I'm visiting LA (I'm from Melbourne, AUS) at the end of the month and I've just got a couple of questions:

- I'm travelling with my boyfriend, and we intend on taking public transport around LA. Just wondering what the public transport system is like (mainly the trains)? In particular: how busy it is, safety, punctuality?

- We're staying at a Bed & Breakfast place near the corner of Nth Sierra Bonita Ave and Hollywood Blvd (I think the area is West Hollywood). What's the best way to get from LAX to this area? We were thinking of just taking a taxi but from reading Hollywood Facts sticky I don't know if that's the best/cheapest/fastest way. Our flight arrives at 6am, but depending on how long it takes to get out of customs I can only estimate we'd be leaving the airport around 7am.

- Any general things about safety in LA? Things to look out for? And areas to stay away from?

I also applied for tickets to the Ellen show, but since I didn't get a reply I'm assuming that I haven't gotten the tickets (probably because I'm from Melbourne so I could only leave an international number). I might try and line up to get "Day Of" tickets. Has anyone lined up for Day Of tickets before? How long did you have to line up for? Did you manage to get tickets? As much as I love Ellen and I really want to see her, the only day I could get tickets was the day I arrive in LA at 6am - I can't imagine myself lining up for 3 hours to only "maybe" get tickets while I'm jetlagged after an 18hr flight.

I am not really that qualified to answer your questions (only lived in California for 4 years in the late 80s and early 90s) but there are indeed a number of places in LA to avoid due to crime. I would do some serious Google action to find out if I were you. I would assume the public transportation is pretty reliable and safe but you might want to look into renting a car, there is a lot of distance between things to do in LA at times and it would be nice to have a rental car. You can get good rates at LAX on one. Have a great trip.

Not able to give any idea on Transport, as i was on vacation.
But my cousins live there, and they decided to use transport from where they lived at Echo Park to Long Beach rather than drive 1 day, and it took them a couple of hours , that would normally be about 30mins max in the car.
They said they would not use it again
