Trick or Treat Night

Maybe I am too old to go out, now, but (like some of you) I really miss when Halloween was on the actual day, no matter if it was the middle of the week. In Milwaukee I was bothered most when they staggered the times on the weekends, and the times were in the middle of the afternoon. Part of the fun was going out at night when the street lights lit the path and wind would rustle the leaves. The small town I grew up in ends Trick-or-treating around 5pm now and I remember it going until 9pm.

Ours is tomorrow from 6-8pm. It's always on Halloween night here. Ironcially, our HS games were tonight this week to accomodate Halloween. The only time, every couple of years they're played on a Thursday.

Is this high school football? High school is not big here, but then again we don't really have any small towns. So like the whole town goes to the game?

Our game was moved this week too! I couldn't figure WHY the game was tonight - lol!

And yes, high school football is HUGE here - everyone goes to the games, and it's even bigger this year as we are undefeated! :cheer2: We're rated second only to Hoover (you know...the Two-A-Days guys...) this year which is unbelievable! It seems it wasn't but a few years ago that we barely won a game. We either have some talented players, a new coach, or maybe both...

Here, trick-or-treating is always on Halloween. We're excited because it's not on a school night this year. I thought places that moved it did so to keep it from being on a school night, but apparently not. :confused3 I'm glad we don't move it, and then the bit about telling people when to stop trick-or-treating? Good grief! I can see not knocking on doors after 10pm, but we don't even start up here until after dark. What fun is trick-or-treating in the daylight?

NEPA checking in and ours was tonight too, kids are already home with 3 huge bags full of candy... Ours is tonight because of football games as well.

If football is so important then why don't they just not schedule a football game on Halloween and play it the day before or after?? If it is that important then people will show up any day of the week the game is played on. I can't see moving a set holiday just because someone didn't think ahead and scheduled a football game on that day. Would they move Christmas day or Thanksgiving because they scheduled a football game for that day??

I agree- we don't have set times here and never have. The BEST was when Halloween fell on the weekends when you were a kid and you started trick or treating around noon and didn't stop until 8 or 9! I remember those years LOL. Next year all the kids here are looking forward to an entire Saturday long of trick or treating!

Ours was last night too. We always have ToT scheduled for the Thursday before Halloween. And guess what time it is? 4-6 -- real great for working parents, right? :sad2:

I honestly think that would be terrible. I have things to do.

Another central PAer here. It was this way in the 70's when I was little. I have no idea what the official reason is but it works. 6-8, done. I'm pretty sure it's not always on Thursday. I know it's never on Fri, Sat or Sun.

Our's is on Halloween, the first time in years... oh did I mention we have a new Mayor!

Trick or Treating for the city of Fort Wayne, is tonight 6-8. The very small housing complex and they did a "community" trick or treating last night.

We have one small town right close to here that has a large number of Amish families and when Halloween falls on Sundays, as a town they don't do trick or treating on Sunday, they do it on Saturday.

Ours is tonight 6-8 pm and is usually on Halloween night but not always. We usually take our son out the night before and drive him around to all our relatives so that we can stay home on Halloween night to pass out candy to the neighborhood kids and anyone else that stops by. People think we are so weird to do that (because it isn't Halloween) but that way DS gets to trick or treat AND answer the door and see the others in costumes.

We always ToT on Halloween. The elementary schools have parades at 2:30, and then the kids start (there are high traffic areas, close to the schools, that start handing out early). There is no set time, but most are done by 9. They are also having trunk and treat at one of the firehouses this year, but I don't know why, since there are droves of kids walking the streets, getting candy the old fashioned way! :confused3

Like I said Sat. games do NOT draw the attendance that Friday night games do. I was in the band for 6 years. I went to EVERY game those years. Trust me Sat games just aren't the same. Its a HUGE money maker for our small schools around here. Honestly I don't know one person who minds going out the day before at all. :confused3 In fact its better for some parents who work weekend shifts. They get to go out with their kids. My friend is a nurse who works F,S,S,M she got to take her kids out last night. Guess its not such a bad thing for some people. :flower3:

Ours was last night in Des Moines and most of the surrounding communities from 6-8. My understanding is that City Council changed TOT night to 30th as several kids were killed in accident while out on Halloween night in late 50s??? I grew up in eastern Iowa and we always went out on 31st to TOT.

Also unique for DSM area is that TOTs have to tell you a joke or sing or do some little trick to "earn" their treat. Even the toddlers will tell us Happy Halloween. My head is still trying to catch up with all of the "why did the chicken cross the roads; why did the ghost, etc. etc stories. After about the first 25-35 kids, the jokes are all running together. The best one though was the 4 girls who came-one was dressed as a record player, and her 3 friends were the dancers. One of them started the record player who provided the "music" and the other 3 sang Margaritavile.
