Treat. Yo. Self. - A Feb. 2015 Solo/B-day PTR

It has been a while since I last set foot in the magical haven that is WDW. Add to that the stress that comes with a new job promotion at a major retail company and you can begin to see how the idea of a trip began to blossom in my mind.

Then all of a sudden a voice came to me! It said, "Becky, you need to. . .

giphy.gif

Okay, Donna if you insist! So from February 23-28 I will be giving myself an early birthday present in the form of a solo trip.

So come along to see how my "interesting" planning has unfolded thus far and buckle up to see what I decide next. It'll be swell! ;)

"Say how do you do and shake hands, shake hands shake hands."

Well, let's get this introduction started, shall we?

Hello, I'm Becky! I hail from eastern PA where I work part time at a major retail store. I will also soon be starting my journey as a substitute teacher.

This is from my family's first trip together back in January 2012. The Beast was amazing that day. Oh, and look we match! :thumbsup2

As I mentioned in my first post, I will be traveling by myself for a Solo/Birthday soiree. (I'M SO EXCITED!!!) My trip will be from February 23-28 where I will be staying here:

Yay!

:welcome:

Thanks for following along! I'm glad I could make you laugh. Donna is one of the amazing and hilarious characters from Parks and Recreation. It is definitely one of my favorite TV shows.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Well that's different.

When people begin to plan trips there are usually two questions that cross the mind first. You know the ones.

What's the budget? When should/can I go?

Well, that's how I began as well. (Sort of) I began thinking about a possible trip back in the beginning of September. Usually this happens a few times in year but nothing ever comes from it. It's just me being curious but, this time. . .

giphy.gif

Yes, yes it does!

This time I realized that I could actually make a trip work!

I began crunching trip numbers and comparing them to paycheck numbers. Wow, this could really, really work! Then I was wondering if I would have enough to take my sister with me but, sadly I only had the funds for a solo trip.

With all of the excitement building up, I just had to tell someone about my idea. My sister was in full support and excited, Dad was supportive but without the exuberance of my sister, and then there came Mom.

For the record, my whole family is in love with Disney and Mom even did most of the reservation making and such for our 2012 trip.

But she started off by saying how she would never do a solo trip because she would never have any fun and would constantly be lonely. Mind you, I had already read a ton of posts here on the Dis about solo trips and knew what I was getting in to and I was excited. So, her comment kind of put a damper on things.

I told myself to not give up yet; just wait and see what your next paycheck looks like. Fast forward two weeks and the trip was back on. Plus, Mom had been telling me about some of the things she had seen on the Disney website. Wait, what?! You mean you've been doing research?!

giphy.gif

I asked my mom if I should pull the trigger and make down payment. Her answer? No.

She starts going on and on about this and that. "What about you student loans?" "If you do this you'll never be able to move out." So on and so forth.

I couldn't agree more Stitch. I admit she did make some valid points but, I felt totally blind sided by it all.

So for the next few weeks, I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do. Slowly, the excitement came back and even though I didn't tell anyone, my planning began again. Then I made a reservation! :yay:

Not for a room though. :rolleyes1 At this point, I was in the 180 Day window for my potential trip which (as we all know) means I could make and ADR.

But where did I want to go? Well, I couldn't wait to long or else it could be totally booked. It would give me a chance to see several somethings that have changed since I was last there. Oh and I would be in the presence of royalty but, I wouldn't be in a royal house.

Can you guess which restaurant I'm talking about?

The princesses had gotten new dresses since I had last seen them. So, I figured this would be the best way to see them with out having to wait in a line. I know I'll definitely get to see Belle and I am soo hoping that Ariel will be visiting that day as well. If not, I will only get to see her in her fin.

One dining reservation has been taken care of but I still have no place to stay.

Up next: That's the best news yet!

I see you!

Yes, you! The one lurking in my thread. why don't you take a cue from those wonderful grim grinning ghosts: materialize, vocalize and socialize. ;):rotfl2:

Anywho, I got my Incredible first piece of Mickey mail on Saturday. (Ha, see what I did there?) It made this trip even more real! I'll be telling that story tomorrow in my next installment.

I'm also slowly working on my plans for my trip. I'm afraid if I figure things out too soon, then I won't have anything to do to kill time before my trip. Part of me feels like my trip is a million months away and yet it also feels like it'll be here before I know it.

Yoohoo! :wave2:

Hi, fellow solo traveler! Great PTR so far, your writing and gifs are hilaaaaarious! :thumbsup2

Definitely following! I just did my first solo trip a little over a month ago, at the end of September, and it was UH-MAY-ZING! You're going to have suuuuch an amazing time, girl! ::yes::

I am soo glad that you are enjoying my PTR so far!

I really am! Just now when it popped up at the top of my Subscribed threads list, I even had to read it out loud, "Treat. Yo. Self!" and giggle. :rotfl:

Honestly, I found that I liked being there solo BETTER than being there with other people. :lmao: My trip for my birthday next year was supposed to be solo. But some family members (who never really had any interest in Disney World) got so excited as they were watching my massive amount of photos and updates that I was posting on Facebook the entire week of my solo trip, that they decided to tag along with me on the next one!

That's the best news yet!

So when I last left you, Mom had thrown a huge wrench into my plans and I had began to doubt whether this trip was a good idea or not. Just in case though, I made a breakfast ADR at Akershus for 2/25.

Well as the weeks went by I kept going back on forth on what I was going to do.

Screw it! I'm going!

Wait, maybe I shouldn't.

No, when is the next time you'll be able to do this.

I was slowly driving myself insane. This was me at the moment:

giphy.gif

Then one day upon checking my email, I see that Disney is doing room only discounts as well as Stay, Play, and Dine.

So I re-crunched some numbers and had about five different scenarios going on a spread sheet. Add to that the dozen or so internet tabs I had open and I have to wonder how my brain didn't melt.

Finally, I came to the realization that the trip was indeed possible and I wouldn't be breaking the bank. I still hadn't pulled the trigger yet though. I wanted to wait until my next paycheck hit my account.

So about another week went by until my paycheck got to me. When I went to go double check my numbers one last time, I realized that the per night room costs had gone up. What?! Reallly?! I felt like I couldn't wait any longer for fear that the price may go up again. What did I do then?

I booked my room of course! ::yes::

It was official! I was going to Disney!

giphy.gif

Through my job, I have access to benefit center of sorts. One of the perks is that I can a 6-day park hopper ticket for about $30 less than what Disney is asking. Plus I figured I'll be saving more by paying OOP for all of my meals. This is why I booked a room only deal.

Before I booked the room though, I quickly checked for flights again. I wasn't exactly thrilled with the times for departing flights on the 27 so I decided on extra day. Plus this way I can have maximum park time! The departing flight I have my eye on doesn't leave till 4 which means I have till about 12 something on the 28th to spend in a park.

I also took this extra day to cross something off of my Disney Bucket List. After reading trip report after trip report, I heard about this amazing breakfast dish that I now had a chance to try. So, I made another morning ADR for. . .

Tonga Toast here I come!

Congratulations! :cheer2: Doesn't it feel so good to finally have something booked and locked in?! :thumbsup2 One more step towards making it really really real!!

I've never really followed a planning thread for a solo trip before. I can't wait to see what you decide. Very excited!

Parks and Recreation is a really cute and funny show. So, if you like "Treat. Yo. Self." you'll love the rest of the show too!

Woo hoo! You're converting your family. Every now and then, I have teeny doubts in my mind about going solo but then I read solo TRs or other solo threads and all the second guessing just washes away.

It does feel good. I had to go to work that night then and despite the chaos, I was on cloud nine because of finally booking my trip. :cloud9:

I've never done anything solo before, so the only piece of advice I have for you is to make sure you meet Gaston in the New Fantasyland ;)

Oh my gosh! Get out of my head you two! He is totally at the top of my character must meet list!

New Fantasyland is one of the things I am most excited for. Last time I was there it was still very much under construction.

I started desperately waiting to meet Gaston in November 2013.

I got to WDW in July of 2014 and was equally excited.

You've been SO warned.

First of all, let me apologize for not updating lately. You know how life gets in the way sometimes. Anywho, ON WITH THE SHOW!

You can fly, You can fly, You can fly

When I last left you, I had booked my room and a reservation for Kona Cafe. :cool1:

Well about a week ago, I did some last checking on flight times with various airlines. After looking around for about a half hour, it slowly became obvious that flying with Southwest was a no-brainer.

I am flying from Philadelphia to Orlando on two direct flights. My flight out of Philly leaves at 11:15 and I should get to MCO around 2 pm. I figured that by the time I get to my resort my room should hopefully be ready. Fingers crossed.

Now here's where I have run into a dilemma. I actually changed my Kona ADR from 10:15 to 9:15 on Saturday to try and give me a bit more park time. However, I have to be back at ASMU by 1 for my Magic Express back to the airport. If I'm out of my ADR by 10 that would only leave me about two hours in a park do do stuff. So, would it be worth it to buy a 6-Day ticket to use one Saturday or should I just buy a 5-Day? If I go with a 5-day, what should I do on Saturday till I have to leave? :confused3:rolleyes2

I need to order my ticket by the beginning of December so that I have plenty of time before I have to book my FP+. Can you see my problem? Any suggestions would be great!
