days from the date of the June reservation or from the cancellation day? Not sure about that. So that means another vacation in the summer, probably the first week of August. How does that compare to the second week of June? Am I right on this? We have never canceled before. Also, would anything even be available that week? I did look online this morning, and OKW and SSR are still available now. Will they be in a couple weeks if we wait to cancel?

3. Exposure to mono occurs 4-8 before symptoms present themselves. So are we all just ticking time bombs waiting for this to erupt? I know my son ate after her a couple of weeks ago. I would hate for him to develop mono on a trip. Should we just rent the reservation and skip our summer trip? (We have one planned in the fall as well.)

4. Finally, my DH wants to just keep the initial reservation and when we get close to the trip, decide then. What is the latest you can cancel for the points to go into holding?

Okay, I think that is all the questions I have right now. My mind is racing. Any help and advice you can give is GREATLY appreciated! Thank you! :goodvibes

You can use points in holding to book a vacation 60 days out. So if you can still go in August, you could book in June. If you cancel from 30 days out to the day before, your points go into holding. If you cancel the day of your trip, you forfeit your points. If you cancel 31 days or more out, you bank your points, use them when ever you can. But borrowed points would be lost at the end of the use year (Jan 31, 2014). Or you could offer the reservation for sale if it is a good one.

I would cancel and plan on a vacation later when everybody is feeling better, you have until the end of January. Of course that depends on your schedules and you might have to take any resort that is available.

:earsboy: Bill

My daughter had mono on our WDW trip in 2005 when she was 8. We rented a stroller and she did fine. It was April and not terribly hot though. Our biggest concern was if she would infect others, but the doctor said she could shed the virus for up to a year, so the best thing to do is just make sure she's washing her hands good after eating and such.

The younger kids are when they get it, the milder the symptoms usually are. Kids younger than 4 or 5 sometimes don't show any symptoms at all. Many adults have been exposed earlier in life and already have antibodies against it. Your son may have already had it too, you can't know for sure without testing him. We found out later that our younger daughter had it previously, and we never even suspected it.

Since you go frequently, you could always reschedule if it would make you feel better. Our trip when our daughter was sick was our "once in a lifetime" trip that we had been planning for nearly 2 years. That was before we became addicted and bought DVC! I guess thats a pretty good indication of how great our trip was since we haven't been able to stop going since!

Sorry to hear about your DD.

Children will often recover fairly quickly from mono. Our daughter had a severe case when she was 7 and was pretty well back to normal within 2 weeks. Some of the effects can last for several weeks. As long as your physician feels she would not be in danger for your trip, I'd hang on to the reservation. Your physician can also advise about other family members getting it, but it is not a highly contagious illness - usually transmitted by saliva.

As long as you cancel by the day before, the points will be returned to your account as Holding Points - usuable within 60 days of arrival for another reservation. The only situation where you would lose the points is if you cancel on the arrival date (or later).

Good luck! I'm sure your daughter will recover quickly. :)

I would cancel just because I've gone through mono and it's no picnic.
Keep in mind that everyone's experience with mono is different. They could recover within 2 weeks or it could take months.
Mine took a month before I could function normally. My doctor think I should have been able to work as usual and refuses to give me FMLA. But I couldn't even open my eyes for more than 2hrs a day for at least a week.

Of course you are the one who can judge the severity of her mono.
But I think trying to go might end up being miserable if she is still not feeling better or someone else ended up with it.

I'm so sorry your DD is not feeling well. Mono sucks big time.
:(

Okay, those are all good options...thanks so much for explaining that to me! :)

I didn't realize that I had all the way to the end of January. I was thinking it was 60 days from the previously scheduled trip. Thanks so much for educating me! :goodvibes

Yes, I feel guilty that I am upset about changing travel plans/canceling when we are so blessed that we get to go twice a year. I think it is just you do the countdown ticker and get all excited about school getting out....I just hate for her to be sick and miss out on summer vacation too. Also, we could go August but we are afraid of the crowds and the heat. But thank you for all the extra information and empathy. :goodvibes

I am hoping my daughter recovers as quickly as yours! ;)

Okay, I just want to double check on the holding points. They will be good until January 31st right? I don't know why that is such a difficult concept for me! :)

:(

I also had it in college and it was awful! Now DD's doctor says that kids seem to recover faster than adults, but I am still concerned about the heat and the enlarged spleen issue. I mean could a ride hurt her? Or would a water slide? Decisions, decisions. . .

Thanks for the get well wishes and info! I really appreciate it! :)

I would cancel and go at a later time. Some...or none...of the rest of you could also be getting it, and you'd have NO idea of how long you'd be struggling with the symptoms, etc.

Three members of my family had Mono. (That is, by the way, a FOUR-LETTER WORD in my book, by all stretches of the imagination.) My DD had it when she was 12. She's a skinny-Minnie, and suffered for MONTHS. My DS had it at a different time (didn't get it from HER) years later. Other than the spleen thing, he was good as new within a month.

My DH had it...at the ripe "young" age of 50...at the same time as my DS. He's still suffering from after-effects (basically little immunity to anything contageous)...and it's been just about 10 years.

I hope she has a mild case and is back to normal quickly!

Yes, mono is a four letter word! :sad2:

I lean toward your thinking....canceling until August. DHS is still wanting to wait it out and see how she is. We have nothing to lose by waiting a bit. I don't think SSR is going to sell out for August in the next two weeks.

You do have nothing to lose by waiting until just before the reservation before making the decision. Your points going into holding means that they are good until the end of the UY (Jan 31 in your case), but you can only book 60 days into the future. So you couldn't use them to book in August now, anyway.

Yes, you are right! I'm not freaking out anymore. :lmao:

If nothing else, this experience has taught me about points in holding. I now understand that process. :goodvibes

I don't think August is a terrible time to go. You might need to plan differently and enjoy your resort a bit in terms of enjoying the pool in the heat of the afternoon. Maybe catch the fireworks from the top of BLT instead of braving the crowds to get a spot at the MK etc. We like catching a movie in DTD during the afternoon too. Or try the movie night at your resort. I have had mono and was at the tail end of it on one trip. We still had a nice trip but it wasn't a "go all day in the parks" kind of trip. One trip we stayed at Kidani and spent 3 nights enjoying the cultural programs at the resorts. I know for some that would be a huge waste of a vacation but it was one of my favorite trips.

I missed 4 months of high school with mono. The bad part is, if you try to rush it, you will make her more sick. You have no way of knowing how fast she will get her white count back to normal.

If you have a flexible schedule and are not very picky about which resort you book or about splitting your stay, I would cancel and try to book for August or even later in the year. You have until Jan. 31 to use the points, but can only book a trip 60 days out. Obviously, there will be some availability issues, especially if you are trying to book Thanksgiving or Christmas.

My DD had mono when she was 10 and recovered very quickly. She seemed completely fine after 2 weeks and no one else in our family got sick. Many kids recover quickly. You could wait until a few days prior to your trip to make your final decision. You and your doctor will know what's best for your family. Good luck making your decision, and I hope your daughter feels better soon!

I am thinking that my DD is going to be a lot like yours! She still has a slight fever, but she is quickly getting better every day. Her main issues are the glandular swelling and sore throat, but her energy level has quickly returned. As a matter of fact, she is hyper and stir crazy! ( We know however that the Florida heat and walking might still be taxing, but we are thinking it will be doable.) I am still concerned about one of us getting it though so we are going to wait until the day before to decide.

WDW isn't going away and even if she is feeling better, her resistance will be low and you are exposing her to every disease known to man at WDW, the melting pot of bacteria and viruses.

I would reschedule.
