Triathlon Thread 2009

I got a two piece tri suit from Danskin. It was on sale last year at REI. The material is just like a bathing suit, but more support :thumbsup2
Kohls has NIKE bathing suit / sport tops right now on sale, I was wondering if these had the same support and went to check them out... seems like they did, but I didn't get a chance to try them on (Was in a rush and I need to go back to the store anyway)
I'm bigger on top and find these to have enough support

This is kind of like the top I have

Oh, and you might want deodorant for after the race too.. depends on if you're going out to eat or anywhere but home after the race :)

you can (unless specifically forbidden) bring a balloon to tie on the rack to help you mark it.

I actually bring some fluorescent orange tape and mark the end of the rack that my bike is in with some stripes...helps me find it quickly.

Personally, I'd skip the HR monitor as i wouldn't want to take the time to put it on, but then again I don't really like the darn things!

If you don't want to use PAM, you can also use a spray called Suit Juice. One thing I would add to your list is 2 disposable plastic grocery bags...put your feet in them and you will slide right into the legs of the wetsuit...sounds stupid, works like a champ!

Good luck...gtg, my kids are screaming their heads off.

side note, I was able to get my odometer/speedometer remounted on the rear wheel, so now i can get speed/distance workouts. just got in 19 miles in 65 minutes...not bad, not great.

nice bike Liz!!!

Erika...
Putting more clothes on a wet body after the swim is a CHORE. Wear a jog bra to swim, or one under your swimsuit.

I wear a jog bra, tri shorts, and my race team singlet (close-fitting) for the whole race. No changing necessary, and no adding clothes. Tri shorts are really the way to go.

Liz...nice bike!!

Packing List for me:

Pre-race:
Sunscreen
Water/gatorade
Clif bar (or bagel/banana)--sometimes eaten on the way to race
Towel (SMALL) **Don't be taking up big room in transition with a big towel
Sandals (like Tevas)
Sweats over tri outfit
iPod for some jammin'/zoning
Usually have a trash bag in my backpack for just in case reasons (to put under transition towel if it's wet, or to cover things)

Swim:
tri clothes are already on
Wetsuit
Pam spray
Bodyglide (sometimes--not a huge fan)
Swim cap
Goggles (always bring an extra pair)

Bike:
Bike
Helmet
Race belt with number (sometimes not worn until the run)
Bike shoes
Aerobottle/water bottles
Nutrition--drinks/gels as needed
Spare tires/minimal tool kit--I carry a spare, CO2 inflator with one or two cartridges, tire levers. For short races, I don't carry other tools. Would add an allen wrench for longer.
Pump (I try to pump up tires by the car before going to transition so as to not have extra stuff like the pump laying around taking up space)
Sunglasses

Run:
Shoes
Vaseline (pre-race I line the edges of my shoes by the heel with this so I don't get blisters--I don't wear socks for Sprint and Olympic distance)
Race belt with number
Visor
Any nutrition needed

Post-race:
Fresh shorts to put on and sometimes a cute top. princess:
hairbrush
Wet wipes
back in the sandals

The idea of the plastic bags to get your feet in your wetsuit is a good one...I tend to forget it until race day.

Thought I'd contribute to the list, one of my tricks is a large plastic bowl, which I then fill partially with water from a spigot/fountain/restroom on site. Running from swim to transition can involve grass/dirt/rocks/sand you name it, so I head to my massive impossible to miss Mickey as sorceror's apprentice towel, step in the bowl, step out onto the towel and immediately dry my feet, and then voila, on go the socks (thorlos same ones I run in) and cycling cleats with no problem and nothing extra in my shoes! :thumbsup2

Matt~ What a great idea!!! I'm going to steal that one for my next tri!!

I forgot, I usually bring a small...20 oz or so bottle and fill it with water for the same purpose...i squirt down my feet, dry them with the transition towel and on go the socks.

Take the time to dry your feet...the time you spend drying will be more than saved trying to put socks on wet feet.

Has anyone used the socks that have a little tube for each toe? I saw them at REI yesterday, and wondered if they work as advertised to reduce blisters, or if they are just a gimmick.

Nice blue color on the bike. My first road bike had a triple ring...I swear I am never going back (current cross bike has a double). I use my globe for about a 1/3 of my riding currently and I swear by the nexus (simpler can be better sometimes). Maybe one day for a tri bike...I hear rumors every now and then for one on a MTB but for racing purposes it would have to be very heavy duty. It's warming up here a bit in central TX but last weekend a cold front came in and the gusts got up to 40mph. I seriously sat in my warm house, in my nice warm chair and could hear the wind howling. Then I thought about how much I have accomplished...and dressed, and went out. I have worked very, very hard and sometimes it is awful lonely on the bike. I haven't run in two weeks because I am very committed to the MTB and it is going well. Do me a favor you tri guys and gals and drop by my "quest for the red plate" thread for the spring series (here on the event subcategory). To put it in perspective, I am trying to cat up to Category 1 in MTB racing, and I am sure a number of you are aware of the category ratings in road biking. My first warm-up race is in Waco on March 15 and the time has come to see if all my hard work has paid off.

Thanks for all of the tips! Less than 48 hours to go. I am in rest mode for all of today and tomorrow. And going stir crazy!

Erika~ Isn't it hard to just sit around and not do active stuff? I'm like that before a race too!!! You get so used to getting out there and moving!
You're going to do great!!!!

I just rode for 22 GLORIOUS miles outside in 60 plus degree weather.

Giggity giggity giggidy!!!!

That is all...

Mike - Patrick got outside to run today. I'm enjoying the Florida weather but am just a little jealous. Want to get the new bike out.

Here I go! Today is the day! OMG, it is EARLY!

See you on the flip side...race report to follow!

I'M BACK!

I will give a full race report later, but I am done, I finished and I feel pretty good!

I ROCKED, and I mean ROCKED the swim! I was second out of the water and the first female out. I took 3 full minutes off my training time, for 16.5 minutes for the half mile.

My transition from the swim to the bike was GREAT. First on the bike. T1 = 1:17!

The ride was solid. I felt good about it. Not sure about my time yet, but pace seemed to be just under 20mph or so. Maybe 18 - 20.

The transition to the run SUCKED because a DUMB A$$ man elbowed me on the way to the start and I landed on my a$$. And I was really pissed. And it really rattled me. My run was, funny enough, my worst leg. I really wanted to run hard and fast, but I was out of breath. My legs had plenty of energy, but I just could not get enough air in. So my pace was a dismal 10:20.

Still, I am pleased overall for my first tri!

Oh, and by the way, I WON MY WAVE. First place for women in my wave! :lmao: For overall age group results, I have to wait a few hours and call in.

Pics and full race report coming, but THANKS for the support!

WAY TO GO ERIKA!!!!
:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

(You rocked the swimming!!!)

Ok, time for the full race report complete with pictures!

I was nervous about waking up on time, what with the time change and all. We have those Smart Clocks that are supposed to just automatically change, so that made me nervous and I ended up waking up early. It was ok. Just got up, got dressed, made tea and double checked my bag to make sure everything was in place and ready to go. Had some water and oatmeal for breakfast and was on my way. It was still dark outside. WHY am I doing this? Insane.

Got there and the parking lots was CROWDED, which surprised me since there are so many waves and thus lots of start times and I was one of the earliest. Went in, got my t-shirt (wicked ugly. BOO!) and got marked. Now, this should have been easy, but this event was really poorly organized. I went over and gave them my name, and the woman said, “I already have you checked in. You should be number 271 (wave 2, lane 7, swimmer 1 in that lane), but I already wrote 271 on someone else. Hmmm. Ok. Well, I shouldn’t care, really, but if she is really super slow, then I don’t want her times being posted to my name! She went and tracked the other woman down, re-marked her, and gave me the right number, etc.

Off to the locker room. It was a ZOO in there. Since the swim was indoors, the transition area was indoors. And people had their transition spots set up EVERYWHERE. Some in the pool area, some in the locker room, some in the hallway, etc.

005.jpg

I found a prime spot in the locker room and snagged it. Got everything all organized and laid out. Now I just had to wait for my wave time.

002.jpg

I went into the pool area to check things out and see how the first wave was doing. Yikes! These people are scary. Like 5% body fat and just ripped. They look like Jillian Michaels. These are not my people. 5 minutes before it is time for my wave to start, one of the race officials calls us over for details, etc. I am nervous, but not horribly so. Everyone in my wave looks like me. Mostly fit, but not super cut and with just a few pounds to lose. No one was super fit like the first wave people.

At one minute before our start time, we get in the water and wait. I go to my goggles on, and the strap pulls my bathing cap off. CRAP! I fumble around like crazy and get everything on and in place before the start. Phew.

I am off and swimming and feeling good already! This is a good sign. It has been taking me a while to warm up in the swim. But wonderfully, I hit my stride early and just kept with it. Something that never happened in any of my training swims. But something was wrong. My goggles are digging into the bridge of my nose. It is not horrible, but somewhat uncomfortable. I finally realize that I must have put my goggles on upside down (!) during the fumble to get everything back on before the start.

While swimming, I am keeping my eye on the clock. It seems to be moving quickly. I decided before I even began that I would not count my laps. That is what the volunteers are for. I would just do my swim and get out when they told me I was done. And that happened quickly, yes! I knew I had done well when getting out of the pool, but I was looking around as I was heading to the transition, and everyone else was still in the water. WTH?? OMG, I was SECOND out. Second. And the first one out was male, so I was the first female out of the water.

Transition one. I was breathing HARD after the swim. Really hard. It surprised me. I had all of my stuff well laid out and in an easy to get to spot. I kept a big towel in the pool area and the small towel in the transition area. I dried off with the big towel as I was walking (running not allowed in the transition zone) to my transition spot. Got there, threw my Wish shirt on over my tri suit, socks, and sneakers. Grabbed my iPod and water bottle and was on the bike in no time. (All other gear was with the bike.) In fact, I was the FIRST one on the bike! Total transition time = 1:17!

I can’t comment too much on the bike. It was as expected with no surprised and nothing eventful. And I guess that is a good thing.

Coming off the bike and onto the run was another story. I was off in a flash and jogging over to the run area and this A$$WIPE comes flying past me, elbows me in the ribs, and knocked me flat on my a$$! WT F?!?! It really rattled me. Not to mention cost me some time. T2 = :35

The run. Well, I was tired. Sucking wind, actually. Not sure why. The bike was pretty good recovery, but I was still winded. From the swim? From being knocked on my a$$? Not sure. I started out fairly slow (10:35 pace) and planned to do that just for 2-3 minutes to get into my groove and then get up to race pace. But man, I was breathing hard. So I kept that pace for a while. At about the half way point, I bumped it up to a 10:10 pace. Maintained that for a while and then got a cramp! WTH? I never cramp when I run. Lack of oxygen I am guessing. So I had to downshift again for a couple of minutes. On a positive note, I was able to finish the last half mile pretty well, at a 9:30 pace (which was supposed to be my race pace). Overall time was at a 10:20 pace. Not horrible, but not what I had hoped.

Hit the finishers’ area and was happy to be done. Stretched. Drank water. And after about 20 minutes, the elation sunk in! I completed a TRI! And I made a decent showing, especially considering it was my first one!

003.jpg

Later I found that I won my wave (for women). So I got a bonus medal! Two medals! YES! Sadly, the a$$ who elbowed me into the run won the wave for the men.

Thanks so much to everyone who supported me, gave advice, answered my many questions, and was just all around supportive! I never would have made it to the starting line without you!

After I was done, I got to go support my mom, who did this with me. She turns 70 this year! Is she a rock star or what? I can only hope to be doing tris when I am 70! She rocked her swim as well and was FIRST out of the water. Her wave was 50+, but still, she was by far the oldest and by far the fastest! She is neither a biker nor a runner, though. So she took her time on the bike, and walked the last leg at her 14:30 pace. I am so proud to be her daughter!

Mental Health Day

We all know that our mental-health days are just as important as our workouts, recovery days, and proper fueling. So, Monday's question for the 'Ohana mixer, which starts here on the team thread, is....

If you had an unexpected free day--no work or other obligations--and $20 to spend just on you, what would you do?

So please share those small indulgences that are essential to your mental well-being. Hopefully, we'll get new ideas and find kindred souls.

There are three little rules. Just because.

  1. You have to spend at least part of the $20 on you. No giving it away, no saving it for a rainy day, and no spending the $20 entirely on your beloved partner, cute kidlets, or BFF. You can spend time with these folks, of course, and some of the money. But the focus is on YOU and what you want to do.
  2. You can choose to work out, if you wish, or your mental health day can coincide with a recovery day.
  3. What you do on your mental health day has to reflect your everyday, local life. No "I just happened to be in Paris..." :rotfl2: You can imagine, however, that you have perfect weather.

As usual, full stories that are related to your mental-health day are welcome. Not to mention the odd digression! And you're always welcome to bring drinks, goodies, and profound thoughts on the meaning of life.

Nice read, well done and Congratulations!

Now the wondering starts...whats an outdoor tri like? Oly distance? 1/2 IM....full IM?

you can do it!

Mike

Erika~ Great race report!!! And grr to the guy that elbowed you!!!

Ha! SO true, Mike!

This was a really good way to have a first tri and I would definitely recommend an indoor swim for anyone who is interested to do a tri but a bit unsure of themselves.

I am already signed up for an outdoor tri in August (another sprint distance). I live in Maine, so it is about the only time you can get in the ocean. And even then, you still need a full wetsuit. It is an all women's tri, so I feel really good about it.

And I am toying with the idea of signing up for an olympic distance tri. I have my eye on one in September, and the swim would be in a lake. So just a light wetsuit needed. Tempting and intimidating at the same time.
