We chose poorly. Our line did not move. At all. I couldn’t figure out what was going on.

First, they pulled out the two books he had packed and flipped through them.

Hmmm... I can't quite make the connection. Why might get some scrutiny from security?

Mark came over just as they were swabbing a small box from Ben’s bag.


“What’s in there?”

The TSA smiled, and nodded his head to one of his coworkers to check it out.

This is a joke, right? He didn't really take that on the plane!

No wonder his bag got flagged for screening.

When we were onboard, the pilot, Moose came out to talk to the passengers, introducing himself and his co-pilot Bud and to thank everyone for flying with them.

Moose and Bud... for some reason I'm picturing a single prop plane with pontoons taking off from a dock in the middle of nowhere.

The cabdriver was not happy, but there was a single lady right behind us, so it is not like he lost a fare.

I mean, 4 people and luggage in a car? Really? That would be tight!

Actually... how close is the JW Marriot to a Metro stop? I actually find taking the Metro to and from Reagan to be pretty easy.

We got to the check in desk and there was one person ahead of us. I checked us in and the desk clerk said “Let me see if there is a room ready”

I inherited a horrid sense of direction from my dad. Mark’s is not much better.


But he has a GPS on his phone.


I hate his GPS!

We got there about 10 minutes before our tour was supposed to start, which is when they advised us to arrive.

Perfect timing!

The boys’ favorite part was seeing a sign that said “I just printed up my lifetime in earning in two minutes”

You know, that just seems cruel. Wouldn't it be demoralizing to go to work everyday and see that sign????

The next important thing for us to do was to get something to eat, since we had a rushed breakfast at the airport. We decided to walk back to our hotel (6 blocks) to get something at the Starbucks there.

You're in DC, surely you passed about 5 of them on the way.

We planned to use the Metro a few times on our trip, so we went to a machine to purchase 4 reloadable Smart Cards. We put in our credit card, followed the steps and the transaction errored off. Tried it again. Same thing. Used a different credit card. Still got an error. As we were doing this, a mechanic came by and said “This machine is not working.”


OK. A sign would have helped…

It also would have helped if you weren't trying to get Metro passes from a juice machine.

Then, I notice a warning on the display of my camera:


No memory card.


I must have forgotten to put the card back in the camera after our Yellowstone trip. I didn’t think the camera would let me take pictures without a card in and I am surprised that it took me so long to notice the message.

We always take a deck of cards and dice for Yahtzee on trips to play if we have some downtime. On the class trip, he brought Apples to Apples card. He actually asked me before the trip if he should take his new game and I said yes. Did not occur to me that it was not the best thing to get through security.

The hotel is a couple of blocks from a Metro stop. It probably wouldn't have been too bad to take the subway, but since we weren't really familiar with how it worked, and Mark gets a little flustered in new situations, it was better at that point to take a cab. Which was just a little more than $20 with tip.

Probably, although most of the route we walked was by monuments and federal buildings and not many restaurants. I think we also took the opportunity of being in our hotel to go back to the room to use the bathroom. A couple members of my traveling party avoid public restrooms if they can.

I saw this posted on the internet around the time I was writing my update and thought it fit in. We were so annoyed that there was no Out of Order sign on the machine, and the mechanic's tone implied we should have known.

I actually handled this uncharacteristically well. I haven't forgotten, and I'm still bummed out that I screwed up, but I didn't let it ruin my day.

My dad took loads of photos of me (and everyone else but mostly me lol) on my wedding day and then when he went to wind up the film (yes I'm that long married but then so are you lol) he couldn't get it to work. He brought it to a specialist camera shop where they opened it up in their dark room only to discover he hadn't put a film in the camera. Poor man had to tell my mother who was a little to say the least. Whereas I, being a total daddy's girl, was all

I just remembered! We didn't go back to the hotel for Starbucks. We were going to the food court, but we couldn't find it.

You exit the hotel through a set of double doors and you are in this very plain looking hallway. There are posters up for the food court, but it doesn't say how to get there or the hours. We walked past an elevator to a pair of doors. We tried to open them, but they were locked. Since it was around 10:30, we thought maybe they were closed for breakfast and it was too early for lunch. They had really screwy hours when we went last time- they closed early on weekends because there aren't many people in the city then.

So we doubled back to the Starbucks in the hotel.

Here is the link to the photo post about the shortcut from the Hard Rock to Citywalk through the Hard Rock parking lot. The main thing to remember is parking space #627

From the lobby, go out by the Palm Restaurant. Go down the stairs. Turn left towards the parking lot. Proceed to the back of the parking lot. Find the opening to the path near space #627. Follow the path to City Walk. I timed it. I think it was 5 minutes.

There is also a pleasant walk along the river where the boats run. You can cut the time of that walk by cutting through the pool area

The Big Drool, y’all!


After leaving the zoo, we dragged ourselves the 4 hot, long blocks to where the Metro stop is. But before getting on the subway, lunch!


Before the trip, I had researched some restaurants on Trip Advisor and this one sounded interesting.

HotNJuicyCrawfish Restaurant



It is a Cajun-themed restaurant with a lot of down-and-dirty, peel and eat options. We have never had crawfish before and this sounded like fun.


I asked my friend Missy, who works in DC for the Washington Post if she knows anything about the restaurant and she sent me this review.


At Hot N Juicy, you get crawfish with a side order of sexual innuendo


How could we NOT go there???


We were seated and with parched voices, we ordered drinks:


Lemonade for the boys and iced tea for me, although I switched over to lemonade after the first round.


Here’s are REALLY crappy picture of the menu, and I didn’t get one that showed the market price of things like a pound of snow crab or crawfish.

We decided we would go with Big Drool, with a side order of mozzarella sticks for the 4 of us:

We selected the fried calamari, no seasoning for the appetizer.

This was amazing! Probably the best fried squid we have ever had. Or maybe we thought so because we were at a desperate point of starvation.


We demolished this.


Then our order arrived. It comes in a bag in bucket.

We went with the Garlic-Butter, mild spice.

Holy Guacamole, this stuff was SPICY!!! Actually, we could have used some guacamole. We are not food wimps, but the heat was slightly uncomfortable. We were able to eat most of it, but it got harder and harder with every bite. There was a multi-generational family eating near us (a couple of young kids, parents, and grandparents) and they had also ordered the mild spice. They complained about the heat level. They were told they could get an order of Hawaiian sweet bread to help counter the heat.


Even through the pain, we enjoyed this experience. Surprisingly, Nate who is a fussy eater and can be a little bit prissy, liked it the most.


By the way- we only saw male waiters, no women/girls in skimpy tank tops.


If you are intrigued with what you have read here, you can check out the 4th location of this small, Las Vegas based chain which opened last summer in Orlando.


Once we finished our meal, we got back on the Metro for our return.


Ford’s Theatre, the site of President Lincoln’s assassination and the house across the street where he died the next morning, were a couple of blocks away from our stop. When we visited 5 years ago, the Petersen House was undergoing renovations and the theatre was closed because there was a production running at the time. The only thing open then was the Ford’s Theater museum.


It was around 3:15 when we arrived on 10th Street. Tours run every half hour and include different sets of options for each time- Walk-through of theatre only or One Destiny performance, formal tour with park ranger, the Petersen house and the museum. I went up to the box office and I was informed that the tours were sold out until 4:30.

My family was exhausted from our early wakeup and all our walking up to that point, so they refused to wait the hour.


I was a little disappointed because we didn’t have much play in our schedule so it was unlikely that we would have another chance to include another visit to Ford’s Theater.


We walked back to the hotel.


This is the Old Post Office Building.

The building is currently being renovated, but when it is open, you can go up into the bell tower and you get some pretty nice views, similar to the views from the Washington Monument. You are not quite as high up, but the windows are open to the outside.

We also walked by the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

We returned to our hotel room and took it easy for a bit. We tried to figure out where to get dinner that night. One possibility was the Old Ebbitt Grill which was nearby. We called, but the only opening they had was at 9 pm. We decided to check out the restaurants at the hotel.

We looked over the menu at the 1331 Grille, saw plenty of options and decided to stay.

We are glad we did! The food was fantastic and our waiter Liscombe was attentive and friendly. He smiled every time he came over to our table and told us we made him laugh.



He brought a bread service to our table and after we had finished it, he brought us another.

And what did we order?


Nate got the Tenderloin Steak ($38) with Lobster Mac & Cheese side ($7). No points offered here since steak is a slam-dunk order for Nate. Please note- he is NOT a cheap date!

I ordered the JW Greens-

Mark got the Rock Shrimp Ravioli.


Food Porn FAIL! I don’t know what happened here, but I don’t have a picture.


OMG, this is one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had! The pasta was cooked PERFECTLY. The very definition of al dente. I was glad Mark and decided we would share our meals.


Ben selected the Salmon. Also excellent.

For dessert, we could not pass up the Donuts and Coffee Ice Cream.

This was a spectacular meal! A wonderful ending to an enjoyable arrival day.

And to top off our day, I was going to be meeting with a couple of Disney friends- Missy and Franklin (missyrose) for dinner.

Although it's weird that you only saw male waiters ... that article makes it sound like male waiters are a minority there.

Even without the Ford's Theater tour, it still sounds like a nice day. You got to see some nice stuff, even if you didn't get to do everything you wanted. One of the great things about a place like DC is that you can have a good time without doing much - just walk around and there's always something historical to see.
