I know we have discussed the triathlons based at FW. I thought I would share some photos from Sunday May 27th. I didn't get many of the athletes, but thought it was interesting to see some of the ways FW is changed for this event.

These buses were used to shuttle from the MK parking lot which had a large section set aside for the event.

Golf carts were not allowed in the Settlement during the event, so several sites at the end of 700 were set aside for cart parking.

As I arrived at about 8:30 only a very few athletes had yet to leave on their bikes.

With all the folks here, extra provisions were made for some breakfast.

Of course there are no boats during the swimming. All buses were marked "Fort Wilderness", and did not run normal routes during this time. I think it was much as it is late at night when drivers ask you where you are going and kind of make up their own routes to move everyone around.

The swimming course started to the East of the Marina.

Swimmers came in on the West end of the beach. By this time 3 swimmers were left in the water.

Beach was very busy.

The Backyard BBQ and surrounding area were full of tents and booths offering all sorts of support services.

I have never attended the BBQ but found the serving lines, and the picnic tables displaced by the event.

As soon as the last swimmer made his way through, the carpet was rolled by some of the many volunteers.

Soon the pack leaders would return and take off running from here on the last leg.

By 9:00 the lead support vehicle was back, and the first of the riders were back, only minutes after the last of the bunch had begun.

We heard many cheers coming from the crowds as they welcomed the cyclist back into the Fort. At 11:00 as we pulled out to go home, they were still coming in. I have to admire these folks.

Thanks for the info and the pictures. Do you know how long this triathlon was, distance-wise, for each leg?

While I realize that WDW has these special events, I dont think I would have been happy if I was staying at FW that day.

We were there on Sunday. In 361 and 359. I can tell you this. Disney did not make it very clear on the Triathlon activities and they made it seem we would be trapped in the loops without being able to leave until it was over. Although it was not the case we were not made aware of any of these activities until after we checked in.

While I support these people as in I could not do it. I do think that they kind of took over the Fort to much and it impacted to many fort regulars vacations. It made our Sunday plans all messed up and we had to sacrifice some time in the parks due to it. We where there for a Girl Scout camping trip and everything went well. But it also took a lot away from the beauty of the facilities. And it was a little unnerving when the guys on the bikes where whipping around the fort at full speed with little regard to the normal speed of people.

Oh well it is just another thing we have to try and avoid.

<Rant off>

Thanks for the very informative link!! I have been around property and seen the athletes, but never appreciated the full scope!!

I did the Danskin Tri the week before this one (also at FW) and it is much smaller in scope. It was a 1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike ride and 5K run. I don't think I could do the bigger one. What makes me smile about the one last weekend is that it's a "half" Ironman and it's a qualifier for a "full" Ironman. These people were trying to qualify for the privilege of doing the full Ironman, which is double the distances I listed above. I told my DH, "It doesn't seem like much reward, does it? You win and you've qualified to endure twice as much pain." :rotfl2:

Disneefun - When I heard about the Danskin Tri you did, and the fact that there is another one of the same distance coming up during our next trip to FW in September, I decided it was time to try a triathlon for the first time. Would you mind if I PM'd or emailed you? I'd love to pick your brain about the race you did.

Thanks!

Leslie

PM away. I'll try to answer what I can. I assume you're looking at doing the Trek and not the Athletes for a Cure (that one's longer).
