Tree houses and hurricane damage

Dh and I were at Port Orleans in December, and had a great time. We drove over to SSR and saw overturned trees leaning into the old tree houses. Why do they no longer use them , and how long before the mess is cleaned up ? Does anyone know? Thanks!!!

There have been many threads about the tree houses. I stayed in one in the late seventies when I was in High School. We got a good look at them in October riding a boat from OKW to DTD. They are a real mess from the hurricanes and years of neglect. Some folks have heard rumors that they will be fixed up and used again (maybe by DVC?) Others have said that they can never be used again as they can not be made wheelchair friendly. Others have heard that they can not tear them down and use the land for other purposes as they are on wetlands or something. You could do a search, but I think at this point it is all rumors. I would love to be able to take my kids and stay in one again, they are really secluded and private. It would take quite a lot to get them back in shape from what we saw!

There were also a lot of trees fallen onto the Fairway Villas. I assume that they were not cleaned up, since the Fairways Villas will probably be demolished anyway for a future phase off SSR.

When we were at Disney in March we asked about the Tree Houses.
We have stayed there several times before and have always loved them.

We were told that they now house the college students that come to work for Disney as part of their college curriculum.

It wouldn't be the regular college program workers since they have 2 apt. complexes for them but the advanced interns.

nothing is over in the Treehouses now - it was used for storage - I don't think WDW has made up its mind.

If the SSR sales continue at their pace - then yes I can see being part of SSR sometime in the future - the treehouses would be torn down - but to do this WDW has to give up some other land to the wetlands.

I don't think a decision has been made - it all depends upon how fast SSR sales out.

depends upon what is the best interest of WDW - but will the Treehouses be fixed up - my opinion 'NO'. Torn down and replace a big Maybe.

Here is the scoop....

Some of the treehouses were used for interns for stay after they closed them up. Now, two or three are being used but that is it. Apparently they are so infested with termites that they decided they were going to remodel them before the hurricane. However, since then...with the hurricane damage and the costs of repairs and remodels, they have decided to do nothing with them. They are going to tear them down after the second phase of SSR is complete and build another phase in that area. The treehouses are a thing of the past and for those of us who had the pleasure of enjoying them a few times, we were lucky. The treehouses are no more.

My husband and I are joing the DVC and they were telling us this while we toured SSR and told us about the building they were doing.
