We would love to step back in time and go to a place on the beach (or water of any type) that is quaint and quiet. Something right out of a movie. We would love the town to be small, so small that we could walk to the restaurants or shopping. Does such a place exist? Thanks so much!

Check out Apalachicola, FL. Quaint little fishing town, with shops, lots of great restaurants, all within walking distance. Its about a 10 min drive to the beaches at St. George Island. Its kind of like stepping back in time.

Chatham, Mass. Nice town nice beaches, small town. They have a baseball and they don't charge for the game just pass the bucket during the game and people throw in what they can. They have an area where they play music outdoors and people lay down blankets to watch. At night people stroll up and down the street in and out of the shops. There's also mini golf not far away and whale watching. Some nice small motels to stay at and houses to rent. There's a nice little beach for little ones where the water is calm, and another beach for riding the waves and lighthouse beach with a small lighthouse with a nice view. A nice relaxing place. Linda :)

For back in time, I'd go with Mackinac Island... No cars allowed.

For quaint beach town... Kure Beach, NC. Not much for shopping or restaurants though.

Munising, MI (in the UP). 10 miles east of Munising, there's a beach at Au Train. A mile long of sandy beach. We went up there for 5-6 summers, and never on the beach was there more than 10 people. It's at the intersection of the Au Train River and Lake Superior.

We always stayed in Au Train (cabin rental -- very rustic). There are websites: http://www.autrain.com/ and http://www.munising.org/

I would suggest Edisto Island, SC. There isn't a hotel on the island, and we walked to a couple different restaurants. It is such a nice non-commercial beach!

Camden, ME is a beautiful sleepy New England town. No beach...but a beautiful harbor and lots of schooners that you can sail for a couple days on. We went out on the Lewis R French...www.schoonerfrench.com ..it was a wonderful experience.

We'll be going back next summer. We'd go this year but our schedule is just too busy.

Let us know what you decide. I'm curious. :)

Ocracoke Island, NC (Outer Banks) would fit that description!! You have to take a ferry to get to it and it has a village type feel to it. We stayed at "The Castle" and they provided bikes that we could ride around from shop to shop on. It's really a lovely and unique community!!

Seaside, FL (where The Truman Show was filmed). Small, quaint, beautiful, amazing beaches...

We leave the first day to get groceries (about a mile away) and park it once we return. You can walk or ride your bike to their downtown area, beach, pool, etc. I would guess the entire area is about a half mile squared. It also butts up against Watercolor and Seagrove Beach in case you do want to get in your car for more food options.

Love it there!

I had always wanted to go to Mackinac Island and finally made it there last year. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. Too touristy.

I've been to Edisto Island, which is mentioned above. Not much to do there and it was cold in March. We did have a resort unit where we could sit on our bed and watch dolphins play in the water. Very cool.

I spent a couple of weeks on Amelia Island, just north of Jacksonville, last Fall and found it pretty peaceful. The Residence Inn was a short walk to the beach and there were a couple of nice restaurants right there.
