Question for my DIS friends....does anyone know of trip cancellation insurance to cover just the cost of the trip not the medical expense part? We planned a trip this summer and may need to cancel if we find out my son needs surgery. He broke his wrist in April while camping and has been in a cast since. He broke the scaphoid bone and its one of those situations where they won't know if it requires surgery until it heals. He's going on 12 weeks in a cast and on July 16th we go back for the news. If it hasn't healed by then he goes in for surgery. My hotel reservations are non refundable and the airline tickets cannot be re used because they were part of a companion fare deal. I'd like to at least be able to get the cost of those back if we can't go. Thank you.... You guys are always so helpful!

Most trip insurance policies will reimburse you if you need to cancel for medical reasons. However,, some will have restrictions for pre-existing conditions if you purchase the insurance after your trip has been paid in full.

Check with the CC that you used for payment on your hotel and tickets. Some CCs automatically provide trip insurance for cancellations. I called Chase Sapphire when I was looking into coverage for the cruise that we just took. The card covered us in case we needed to cancel for medical reasons for anyone in the immediate family (we were mainly concerned about our parents) or if our trip was interrupted for a number of reasons.

As it turned out, I ended up purchasing a medical insurance policy that covered us for any personal medical emergencies while traveling since we would be out of the country. I bought it through an-online-trip-insurance-company-that-we-are-apparently-not-allowed-to-name-on-this-board .com. They have several types of trip insurance and they are very good at helping you decide what you need for your specific situation.

Typically you would have needed to insure the trip within 0 - 30 days of your original booking to get any of the benefits (the different companies vary on that). How long ago did you book the first portion of the trip would be the question then?

I suggest you Google trip insurance comparison sites and you'll find a couple of good ones that offer a variety of travel insurance policies. Check them out, but then CALL directly to discuss your specific questions. You are going to need a policy with a pre-existing condition waiver -- unfortunately at this point your son's condition is now considered a "pre-existing condition" meaning it existed prior to purchasing the insurance policy. It may be possible to purchase such a policy/waiver, but it is likely to cost more; balance the cost of the insurance policy vs. actual loses you would incur. If you have a WDW reservation, sometimes they'll work with you to move it out to a new date rather than cancel and lose the funds. Airlines may allow you to carry a credit minus a minor fee.

Good luck! I hope your son's healing doesn't require surgery and you get to enjoy your vacation!

Thanks.....

I just purchased the hotel and air last week. The hotel was a timeshare getaway that is not refundable. Two of my airline tickets were companion tickets so I don't think I can change those to a later date if needed. Why does the insurance company need to know about his broken wrist? Can't I just not disclose that info, they don't even ask. The doctor is optimistic the bone will heal but there is still that chance.

Trip insurance companies don't ask you to disclose preexisting conditions when you make your purchase but they will certainly investigate claims. One of the questions that you would be asked if you were to file a claim would be the date that the injury occurred. At that point, you would have to reveal that he broke his wrist prior to the date that you purchased the insurance and they will deny your claim.

If you make a claim, you are going to have to disclose the details including when the original injury occurred.

You maybe be required to produce medical eligibility since that's what you're claiming. Each provider has their own policies, I recommend you read those carefully before selecting one for this particular trip but select one soon before you completely loose out. Also airlines will work with you that's been my experience. Best of luck!
