Our third child was somewhat of a surprise quite a pleasant one but altered our plans for our trip the first week of February. Having miles to use by summer of this year we decided to still go taking him at seven weeks old. I know some of your responses are going to be you would never do it I am in ICU nurse for 20 years so I am in tuned with vaccinations etc. I would really appreciate if anyone would share any of their stories for taking an infant at this age

Quite frankly I am most concerned about the airplane and the sun. As far as the airplane Is concerned I was going to keep him close to me I am nursing I also was going to cover him with a blanket that is breathable any other tips for keeping him safe on the plane as far as the circulation of the air being poor? Our flight is only 2 1/2 hours not too bad

As far as the sun is concerned I know no sunscreen prior to six months as this is my third child do you think he will be too hot when in the carrier and in the car seat if he has a footed pajama outfit on he probably will be too hot but I would preferred to keep him covered and not take any risks any thoughts on this? There is a car seat cover that is SPF 55 and breathable I plan on purchasing one of them for when he is in the car seat but he primarily will be in the carrier tied to me

Any help or input would be greatly. Appreciated!! Anyone who is going to respond cancel our trip please refrain as we are not doing so thanks so much and advance!!.

I would not absolutely not use a stroller that needs the car seat attachment. That's way too hot. Babies need to be able to wiggle and have air circulating around them. Find a stroller that reclines flat so that the baby can have some air.

Some strollers have a great shade that will almost completely block out the sun. The City Mini is one, and it comes in a double. It would serve your family well. I haven't had a newborn to put in mine in over 2 years, but I think that the shade usually blocks the sun over their whole bodies at that age. Older ones sometimes have the lower part of their bodies dangling out of the shade a little bit.

Lightweight footed pajamas may be fine if the weather isn't too hot and you keep the baby cool any other way you can (i.e., no car seat, a carrier that isn't too warm, etc.). It's a time of year that definitely won't be cold, but it might not be too hot. They should absolutely be 100% cotton. That will breathe much better than the polyester ones.

I'd talk to your pedi about sunscreen. When my son was little my pedi said that the reason they soon sunscreen is because it isn't tested on babies under 6 months (so it may or may not be bad for them). She said she tended to recommend sunscreen over being in the sun if no other option (like shade or too hot to be covered). Just watch out for reactions and use the non chemical kind.

I'd also say make sure you have a breathable carrier than adds as little heat as possible. A really light weight moby might be good for that, and take into consideration the clothes YOU wear. Also a really good wide brimmed sun hat for both of you would probably be good.

Like pp said I wouldn't do car seat carrier for long. And you could keep baby in a onsie and covered with a really light weight blanket (so it's not actually touching everywhere).

We are going 4/25-5/2 with our 10 and 8 year old and (will be) 15 week old....he was a surprise too, lol! :)

We discussed the trip with our pedi at his 2 month appt yesterday and she very much encouraged it. Furthermore, she said that the recommendation for sunscreen is now 3 months, FYI. :)

We have a City Mini stroller with a huge sun canopy, and I also have a Bebe Au Lait nursing cover, which can double as a sun cover on the stroller, so maybe look into that.

I plan on keeping DS in a Moby wrap on the plane. Luckily, he did have his first round of shots, but there's really nothing you can do about airplane germs...it is what it is. :(

My linen ring sling was the coolest and most convienent carrier - easy to get baby in and out, and modest to nurse with if NIP makes you uncomfortable. We used sakura bloom, but there are a lot you can find for less. I found all of the stretchy wraps to be too hot, and the woven wraps just too much trouble.

Look for a sunscreen that uses blockage instead of chemicals. Zinc Oxide is an example. Use a wide beam hat and shade her as much as possible. I think a sleeper is likely to be much too warm for much of the day. Morning and late evening can still be a bit cooler but mid day can be quite hot, even late April. I agree that babies do not need to be in car seat carries for long periods of time. A nice reclining stroller is necessary. Carrying him close to you will keep other people's hands off him, but not help with the air born germs and I am a pretty firm believer in having babies restrained in their own seat during flights. He's your third so it will be much easier!

We took our kids this past October, when our son was 2 and our daughter was 8 weeks old. I used an Ergo carrier. I liked it because it has the shade that goes right over her head and snaps into place. She tended to keep her arms tucked into the carrier, so I dressed her in short sleeves and cotton pants with socks. When we would take breaks in the shade I would take her socks off to cool her off. I dressed in tank tops as she would make me very sweaty. The one thing I didn't like about the ergo was the infant insert was very hot, but after awhile we ended up not using it with her and she was fine.

When she was in her car seat I had a breathable muslin swaddle blanket covering her. I definitely took advantage of the baby care centers to get her out of the sun, and did go back to the hotel for breaks on some of the really hot days.

The plane ride was really easy. She was on my lap the whole time and just ate and slept.

Have fun!

We took ds at 10 weeks. Target has California baby sunscreen that can be used on newborn. Read about it. Expensive but worked and no skin issues. Biggest plus for us was find a carrier you are both comfortable. I wore him most times hoping on and off rides. need stroller fan. We stayed 10 nights, everyone thought I was crazy but was easy!
