Trial Run for Dogs in Resort Rooms

I don't know a thing about fleas. Is that something I can get/bring home without even owning a dog?

Yes, absolutely. You can carry fleas home on your clothes, or in the luggage. I worked at a place with clients that had flea infestations in their homes, the fleas would ride to the office on them, jump on me and I'd carry them home, and I had no pets at the time. It's best to do the bed bug protocol on your stuff when you get home (high heat kills fleas too); so throwing everything in the dryer on high heat for about an hour and I'd treat the luggage too.

What's the best way to complain about this decision (to Disney, not disboard people)? I can't change my plans at this points, but I'm absolutely not on board with (1) staying in a room that just had a dog in it (which I'll concede is unlikely since we'll be at Disney in 2 weeks) or (2) staying in a room with dogs barking nearby. I'm all for meeting people's favorite pets at Disney when I'm walking around, but not when I'm trying to sleep.

Can only imagine the scenarios that Guest Services and Legal might have to deal with, regardless of whether insurance is purchased or waivers are signed upon room reservation (hopefully none of these happen, but still)....

1. Dog bites housekeepers when they enter the room
2. Dog bites other dog
3. Dog bites other human
4. Dog escapes when housekeeping enters, then bites other dog or human
5. Dog escapes and then gets into an accident
6. Someone slips on dog poop that wasn't cleaned up and hurts themselves
etc etc etc...

Don't forget about the first lawsuit filed when someone dies of anaphylactic shock from a dog dander reaction.

Most hotels that allow dogs have separate rooms that they allow dogs in, like they used to have smoking or non smoking rooms. It would be unlikely you’d get a room that just had a dog in it.

I like animals just about as much as I like other people's kids...

We are checking into Wilderness lodge next week. Will take a mental note of any animals on the plane/DME.

Hopefully guests changing and cancelling rooms due to this will let them know and also suggest a trial at the cabins first would have been a great idea. Also what are guests suppose to do with the dog while they wait for a room. No more checking in and leaving for a park while your room gets ready. You just wait and see there will be someone to leave theirs in a hot car while they go to the pool while waiting on a room.

It would be about the same. If the sheets/spreads are white you can usually spot fleas, esp if you shine a bright light in one spot for awhile. They usually are jumping around.

Only if its a service animal...which I know is a whole can of worms if people abuse the system. For my dog would it save me a bunch of money YES....but in the long run I don't need to be anymore on a schedule to make sure I get back, let the dog out.....

Thats my concern. I will feel so guilty at parks all day and not knowing what going on with my dog back in the room. No way will I ever bring my dog to Disney, Its already a complicated trip as is.

I'm neutral to this. I'm a dog person so I wouldn't mind seeing more pups on my vacation but I can also understand why it would upset others.

I do think people are overreacting a bit though. The Universal resorts are dog friendly and I have stayed there 4 different times (most recently about a year ago) and don't recall seeing a single dog on any of my trips. I don't think this is going to be a very used option.

Not necessarily. If the non smoking rooms were overbooked, they put non smokers in smoking rooms. They did that to me before and when I tried to be moved due to allergies it was “Sorry, nothing else available.” Fortunately my allergy wasn’t life threatening, but I had to leave the patio door open any time I was in the room or I would start wheezing. It was a rough week. So I fully believe there will be non pet people placed in pet rooms for at least a night, and for some people, that could be one night too many. It’s just safer to not book that resort at all if you have serious concerns.

Most bedbug companies have dogs that come in and sniff out bedbugs, though I guess a dog sniffing for fleas would be more than a little odd

I'm an A-1 super duper dog fan....but not at my resort. I don't want to hear Skippy in the next room yapping at midnight, or at 5 am (yes, I know..the infant comparison). I also don't want to be in a resort room in which previously there was a dog.

Next up....fleas in the rooms.

I don't think it's a good idea, but I'm sure that some of you will.

What do you think?

Hi Lisann. I haven’t read entire thread but I voted yes, with certain conditions.

*Must be responsible and come back to room at least 3-4 times to walk dog. Not leave dog alone all day and night.
*No housekeeping. It’s unreasonsble to ask housekeeping to enter a room with a dog inside. They may be afraid of dogs, dog could escape, allergic or other issues. They could leave supplies on door knob outside.
*Must show proof of vaccinations.
*Dogs must be on leash.
*Sign an agreement that if there are complaints of barking they must then board dog.
*Resort must have dog only rooms just like hotels used to have smoking rooms.

Yes, there is the screaming child as well which I would equally dislike keeping me awake! We won’t discuss the neighbours from Hell I had one trip. I was so glad it was my last night when they moved in. Truly awful, and I’d take a barking dog any day over them.

I have no problem with dogs at resort, as long as they are well mannered. Actually that could apply to humans too

Horrible idea. Wait until a dog bites someone else's kid. I could see it now, a dog is in an elevator, a kid reaches over and starts playing with it and boom! Makes sense at Fort Wilderness, but not others.

I LOVE dogs, just love them. I have my pup's actual paw print cast as a gold pendant for my necklace. I am totally against this idea. There are SO MANY risks! Dogs biting other dogs, dogs biting guests, destruction of property, incessant barking, owners that do not keep clean after their pet....just too too much to even name! Why would I want to risk possibly taking home fleas or something else to my dog back home?! It is just a bridge too far for me.

Yep to that. I also agree with previous posters that it's a way to make more revenue for Disney. As someone who is allergic to pet dander and have kids who are very afraid of dogs, I think it's a lousy idea.

Not so fast. I cringed at the idea of allowing dogs at resorts (even harder than I cringed at your terrible, overreaching puns) but I'd never even think about taking legal action unless I were attacked by a dog. Even then, my action would be against the owner, not WDW.

As a Muppet fan, I find it hard to believe you don't like terrible, overreaching puns.

But if I'm going to have to put my "serious" hat on for this thread, yes - there's a kernel of truth in my comments. Disney likely would (will??) be sued for dog-related resort incidents based on their policy to allow them on property. Any plaintiff's attorney worth their retainer is going to consider it - whether as a deep pocket, for publicity, or just to cover all the bases. This thread already has talked about liability for things like dog bites, attacks, destruction of property, slip and falls, severe allergic reactions, etc. Which is why I'm positive Disney will have a beautifully drafted form for anyone bringing their dog to sign that has all sorts of bells and whistles like waivers, releases, indemnification, and the like.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of this policy myself. I think there's a reason (as evidenced by the negative reaction on this board) that this was announced at the last minute before implementation - and it's not a good reason. For those that feel most strongly, voting with your wallet is one of the most effective strategies.
