If it is a box that is enclosed, it does sound like it could be a bat box. If it is more open. maybe a nesting are for osprey, owls or other large birds.

Naw...you just stuff them in. They'll fit.

The problem is getting them to stay there -- that's why they put the box way up in a big tree.
